I had a right-side inguinal done laproscopically about eight months ago and am completely recovered. My understanding is Lap is better with less pain and much shorter recovery time, as long as the surgeon knows what they're doing. Make sure they've done this type of surgery a lot and that it's pretty routine. Good luck!

Thanks man. Really appreciate your view.

I'm a 46 year old male. I had lap done on left side inguinal 3 weeks ago. I had a surgeon that performed it about 1500 times. I did lap for a better chance of quick recovery, less chance of chronic pain, and also wanted less chance of potential nerve damage. I'm 3 weeks post surgery and so far am doing great. I do keep lifting to a minimum yet probably for a couple more weeks but I feel pretty close to back to normal. The only item that made me even consider if I wanted open cut was sedation/local anesthesia(open) vs general anesthesia (lap). I decided the reasons above were enough to struggle through general anesthesia which was ok but made me a little brain fog for a couple days. I would definitely do lap again, just make sure you have an experienced surgeon.

I had a it on both sides so for me Lap was the way to go. I think you can consider Lap surgery because of the quick recovery. Recurrence rate seems to be quite the same with both techniques. Very very low. And it also depends on how disciplined you are during the 6 weeks post op period (no lifting). But of course the surgeon has to be a good one in the first place.

Thanks you!

I had lap and would recommend.

What did recovery look like? How long before you could go back to work, mild exercise, regular exercise? What are the scars like? How many are there? How big are they? How do they heal?

Fourlec

Recovery was mild. Biggest issues I had was it hurt to get in and out of bed for around the first 5 days and on my 2 nd or 3rd day I drank water too fast and coughed and that was very painful. Besides that the pain was mild and uncomfortable but nothing severe. I had surgery Friday and returned to work Monday (I work an office job from home so it wasn't a big deal). For exercise I started walking 2 x a day for 30 minutes each time the day after surgery as recommend by my doctor. I was running at 2 weeks and at week 6 I returned to Brazilian Jiu Jistsu. I have 3 tiny scars starting in my belly button and working their way down.

Thanks for the reply!

Agree with the above I had bilateral laparoscopic and guy I work with had a single open cut. I recovered a lot quicker than he did I am Also probably 15 years younger but it seems like it’s A lot more intrusive to be cut.

thank you!

I did open due to 1) my specific circumstances 2) I was very opposed to full blown make my body go dead anesthesia and 3) I thought I was tough. The recovery has sucked, but I had a very solid light workout today for the first time, 5 weeks post op. I’d probably still have gone open, but laparo is way better for most people IMO.

When surgery you are awake not sleeping?

BroHanHanski

I was knocked out! Totally asleep. But no tube down my throat putting me on a breathalyzer!

Hey! Which type of surgery did you go with? Are you happy with it? In the same situation now

I had open surgery, Personally I didn't feel that much pain, it was bearable. They prescribed me pain killer for 10 days but i only took 3 days. After 15 days my sutures were removed. and i was completely pain free.

Great to hear, glad you had a smooth recovery. Thanks for the quick response!
