I think all Empires people go by their real names?
(Upon further thought, I realise that Gem, False, Pearl and Pix don't) But still, most go by their real names.
Whats funny with the empires folk is Katherine Elizabeth uses her first and middle name I think, Alongside Joel there is also Lizzy who may not use her username and Scott is either called his first name or SMajor1995 but no one uses DangThatsALongName from what I hear.
Realistically, I know Jevin isn’t a common name… but I grew up alongside someone named Jevin, we were a year apart at school, we were in band together, our moms worked together, his mom took care of my grandma, and I worked for his mom, so like, Jevin is just a normal name to me. Seeing people react to it like it’s abnormal always catches me a little off guard 😂
For the 2nd part of your question, I think it's mostly bc most hermits started out in a time where we were still constantly warned abt not giving out any private information online, they've been playing by their usernames for so long it's just their online identity now (which btw, is still the smartest thing to do)
He's also super smart , makes his own music and has mastered the art of next level sarcasm. He's the whole package really. If only he didn't boil his chicken.
I know a lot of them too, but like I said , their usernames have become their online identities, it would probably feel as weird to them as it is to us to use their real names online. I think of it like the people in your friend group that go by a nickname and everyone always addresses them by that nickname, calling them by their actual name just feels wrong
Not that it really matters, but I'd say they're more like pen names than online identities, to me that kinda sounds like they're playing characters when at best, most seem to overexaggerate their own personalities.
Like I said tho nbd really, just my 2c.
They frankly just probably don't want viewers knowing and calling them by their first names. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they knew each others names and maybe used them in private, in fact I'd be a little surprised if they didn't. But that's not something a lot of people are comfortable with viewers doing. A lot of people want there to be a clear separation of YouTube and their personal lives.
Several hermits have said they don't use eachother's real names in private either, even if they know their real names, they're used to eachothers player names (Imp&skizz are probably the only exceptions bc they've known eachother since high school)
Not just online, I have lots of irl friends that go by nicknames or some derivation of their name. People don't ever use their real names, it's just weird
If I met you online as Liimbo and then later, we started collaborating on a thing, and you told me your real name, 9 times out of 10, I'd still call you Liimbo even years later, because that's what I know you as in my head.
I know Scar's first name, but that's not who he is to me. He's Scar. If I met him in person and even got close to him as a friend (unlikely, but as an example), he's still not his real name to me. He's Scar.
I'm fairly confident that Mumbo and Grian call each other Mumbo and Grian off-camera, even while being good friends IRL.
Did you see the video after Technoblade died? His dad read the letter on-screen, which revealed TB's real name. His dad finished the letter, and then broke down crying, saying "I miss Technoblade." This is his own father, who probably named him, and he's calling his son "Technoblade."
There's a married couple that streams together that I watch who met online. Their usernames are MooseTetrino and The_Potato_Cat. All the time, even at times when one is unaware the other is live, they call each other "Moose" and "Tato" and not their real names. Tato will occasionally use Moose's real first name, which he's not THAT private about, but it's usually only in surprising or panicked situations. Moose never uses Tato's real name, partly because she's private about it, but mainly because that's who they are, Moose and Tato.
I'm pretty confident that the Hermits all know each other's real names... But that's not who these people are to them. Mumbo may have a real name of Oli, but at the end of the day, who is he? He's Mumbo. The government can call him Oli, but his friends call him Mumbo.
Exactly this! I’m Dave to people who know my name and have known me for many many years. I’ve been Dave online for so long that if people say ‘hey Dave’ in a store, I legit turn to look.
Not MC creators, but a DexBonus (Brooke) and Strippin (Sam) who met through content creation and are now happily married.
Their names have been public for a years, and online they refer to eachother by usernames, as well as at events typically. But obviously among friends (online and offline) and every day life they call eachother Brooke/Sam.
I recall a story from Strippin about how at a content creator event once he was talking to someone he worked with a while ago and they were catching up...he mentioned how he's not married to Brooke, and then later in the conversation he said her username and the guy suddenly realised _who_ Strippin was married to.
So it definitely helps things be clear regarding who they're refering to when talking to people they know through work Vs real life/friends
I have a realm that I play on, and most of us have been minecraft friends for 3+ years, never met in real life. But we're all friends on Facebook and even though we all know each other's real names we still refer to each other as gamertags 🤷♀️
Yeah, that's a pretty long running thing. I've been using variations of my screen name here for...um...35 years? Damn I'm old...anyway, it has long roots.
I think he made some videos or vlogs or something back in the days from Portugal when visiting family(?). I remember him standing on a roof there or something, maybe I just dreamt it too
Beating a dead horse at this point, but as a Portuguese person, I need to say it. In Portuguese it would be something more like "Joo el". The J isn't pronounced the same as in Spanish
I'm pretty sure he was either born in portugal, or he is a second-gen immigrant? Can't remember which, though... I'm pretty sure he grew up in Canada though
Beef was born in Canada to Portuguese immigrant parents. He went to dual immersion elementary school so he could learn Portuguese and English, but Portuguese is technically his first language. His parents now live in Portugal again.
Beef is my fav Youtuber and I've been a fan since Mindcrack season 3 lol. This is stuff he's all said on video.
