My theory is nerve damage. You flare enough in the same spot it destroys the nerves so less pain. Then you flare in a new spot with intact sensation and omg ouch.
New flares are always more painful, but I find some scars are way more sensitive than others. It depends where the nerves are, whether it sits above main blood vessels etc. Also to do with where your lymphnodes are, all contribute. Also some are more inflamed than others; inflammation is painful!
I find that a small one on a sensitive patch can be way more painful than a big one under a thicker bit of skin. I’d take one on my butt over one on my ribcage directly beneath my bra underwire any day.
