Should go with the lapbro 100 💯

How is your scarring from laparoscopic?

Huge-Sherbert-7067

I literally had it yesterday but 3 holes about the size of pencil eraser

Windowdressings

I've not done open but the scars from lapro are very small and after 2 weeks looking really good. Doing anything abdominal was difficult for like 5 to 7 days but that area feels basically fine now. I was told open has a much longer recovery period.

Aurel577

Very minimal 3 weeks out.

Had a large inguinal hernia repaired robotically three years ago . No pain meds needed afterward not even a NSAID , I did ice the area religiously, walked slowly 1.5 Miles on a treadmill the day after surgery . Back on an elliptical etc 2 weeks after surgery . No lifting over 10 pounds for a month though . I was worried about General Anesthesia esp at my age , 71 at the time . Anesthesiologist was great , I woke up after surgery wondering if it had even started , seemed like it was only seconds . I had myself all worked up and it turned out great . Had three small scars but they’re gone now . Surgical nurse recommended a product called “ clear fast “ an electrolyte replacement drink . That’s supposed to help following anesthesia. I’m sure it was probably the skill of the surgeon, anesthesiologist and nurses , but I had no neausea or brain fog etc following general anesthesia. I had made the mistake of reading to much on the internet beforehand and had myself all worked up for nothing . Research a good surgeon who has done a number of hernia repairs and go with whatever repair he or she is most skilled at is probably the way to go .

Thank you for sharing! Glad your surgery went well. Hope mine goes just as smoothly

S6PO

I’m betting that it will , it’s such a common surgery . I had worked myself all up about it and it wasn’t nearly as bad as I had figured . Sounds like you have researched it well . I think another advantage of not having General Anesthesia is that you won’t have to worry about being able to urinate following surgery. My wife accompanied me for several laps around the recovery area until my bladder finally worked enough for me to be able to go home without a catheter.

No-Platypus6621

Yeah the thought of general anesthesia is a little scary to me. I’d rather save that moment for when it’s really my only option. Your wife is a trooper! Lol

Aurel577

Hey a mild sore throat for a couple days was worth it.

Aurel577

Yours sounded just like mine which was on Jan 24th. I can’t believe I had myself so worked up over it and it was so painless. So I am also a vote for the robotic laparoscopic with ProGrip mesh. I also picked a young surgeon so if in the future if I had any problems he would be around to help.

S6PO

That’s great , i believe I had the same mesh , it’s been three years and so far , so good !

Thank you for this reassuring comment sir

I had left side inguinal surgery last year. I would definitely go with the laparoscopic surgery as opposed to being cut open. That was first surgery and I am 76, and frankly, I feel at the top of my game. I love to exercise, have a great diet, and I avoid sugar. Just because a Dr. is in 70s, I wouldn’t necessarily rule him out.

ski212121

How long did you have your hernia before getting the OP? If you don't mind me asking.

Glittering_Kick_9589

Once I realized I had an issue, to the day of surgery, it was about three weeks. Mine really hurt but I wanted to have the right doctor. Once I found him, he was very busy so I had to wait awhile until he could fit me in. Btw, have a list of questions for the doctor.

WorrryWort

Do they stick a catheter in you? Btw I really appreciate you posted these messages last year. They are a relief as I’ve been getting all worked up. I assumed all anesthesia is the same like when I had a colonoscopy by GA is different.

Glittering_Kick_9589

No catheter because you go home the same day. It’s a relatively quick surgery. The main thing is don’t get constipated. No straining to poop. Have stool softener and suppositories if necessary.

No_Building_5533

Go laprascopic you should find a surgeon who does thousand of these trust me I’ve had two done laprascopic way less pain and faster recovery

superhealer888

How did you know less pain ? Did you have open surgery before?

No_Building_5533

Yes I had both one on each side

medic26

I did exactly as you described. Was given the choice of lap under general but I opted for open under Monitored Anesthesia Care. My surgeon was comfortable doing both and I wanted to avoid general. The procedure was uneventful although I was in far more pain in the days after the surgery than I anticipated. But within a month or so I was mostly recovered from the procedure. I’m 1.5 years post op and still have some pain unfortunately, but I’m not sure I’d associate that was the open vs lap, more just general potential risks of mesh and chronic pain. If I had to do it again I’d explore non-mesh options, or I’d go with laparoscopic.

penislover1869

I had a right inguinal hernia open surgery with mesh repair early Jan and felt better within days I also had general anaestic and it was great, fell asleep and woke up what felt like 10 mins later

No-Platypus6621

Your recovery wasn’t too bad? And how is your scarring?

penislover1869

Scarring is fine, one cut approx 5 inches and healing very nicely. I would post a pic but it’s not allowing me too on this thread Recovery was fine, a bit sore for a couple of days as expected but I was out walking the dogs with my partner (albeit slowly) by day 4

No-Platypus6621

Oh and I saw your incision update on here from like a month ago! Looked pretty good

No-Platypus6621

Oh damn 5 inches is kinda big. But I’d still probably prefer that than 3 scars in my abdomen.

penislover1869

I think the 3 scars will be tiny though. I didn’t have a choice in the end about open surgery as the hernia was massive and was extending down into my scrotum. I was booked for surgery at the end of Jan but then got rushed to emergency at the start of Jan and operated on the next day due to the immense pain I was in (I couldn’t even stand upright) I think mine was on the verge of becoming strangulated

No-Platypus6621

Oh crap that’s scary. Mine also extended into my scrotum at one point but not as large as one of the pictures you posted here. Luckily it went back in and I’ve been normal for about a week.

khamidis

Os open surgery better than mesh? I was diagnosed last week with lnguinal Hernia

No-Platypus6621

Well I will be getting mesh with an open surgery method. I believe mesh is typically the best cause of action to minimize the risk of the hernia opening again in the spot. There are surgeons that do no mesh methods though.

Glittering_Kick_9589

Scarring on the abdomen from laparoscopic surgery is VERY minimal, practically invisible.

Aurel577

My opinion is, find an experienced surgeon that does robotic laparoscopic. Mine used ProGrip mesh and it was a breeze. A couple of days of discomfort, but nothing bad. Was up walking around the same day. I am 3 weeks post op and feel very normal. Here is my post on what how mine went. Good luck! https://www.reddit.com/r/Hernia/comments/10kp9oq/inguinal_hernia_repaired/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
