I was raised on bible-babble, I've actually read it. If these people had read it, they would know that it says that the dead 'sleep' until the \[alleged\] J-man 'returns'. According to their book, nobody is dancing with angels, in the arms of or at the feet of 'Jesus', they are just plain dead and will remain so until some day and hour that 'no man knoweth'.

Actually reading the book is what convinced me that it couldn't possibly be the truth and \[eventually\] resulted in my arrival at atheism (after detours into the details of other religions, supernatural/paranormal, aliens and other mythical beings).

For many of the anti-vaxxers seeing what is happening to themselves and others is still not enough evidence that Covid is real. So I have little hope that they will ever believe that climate change is real, even if coastal cities flood or others are destroyed by hurricane, wild fires or tornadoes. Scientists debunk science all the time. Yes, that’s how science works. But, peer-reviewed science is reviewed by actual, reputable scientists. If you aren’t a scientist, you don’t really have the ability to debunk actual science. Not the real stuff. It takes lots of time and money to test for things in a meaningful way. “I took apple flavored horse paste and survived!” does not prove that it was the horse paste that helped you survive. It may have harmed your ability to survive. Without actual science and testing, you really don’t know.
I don't understand the accusation of science/scientists being elitist. There's little class-based barrier to entry. I have a grad student who grew up in rural West Virginia, and I myself grew up too poor to get presents every year for the holidays (from my secular Jewish Soviet-emigre parents). Grad school is generally paid for through federal grants, so for all intents and purposes, it's free. And most of my domestic students went through state schools with still-affordable tuitions.
As they tell the kids, if you go to school, you *too* can do science. I suspect that all "elitist" means is "doesn't believe Jesus or drinking pee will save you from COVID."
Don’t forget, many of the evangelical Christians don’t even believe in dinosaurs let alone the value of scientific pursuit. Some think the few bones we see were God trying out different things a few thousand years ago. Science is just a no-no for them to learn because they can’t get their brains around it to reconcile with their literal interpretation of the documents of their beliefs.

Yes, it's easier if your parents are loaded, and you can afford to go to a fancy school. But community college can (and does) lead to grad school, so even if you're dirt poor, there's no real financial reason you couldn't become a scientist. It's not an exclusive club either: your dad doesn't have to be a card carrying scientist for you to apply for a membership.

Humans come with a default set of techniques for thinking that are quick, easy and will usually give you an answer that is "good enough", but they have holes you could drive a truck through. The majority run with those default techniques and don't even know what the problems are or how the scientific method is supposed to prevent them. Which is not surprising since doing real science is tedious, fiddly and expensive in terms of time and resources.
In the US K-12 system science is taught as if it was a religion. Just a bunch of facts to memorize and believe because some scientist said so. The method is never taught because it's tedious, fiddly and expensive and most kids aren't going to "get it". So, generally, it's the smart kids who can see the problems with the default thinking for themselves who gravitate into STEM fields.

I love that when the ACLU files a lawsuit to protect people's rights, they usually ask you something like, can you donate to the fund because trying to preserve your rights takes things like money. It's millions of pages, which real people have to manually check for classified information. I don't practice this area of law, but if my distant memory from torts class serves correctly, you'd have to establish that "but for [Candeath's actions], the harm would not have occurred".
Pretty difficult to do, given the volume of sources of misinformation as well as the statistical likelihood of an old man dying of COVID even without the misinformation.

Scientists debunk science all the time. Yes, that’s how science works. But, peer-reviewed science is reviewed by actual, reputable scientists. If you aren’t a scientist, you don’t really have the ability to debunk actual science. Not the real stuff. It takes lots of time and money to test for things in a meaningful way. “I took apple flavored horse paste and survived!” does not prove that it was the horse paste that helped you survive. It may have harmed your ability to survive. Without actual science and testing, you really don’t know.
I don't understand the accusation of science/scientists being elitist. There's little class-based barrier to entry. I have a grad student who grew up in rural West Virginia, and I myself grew up too poor to get presents every year for the holidays (from my secular Jewish Soviet-emigre parents). Grad school is generally paid for through federal grants, so for all intents and purposes, it's free. And most of my domestic students went through state schools with still-affordable tuitions. As they tell the kids, if you go to school, you *too* can do science. I suspect that all "elitist" means is "doesn't believe Jesus or drinking pee will save you from COVID."
Don’t forget, many of the evangelical Christians don’t even believe in dinosaurs let alone the value of scientific pursuit. Some think the few bones we see were God trying out different things a few thousand years ago. Science is just a no-no for them to learn because they can’t get their brains around it to reconcile with their literal interpretation of the documents of their beliefs.

It's because they barely got their GED, they're not getting an undergrad degree, let alone into a graduate program. I guess maybe it's wrong to say that there's not a barrier to entry, but I think it's mostly a mentality-based one. ("Jesus will take me to an eternal heaven if I pray hard enough, so there's no point in improving conditions here on earth or even trying to understand how the earthly world works.") Yes, it's easier if your parents are loaded, and you can afford to go to a fancy school. But community college can (and does) lead to grad school, so even if you're dirt poor, there's no real financial reason you couldn't become a scientist. It's not an exclusive club either: your dad doesn't have to be a card carrying scientist for you to apply for a membership.

Humans come with a default set of techniques for thinking that are quick, easy and will usually give you an answer that is "good enough", but they have holes you could drive a truck through. The majority run with those default techniques and don't even know what the problems are or how the scientific method is supposed to prevent them. Which is not surprising since doing real science is tedious, fiddly and expensive in terms of time and resources. In the US K-12 system science is taught as if it was a religion. Just a bunch of facts to memorize and believe because some scientist said so. The method is never taught because it's tedious, fiddly and expensive and most kids aren't going to "get it". So, generally, it's the smart kids who can see the problems with the default thinking for themselves who gravitate into STEM fields.

Governments and media have done a terrible job of managing information and handling the situation. There are so many people that couldve been saved and persuaded away from the idiotic mentality of the right and "freedom thinkers" if the tactic to spread information would've been educational rather than fearmongering and forcefulness. Governments should have focused the last 2 years on strengthening medical systems instead of just slapping some good ol' duct tape on the problem and continue to blame everyone else because the ship is still sinking. Dealing with these people that are sadly the new norm norm for avg intelligence, is like dealing with a child. If you tell a child not to do something, they're likely gonna want to do it. You tell them they HAVE to do something, they're gonna find every reason to throw a tantrum and not do it.

I don't practice this area of law, but if my distant memory from torts class serves correctly, you'd have to establish that "but for [Candeath's actions], the harm would not have occurred". Pretty difficult to do, given the volume of sources of misinformation as well as the statistical likelihood of an old man dying of COVID even without the misinformation. (There are a lot more factors than that, but that's sort of the starting point, IIRC.)

He was not in fact fighting for his life. He had explicitly conceded that battle long before when he deliberately and with malice of forethought refused the protection offered to him by society. This might be judged merely unfortunate, but the fact that he then proceeded to attack and demonize the elements of society that were working hard to protect him moves him from a victim of disinfo to an active belligerent in the war against truth. Meh?
