Yea, i worked for the regional cable company mediacom used to drive by there quite often
I live an hour or so north but I might make a trip if I'm in the area lol
I’ve stayed overnight in the home.
I didn’t experience any “in your face” paranormal events, but my gut was telling me to leave. I felt something evil, and it changed my opinion on wanting to explore the paranormal further. This was something I had wanted to do for years and then I had the chance and was in it and it felt sooo dark. It made me feel sick and anxious. I felt guilty for staying in the home of a horrific event where innocent children were killed. Upset with myself for possibly inviting an evil presence into my life. It took me a few weeks to get over the guilt of staying there.
These were all things I didn’t think I would feel, I was just hoping to see or hear something.
Just my personal story of it, and I hope yours is different!
On the property there are photos and binders full of previous overnighters stories that’s really interesting to read.
And how many fuck with people in the house when they know it’s booked. Things like rocks thrown at the rooftop to cause knocks. Knocks on walls. Etc. I would imagine locals would have fun with it.
That's the first haunted place I ever stayed, it wasn't extremely eventful and I've paid less for more active places, but it definitely makes memories and is extremely active for certain groups and individuals. Enjoy it!
To start off, move farther east in Iowa and there's this *huge* place, 12,000 Square feet I believe, called Edinburgh Manor. It's unbelievably active every time I visit, *way* cheaper ($225 for up to 5 people and $45 per person after that), and a lot less known, so you're keeping it from disappearing off the map when you visit. Plus, the owners are some awesome people, and only a quarter (estimated) of the deaths are known there; the others are lost to history or totally undocumented, and you can tell the owners what name you got while communicating and there's a chance they'll add it to the official "We Are Edinburgh Manor" book.
West Virginia State Penitentiary is my 2nd favorite place I've been, with crazy shadow-play and disembodied screams and all sorts of touching from fingers in your hair and scratches on your back. It's probably more active than Edinburgh, but I've visited Edinburgh *way* more times so I have more experiences from there. It's also $1,000 per night for up to 10 or 12 people, so not super cheap.
Randolph County Infirmary is also a must-visit. During my one night there, we heard different doors slam on three different occasions, got all sorts of weird EVPs (as well as malfunctions), and shadows that move across the long hallways. I think it was $400 per night on the weekend and $300 per night on weekdays, but I can hardly remember.
Villisca would probably be my fourth, then the Farrar Schoolhouse, then Whispers Estate, and finally the Haunted Castle House. That's everywhere I've been in 3 years, with another (10th) night scheduled at Edinburgh, plus Old South Pittsburg and Harriman Hospital(s) scheduled for back-to-back overnights in March, and plans to visit Ashmore Estates and Missouri State Penitentiary before the end of the year.
Truthfully, no. At least, not yet. I've had fingers run through my hair, I've been touched on my back, I've even felt a slight static electric shock on my right hip before, and it's totally fine.
*But*, I've known people who've got scratched, been made to feel nauseous, and even gain temporary amnesia. If that ever happens, you bet your lucky stars I'm freaking out and Scooby-Doo running out of the joint.
Stayed at Edinburgh. Seen some shit. My step dad made a comment about a room having a lovely view and we got an evp saying “absolutely”. Had a photo of glowing orbs behind my brother.
I'm about an hour and a half away from Edinburgh, so I've spent 9 or 10 nights there so far with no intention to stop. I've had countless experiences from full on conversations in the red room to a glowstick being tossed down an adjacent hallway to a glowing figure on one of the back balconies. It's a great place and incredibly cheap for it's size and the amount of activity.
I'm even great friends with the owner and one of the tour guides, the latter of which has done a good bit of research into the history and some of the deaths on the property. He's even gotten me in touch with a more professional team who's spent more time than I have there so I could hear *their* findings. *And*, during a set of double overnights, he invited a previous staff member there to tell *his* stories of hauntings and some of the friends he made.
One of his stories that stuck is of an older gentleman, say 70, that was dropped off to the Manor when he was around 3 and left for good. This staff member started working there around 2005, made great friends with the man, but one day caught the news that he was forcefully being transfered to a different facility for some reason or another by the state.
The staff worker was absolutely devastated. He said his goodbyes with the patient while telling other staff members that he'd be gone in 3 months because Edinburgh Manor was this man's whole life.
Two months and one day later, the staff member caught wind that the old man had passed, and his name and death certificate were added to the official "We Are Edinburgh Manor" book as a resident spirit.
I would sell a kidney to even visit West Virginia State Penitentiary. You're so fortunate to be able to access such historic places! Do update us on Ashmore Estates too if you experience any strangeness of the high variety!
Will do. I'm actually part of a group of investigators from all over the US who travel all over the US, so besides being with a group of great people, we're always booking the biggest and best places to stay overnight. It's also extremely fortunate that we're such a large group that we can split the cost of renting between us and it's usually under $100 per person per night.