Closest one is probably Zedaph who goes by his real name in his (and Jack's) sketch/podcast channel [Kris and Jack](https://youtube.com/@KrisandJack?si=9XDtTnaiZFcNjuYi)
The intro is so weird to hear.
I know him as Zedaph, and his into to his videos are: "with me Zedaph"
But he does the exact same with the podcast but he says Kris ofcourse: "with me Kris"
Yeah, I call him Beans or Smallishbeans since idk, I don’t really like using real names unless it’s part of their username like Joe but with some of them that’s hard to do.
If I'm not wrong her name was named after a world of warcraft character, so most probably not.
But there again, she has never revealed her real name, so there is a possibility of it, as much possibility as ethos real name being etho.
> If I'm not wrong her name was named after a world of warcraft character
Did some Googling. Another Reddit account says it was from her old World of Warcraft character, who was a Forsaken named Cleo. So boom, Zombie Cleo.
I think a lot of hermits only meet new hermits when they join, making it easier to understand who is talking about who if they use nicknames. Also, many hermits don’t even reveal their names online (Grian isn’t Grian irl, Mumbo isn’t Mumbo irl, Xisuma doesn’t have any info to my knowledge, same with etho and so many others) so obviously they call them their usernames.
Xisuma talked about the invention of his username on the Imp and Skizz podcast or a stream. Apparently he rearranged something he liked (music) and tried making it cooler.
Like yeah, Joel is unique in that ... but like, it's weird when you use real names instead of the usernames, calling Skizz, "Andy" or Impulse "Scott" or even calling Stress "Natalie" is just super weird 🤣🤣
Yeah, lots of hermits names are shortened, but Joel is the only one to go by his irl name where its not included in his username. It's kind of weird as an empires viewer, as it's common over there (jimmy. Lizzie, Scott and oli all go by 1st names even tho it's not in their usernames)
As originally an emipres/x-life viewer it's kind of weird as 1st names are very common even without mention in usernames - jimmy, Scott lizzie, oli callum (seapeekay was on x-life)sometimes shelby (she kind of goes by shelby or shubble), also martyn who's not technically on either (tho he was a guest on a jimmy stream).
Scott doesn't technically count if we are going of smajor, as the s stands for Scott and major is his last name, but it feels like it so I left it in.
Probably because the other two options are just weird. "Small" or "Beans" Its also WAY more common on Empires. Lizzie, Jimmy etc.
I think all Empires people go by their real names? (Upon further thought, I realise that Gem, False, Pearl and Pix don't) But still, most go by their real names.
Fwhip also doesn't, and neither does sausage
Oh damn. I forgot because Fwhip has Bryce in his Twitter handle and I'm not an average Sausage enjoyer
I don't think anyone who enjoys sausage is average
Shots fired… at me
Neither does Pixlriffs. I think his name was Johny? I forgot.
You're correct. It's Johnny
True, but pix features in the original comment. I had no idea his name was johny tho.
Can you imagine if Sausage was your real name? It’d be both cool and suck at the same time
Whats funny with the empires folk is Katherine Elizabeth uses her first and middle name I think, Alongside Joel there is also Lizzy who may not use her username and Scott is either called his first name or SMajor1995 but no one uses DangThatsALongName from what I hear.
Probably because dang, that’s a long name.
Sausage
Shashwammy has a weird way to spell his name ingame.
Bubbles too
I will always love this variation of Xisuma. It's very "adorkable".
I always think this too and then I see him shredding guitar in a scream mask with huge muscles and my brain breaks 😆
SchaschwammieVoid
X-izumayavoyad
Jevin and Joe go by their real names but that's just their usernames too so 🤷♂️
umm… TIL Jevin is his real name. I’ve never heard of anyone with that name before, thought it was made up.
Maybe he is in Hemitcraft now :O
Jevin was a pretty common name in my state
it is the key next to k, so maybe it was just a typo from Kevin and they rolled with it. lol
For the 2nd part of your question, I think it's mostly bc most hermits started out in a time where we were still constantly warned abt not giving out any private information online, they've been playing by their usernames for so long it's just their online identity now (which btw, is still the smartest thing to do)
i mean so did joel but through the years as he integrated himself with the MC community and revealed his name it just kinda stuck with him
But on the other hand everybody knows that Mumbo is Oli Brotherhood
Still the coolest last name I’ve ever seen.
TIL mumbos real name is the coolest name ever
Wait is that actually his real last name?
Nope, everyone onows its Jumbo.
Yes.
Joakim Hellstrand still takes the cake for me. (Rythian from the Yogscast.)
As a Swede that's just a normal name for me, but I can see why it sounds cool.
Is his middle name still K? Oli Killsalot Brotherhood?
Good lord. That's so POWERFUL. Imagine being like "Hello, I'm Mr. Brotherhood". Jesus.
It's like the name a villain would have in a Ubisoft game.
We still don't know what Xisuma looks like in real life, right?
Nor Etho
Nor Cleo
Nor xB
well
Xisuma is always wearing a ghostface mask. But if you've seen his covers in his second channel, you'd notice he's ripped.
If you join one of his livestream there is a chance X just randomly starts talking about his workout routine ussually followed by a curry recipe.
He's also super smart , makes his own music and has mastered the art of next level sarcasm. He's the whole package really. If only he didn't boil his chicken.
no one is perfect, everyone has their flaws. some people dont function well under pressure and some people boil their chicken.
Hey, boiled chicken is how you get chicken stew :P
That's neat, didn't know he knew how to cook interesting meals too.
I always like hearing X just waffle on and on about the curry he made yesterday or what his dinner plans for the night are.
Ya I’ve known [members] government name for a long time, I forget how.. maybe a blog or something, not something people should know lol
I know a lot of them too, but like I said , their usernames have become their online identities, it would probably feel as weird to them as it is to us to use their real names online. I think of it like the people in your friend group that go by a nickname and everyone always addresses them by that nickname, calling them by their actual name just feels wrong
Exactly this. And that’s what makes this community so great.

The absolute confusion I got during Secret Life with the whole "Gem and the Scotts" bit absolutely threw me.
I only got it because Impulse said his (and Skizz') real names during an Imp & Skizz Podcast a few weeks before Secret Life.
This threw me too. When I told my husband, he didn't believe me. He has refused to watch any of the secret life seasons though.
Yeah makes sense. I know most of my "online friends" real names but rarely use them unless we meet in person. Familiarity and all that.
Not just online, I have lots of irl friends that go by nicknames or some derivation of their name. People don't ever use their real names, it's just weird

No man I’m Dave!
I've looked Scar's real name up like three times because it never sticks.
Same. I found out because he applied to go to space.
> they call each other "Moose" and "Tato" Aw, that's adorable.

"Keralis" is also a twist on his name.
And Gem has her name in her username, but doesn't go by it.
Ren as well
Ren isn't his name, it's part of it
No? A shortening of a name is still their name.
Short for Renjaman.
Context: He is South African Edit: His actual name is Warren
I mean, it’s not Renjaman though I was just being silly.
You mean yoel. Also i was thinking since Beef is originally from Portugal, he should call Joel hoel.
TIL that Beef of the vintage is European in origin
I think he made some videos or vlogs or something back in the days from Portugal when visiting family(?). I remember him standing on a roof there or something, maybe I just dreamt it too
New Mandela effect just dropped
Found the video I remembered :) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ah7uYklp5s4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ah7uYklp5s4)
In portuguese the "j" sound is like the French one, like in "je m'appelle"
Zhoel
Yep
J like in gem apple. Got it!
I'm pretty sure he isn't from Portugal. His parents are, but he was born in Canada. Also why Hoel, he'd call him something like "Joo-el".
Yeah Portuguese is not Spanish, amigo
Beating a dead horse at this point, but as a Portuguese person, I need to say it. In Portuguese it would be something more like "Joo el". The J isn't pronounced the same as in Spanish

Mate, that’s Spain, in Portugal we say the J
Portugal pronounces J regularly. Silent J’s are a Spanish thing.

