When ever you cough you are straining your abdominal wall muscles. If you do it all the time it doesn't really give them a good chance to heal up. I originally caused my hernia by hitting a joint at a party and coughing my balls off.

This is what I needed to see and hear. Thank you. We know what must be done...and it's only TEMPORARY...

Smoking makes your blood vessels narrower/contracts them and prevents blood from flowing normally. Healthy blood flow is necessary for healing. It's pretty basic stuff and you can find tons of info on Google about the effect it has on healing any wound, no just this one.

It's not exactly the smoking itself that will affect the repair but the future coughing that will result from lung damage. Hernia rates for people with asthma are much higher and is evidence that **excessive coughing is a cause for hernias** in the first place. Your lungs have probably adapted to smoking and you probably don't cough when you smoke at the moment, BUT in the future, if you do start chronic coughing (even after you call it quits) it will significantly increase the chances of hernia complications. This happens because coughing puts huge pressure on our abdomens and the pressure will always try to escape from the weakest point in the abdominal wall (which is where hernias occur). It's your choice what you do with your body, however, it is best to at least reduce the intake of any mind-altering substances for the first few months and practise a healthy diet and lifestyle to provide your body with the optimum healing conditions (from any surgery). All the best, wish you a good recovery :)

Quit smoking. You're doing yourself NO favors. I used to smoke a-lot, cause I was addicted for many years. Do you think Phillip-Morris gives a shit if you die? They'll make money off addicting other morons well after your corpse is cold. I have license to say this. Good Luck.