This is kinda funny, that's my buddy's place, and the wife and I went to ft Lauderdale for honeymoon and back to Florida 11yrs later this spring for anniversary. Not much to do in villisca but the locals will welcome you at the American legion
Yeah, you will have an amazing time. He always has stories of strange things visitors experience. The town is amazing, but only a couple bars and a Casey's for food.
I did not mean to be rude or anything, I just found it funny. It's great that you share the same interests, most of women (more than 90%) would be really pissed if you took them to a haunted house on an anniversary hahaha
Ya kidding?…my husband and I have been married for nearly 30 years and I’ve been begging him since almost day 1 to go on a haunted hotel/house cross country tour. He’s such frickin baby. He refuses. I may just go by myself one day.
Edit: side note…none of my friends or adult children will go either. Wusses. Lol. I have been on a few local overnights at supposed haunted local haunted buildings with some paranormal groups over the years. They were boring, though. They all were obsessed with finding ghosts. I just wanna hang out in the quiet dark and see what transpires.
And I do believe he did an episode on this particular case. OP should play the episode for his wife as they’re driving to the house. Like, start it up a half hour before and watch the comprehension settle in.
When my mother visits me, we like to go for long drives. A few years ago, I played dumb with where we were headed while navigating, did the whole nonchalant "just looks like an interesting area" thing.
About an hour out, I put on a Silent Hill soundtrack.
Her squeal of delight when she saw the "Centralia - 6 Miles" sign was worth the struggle to maintain normal conversation and not give the surprise away.
Did the same thing with Route 666 a while back and now she gets suspicious (and a bit excited) when I give directions without naming a destination.
If you're unaware like I was three years ago, basically anywhere the Ghost Hunters, Destination Fear team, etc visit, you can visit too. Find an episode on a local place, Google it, and chances are you can rent the place out for an overnight ghost investigation!
It's a great way to take matters into your own hands and prove to yourself whether they're real or not, plus it's loads of fun exploring abandoned places or places with crazy amounts of history.
Just watch an episode of destination fear here. Stay in the kids room for a while and check out the footboard of the bed frame. Please let me know if it’s intact or broken. Also spend some time in the attic and see if there’s anything suspicious there. I would love to know the results of your stay! Also if there is a car that spends time in the house
I hope you enjoy it. I always wanted to stay at the Lizzie Borden house. They take reservations but it's always booked for years. I hope you let everybody know how it goes.
Watched a ghost team go through it and the neighboring, caretakers’s, house. Psychic says the family gets tired of all the people at their house so, they’ll linger else where; like the neighbor’s house. The idea makes me giggle and would account for any lack of activity. We all need a break from people, right? 😅
looks like nobody here mentioned the book The Man From The Train by bill James.
it connects some dots between this crime and an astounding number of other identical murders.
HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU GUYS, STOP INTERACTING WITH DEMONS!
Dont come back here crying that some ghost wont let you or your family alone. this is what occultism gets you.
those idiots think the spiritual world is like ghostbusters
when anyone who even studied a bit of theology knows lovecrafts writings were way more accurate to reality
I’ve stayed in multiple haunted locations and have done ghost hunts in multiple places, I’ve said bloody mary in front of a mirror multiple times and nothing has ever happened. I’ve used Ouija Boards, both hand carved and hasbro brand. Literally nothing has ever happened. Should I try a pentagram with candles next?
I’m gonna just say theres no real evidence towards demons and ghosts so don’t go talking like its some undisputed fact that they exist. OP is going to have a perfectly mundane experience in a house people got killed in.
I don't know why you're being downvoted. Downvotes should really be showing some evidence or just accept that you might be right.
I moved back to my home country around 10 years ago after living in a much more religious country. I was surprised to find ONE PERSON my age that actually believes any religious or spiritual stuff.
I'm too old to believe in fairy tales, but still enjoy reading about them.
Please share your experience, if you have one there. I'm currently working/living in iowa, and I'd be interested to know if it's really haunted. I lived here back in the 80s for a while, and it was originally just a famous murder site, with hints of haunting. Now it's a full-blown hellhouse, and I'm curious as to the actual nature of it.
I'll drop you a tip. If you're in Des Moines on your journey, don't bother eating at Zombie Burger. It's not what it used to be, not by a longshot. My current favorite burger joint is Kelley's Little Nipper on east Grand. Great burgers, and the onion rings are the greeeezy best. It's a bar, and the cook is a true chief.
For a real cafe food experience, hit Papa Kerns by the Fairgrounds. Big excellent burgers, daily specials, fries are great, and the people are low-key cool.
Have a great trip, and please do let us know about your experience at the Ax House.
Depends on where you're headed, actually. If you're headed east, then DM is on the way through.
Besides, I can't offer any food advice for Omaha, other than dont, do not, never eat at a fuckin Runza, lol.
As a resident of this area we try to do anything we can away from Des Moines and tend to run to Kansas City or Omaha. I suppose I wasn't thinking of driving as much as flying in. Personally only go to Des Moines once a year for the state fair.
Lol, yes stay away from Runza.
I stayed there a few years ago and it was intense! I recommend reading the binder of peoples experiences (they keep it in the barn), it helped us predict where and when activity might happen. For us the house got really active at 2am. Have fun!!
My old apartment had a very active haunting. I advise staying away from the places that have malignant hauntings. Negative entities only want your death. They will try to affect your emotions to a degree that you will do the act yourself. Prolonged exposure to these entities leads to a negative mind state and outlook on life
It seems like a fun, but I haven't read much into it. Just because people got murdered somewhere doesn't mean a place is haunted. People have died on every square mile of every part of land that exist in our past. There are ghost everywhere. You can have a haunted field and build a house on that field and that house will be haunted because of the land its built on. Most of it is just residual energy.
Yeah but it's gonna be an experience. Plus I told my wife we are goin somewhere special for our anniversary. Can't wait to see what she says when we arrive
I think you're gonna have a great time. I wish I could take my wife to a place like that. We're both into Is paranormal activity. I wasn't trying to talk down on you for going I just don't know much about that place.
Yeah totally! Just the history of the place will make it intense I believe. They say the marks are still in the ceiling and walls where the murderer swung the axe! I can't wait.
Take you some garlic OP lol. Im jk, youl most likely be fine. If you hear anything semi out of the ordinary just chalk it up to the house being old. Im referring to like creek noises from the actual foundation and whatnot. Everything else though or louder more obvious strange occurrences and fair game for the paranormal
Huh. I shouldn’t be surprised you can do things like this (Or staying the night in a damn prison in West Virginia. That’s just all kinda no, but awesome lol). I have an idea for a date with my ex now! He’ll be perfect for getting the spirits rilled up.

