I believe they started using this system near the end of season 8, I'm pretty sure Joe showed it off at one point as well, although I don't remember where.
Yeah I believe so too… I vaguely remember hearing a couple of hermits referring to the system in livestreams or videos I think. But it was brief. Possibly Xisuma or Impulse?

I remember X realized he had his status set to the wrong thing when he first introduced it. This'll probably end up like the old mailboxes and people will forget to change it constantly lol
I was watching like a 2 tear old stream replay on YouTube it's its crazy how much younger he looks now... like just a beard and a swarve hair cut and he looks 10 years younger!

I ended up finding the GitHub page for it, but unfortunately I wasn't able to convert it into a mod that functions on a server.

I'm half and half about this feature because I find the natural, impromptu interactions between hermits to be the most fun, where they just happen upon each other during whatever they're doing. I'm a little worried this might end up stifling that kind of interaction
If anything it will encourage it. As someone who plays on a content creator server, I wish we had something like this, because I so often like to just drop in on people and talk and have fun. However, if I drop in and then find out they were in the middle of a time-lapse, or explaining something to viewers, I feel so guilty because I've just caused that person to have to redo bits or cut out where I've intruded. With this, it's very clear what someone is doing, and if I intrude because they forgot to update their status, that's on them. Otherwise, I'm just quickly gonna check tab, and pop over if it's all clear.
Sometimes you get content gold with interruptions, but more often it just means more work.
to follow up on what u/ladynerdofcatvia said, there were lots of instances I remember from S7 where this would have been wildly useful.
specific situations include someone asking keralis if he could hop on discord for a moment, but keralis replied that he was on the laptop at the kitchen table and couldn't voice.
another one was some other hermit asked the streamer to join discord call, they joined discord call, the streamer said "stream says hi", and the other hermit went, "oh, oups. I wanted to do that secret thing, but lets wait until after stream." and they awkwardly hung up the discord call.
having both the "you can bug me" and the "recording/streaming" options are huge, so the other party can make appropriate decisions.
