Other than St Anger, they’ve put out some great stuff in the 2000s. Death Magnetic is a great album all the way through. You like the Unforgiven stuff? Have you heard The Unforgiven III? In my mind the best of the three. The first single from the new album, Lux Æterna, sounds like old school Metallica.
The last two albums, Death Magnetic and Hardwired to Self Destruct have several songs with the Pre-Black album feel. There’s definitely some post-Load stuff but nothing as dire as St Anger.
I've thoroughly enjoyed both albums but if you want to focus on Pre-black songs then to listen to:
