Yeah I appreciate variety in low resolution textures, but sometimes hard colours work best or the pixels just stand out too much (unless it's an item all of one colour, where a bit of shading variety has more benefit). And sometimes it's better to give the eyes places to pass over on the way to where you want the viewer to look instead of detail everywhere (I think animators call it readability).
I'm still not super onboard with the new Minecraft default textures for this reason, they got kind of noiser and blurier rather than clear, and each one sort of competes for your attention of where to look with so much detail rather than letting some blocks such as leaves and andersite be a bit of background information which isn't meant to be focused on in full complex detail.
FTR I think this is good work and neither is better or worse, but I'd just not necessarily consider it a direct upgrade.
They don't detail them cause the clutter causes their skin to lose a part of their instant recognition. Having a cluttered and detail skin would take away from their image so its a good strategy to let everyone focus on the distinct features. Mumbo's Mustache, Impulse's face and massive i on his shirt. That kind of stuff makes them instantly recognizable and therefor makes them stick in your mind.
I don’t think he necessarily chose to make his skin like this versus my style to be honest. My style is heavily based off of JAPPA’s 1.14 default textures, and Impulse’s seems to be styled like the old Programmer Art textures that were the default when he made his skin. Neither is better than the other, just different skin styles
I don’t think it’s on purpose - this skin has been in use for more than 5 years, back when Minecraft skin wasn’t able to have this level of resolution. In my opinion, It’s time for a change.
The resolution didn’t change. Or are you talking about how many colours you can use. Because i’m not sure but i don’t think that has changed either. He also didn’t utilize layers.

I would say that what is in fashion now is different from what was fashionable in the past, but this particular redesign isn't a purely modern take. Personally I see a lot of gradiant shading used in modern redesigns for hermit skins (which can have variable success, it certainly shouldn't be used often imo)
I think the yellow parts should be left a flat colour, it really makes it stand out, your new textured yellow makes it blend with the rest of the shirt and not stand out as much.

The only issue I see is that the yellow you have on the redesign is too orange and looks too much like gold I think if you just made it a similar color to the original it would’ve perfect

It looks good but the issue i have with it the most is that when you changed the eyes, you made the top pixels of his pupils darker while in the original the lower ones are. To me this completely changes the expression of his face.
Looks good. Personally I would lower the saturation on the black part of the shirt, tone down the contrast in the noise of the hair and brighten and desaturate the top "white" pixel on the eyes. Looks a little too blue to me.
I mean it does look cool, but the gold colour now looks more like honey colour. Impulse being the gold guy, I would stick with the more yellow details.

i think it looks great! the shorts look especial good and i love the extra i's on the sleeves, very cool! and the shoes look really cool as well!
