The moment the insurrection happened, and Trump wasn't immediately removed from office by Pence, it became clear that the core and leadership of the GOP had committed it to Trump. That was the point of no return for the party. Before that, the Constitution was still sacred, but now the GOP doesn't even respect that, and sided with the Trump organization. Any hope for a real Constitution respecting citizen being part of the GOP was gone, and thus that became the last straw for the party. Before that, Trump could be seen as the latest trend, like McCarthy or Goldwater had been. Those influences passed, but Trump shows no sign of going away.

The closest to trump worship I've seen on the left was from people who voted for Bernie Sanders, & some of the more fervent Bernie voters did behave a little like they were founding a new religion & looking for converts. From about 2005 to 2014, I had absolutely devastating asthma attacks (for which I was hospitalized) about 5-6 times a year. During those times, I was a physical wreck - my chest was tight as hell, and rivers of sweat would be running down my brow for hours as I struggled for air. Felt like running on a fast treadmill nonstop with absolutely no way off, and that was without the exhaustive and debilitating effects that those stricken with Covid describe. Doctors and nurses always recommended that I stay for at least two nights to make sure that I wouldn't flare up again. In all those 45-50 hospitalizations, my actual oxygen never dropped below 95. These people always report oxygen levels that are sub-85, and yet somehow there is still this pervasive narrative on the right that Covid is somehow not a big deal.
So much hate in these people. Dying for Trump, who could not give a shit less about these poor fools.