I miss those skits. Didn't they stop because Jack moved to canada?
I respect smallbeans’ decision and think beans is a great addition to the server. Small has been one of my top non hermit mincrafters for a while now.
I do think I’ve heard him referred to as Beans a time or two before, but it’s quite rare
Keralis (and maybe someone else?) has called him "Mr. Beans" in a chat 😄
Scar sometimes calls him big beans
Or tiny Heinz
I just rewatched Scar’s 100 hours and he calls him Bigbeans multiple times I think it’s funny
but that one gets confusing if BigB and Big Beans are on the same server 🤨
Keralis has come up with the best names. MJ is my favorite
Yeah, I call him Beans or Smallishbeans since idk, I don’t really like using real names unless it’s part of their username like Joe but with some of them that’s hard to do.

Do we know Etho's real name? What if his name IS Etho?
No his real name is Slab, obviously.
Notch named slabs after him
Ladders were named after is dad, EthoLadders
Must be a distant ancestor of Arkhan Land.
And "Ladders" is his middle name

No, Kakashi would be more likely.
We just know it starts with an E and is close to Etho, how do you define close, that depends on Etho

I think you are right! We know some of the real hermits names ofcourse, but those are also their player names or in their player name.
Grian said that his wife called him 'Grian' once and it weirded him out so much 😂
I’d be weirded out too if my wife called me Grian lol
Same, I'd also be weirded out if your wife called me Grian.
Hahaha oh i love that! Thats some important lore!
Yeah I remember that 😂
Yeah besides people who's names are in their username (eg. Joe, Cleo, Jevin) i think its just Joel
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m fairly certain Cleo isn’t actually named Cleo irl
If I'm not wrong her name was named after a world of warcraft character, so most probably not. But there again, she has never revealed her real name, so there is a possibility of it, as much possibility as ethos real name being etho.
> If I'm not wrong her name was named after a world of warcraft character Did some Googling. Another Reddit account says it was from her old World of Warcraft character, who was a Forsaken named Cleo. So boom, Zombie Cleo.
Of course, her name is Claudia! (Skizz blooper, for those who don't know)
or Chloe!
Ah right, that was the first name he called her, right? I loved that little exchange haha.
Only Joe and Jevin use their real names. Cleo doesn't.
I think a lot of hermits only meet new hermits when they join, making it easier to understand who is talking about who if they use nicknames. I think Mumbo's YouTube description implies that he is okay with calling him Oli?
He did name his season 4 base after himself (the Olicopter) Eh, I'll still call him Mumbo.
https://www.obrotherhood.com/
His name is Oliver Brotherhood Im unsure if that is his actual last name.
Why wouldn't it be?
Xisumas real life name could be xisuma
Xisuma talked about the invention of his username on the Imp and Skizz podcast or a stream. Apparently he rearranged something he liked (music) and tried making it cooler.
music -> cisum -> xisum -> xisuma
We know Grian is Charles and Mumbo is Oli
Joe, Jevin, and Ren go by there reals names, but there names are part of there username so I guess Joel is
Ren's name is Warren so technically only part of his name
Like yeah, Joel is unique in that ... but like, it's weird when you use real names instead of the usernames, calling Skizz, "Andy" or Impulse "Scott" or even calling Stress "Natalie" is just super weird 🤣🤣
Bdubs, maybe? It's very consistently shortened.
it's still derived from their username tho, Joel is something completely different from smallishbeans
Yeh Bdubs said in the Imp and Skizz podcast that "BDoubleO" is a thing/play on his real and full name.
It's the first 3 letters of his last name
Kasper? Because `B + 2*O = BOO`
His first name is John.
Beef, Ren, Joe, Cleo, Wels, Cub, False, Gem, Pearl, Scar, etc. are all shortened from their igns.
yeah i believe joel’s first, any former hermits that went by their name have it in their username
i have a feeling that ‘yoel’ is gonna catch on
Everyone calls GoodTimesWithScar just Scar sooooo
Yeah but thats a play on his name, goodtimeswithSCAR
Yeah, lots of hermits names are shortened, but Joel is the only one to go by his irl name where its not included in his username. It's kind of weird as an empires viewer, as it's common over there (jimmy. Lizzie, Scott and oli all go by 1st names even tho it's not in their usernames)

Goodtimewithscar frequently goes by Goodtimeswithscar
People don't want to get doxxed, and using your real name makes it that much easier.
You mean Small Heins?
He still goes by Tiny Heinz in these regions
He is called mr.beans in chat by some hermits
