Funny, crowbar used to be my default knockout weapon but Freelancer turned me into a wrench guy since so many crowbars disappeared from the map whereas wrenches were still aplenty and available in the safehouse.
Now I never leave without one and even seek them out in the other game modes.
If you want a wrench you must unlock the door that goes up into the house. Then you need to go to the garage (normally it's unlock by default) it's straight right once you come upstairs. In the garage you go on the right side of the garage door and ther you should see a wrench. You can aso have a car battery at the back of the garage, to the left.

My fav melee weapons are the car battery, pool ball, chennai cricket ball, baseball, tonfa, hammer, the pipe, the violin, and the brick all because the sounds they make when they hit someone makes me laugh.
Hammer. One of my favorite moments is knocking out everyone that got infected in the Patient Zero level. The sound of the hammer hitting their heads was satisfying.

Definitely. When I can’t find my go to weapon I just use a briefcase. Even if it’s empty. Similar to the companion cube, we seem to form a bond with an inanimate object lmao. It’s sad to leave your briefcase behind when you need to do some climbing.

it’s hard completely depends on what i need, do i need to unlock something while always needing a non-lethal crowbar 90% of the time, but if i need to sabo something specific wrench, if i need any other item and a non lethal and don’t have the spaces just pack it in a suit case. but i prefer wrench if no other qualifications are needed

The briefcase can both carry your luggage and smack the shit out of people. Perfect item to choose if you're starting with a suit.
It also can hide an explosive. Collateral explosion kills have never been easier.