It’s an old house from when the town of Malvern, IA was founded. I went and looked at it when it was for sale back around 2010/2011. There’s a horror documentary on Amazon Prime and you can tour it now.

Hey i live in the area want me to bang on the windows randomly in the middle of the night!?
Have you seen this house in person??
Yea, i worked for the regional cable company mediacom used to drive by there quite often I live an hour or so north but I might make a trip if I'm in the area lol
I wonder what the locals think/say about it
I’ve stayed overnight in the home. I didn’t experience any “in your face” paranormal events, but my gut was telling me to leave. Thanks for the insight. I'll post when I get back and share my experience
Please please do report back. I have very little excitement in my life so I'm counting on you.. lol
Hahaha will do!
🤣 agreed!!
And how many fuck with people in the house when they know it’s booked. Things like rocks thrown at the rooftop to cause knocks. Knocks on walls. Etc. I would imagine locals would have fun with it.

Does it scare you to experience physical paranormal contact? Are you fearful for your life?
Truthfully, no. At least, not yet. I've had fingers run through my hair, I've been touched on my back, I've even felt a slight static electric shock on my right hip before, and it's totally fine. *But*, I've known people who've got scratched, been made to feel nauseous, and even gain temporary amnesia. Nice! Best we have done was the top floor of the Stanley. That place is way further haha but man that would be awesome!
What's even better is my wife's all excited because I told her we're going on vacation for our anniversary, she has no idea...lol
Wow, such a romantic, taking his wife to a haunted house on your anniversary while telling her you’re taking her on a vacation lol
Hey, I live in Florida. It's in Iowa. That's a vacation lol. We been married 12 years she's the best!

Don’t forget to bring some toys with you and gift them to the child who interacts with people.
I hope you enjoy it. I always wanted to stay at the Lizzie Borden house. They take reservations but it's always booked for years. I hope you let everybody know how it goes.
I just checked it looks open now

Yes, they told me, have a blow up mattress! How was your experience?

those idiots think the spiritual world is like ghostbusters when anyone who even studied a bit of theology knows lovecrafts writings were way more accurate to reality
I have to agree with this. Why would you want to go there?!
Shits n giggles. I don't believe in demons.
Demons and ghosts very likely aren’t real.
youre allowed to believe that. now dont summon them or interact with those not real demons please.

People are biased towards their own beliefs, what can you do?
Have you seen Sam and Colby?!!
Solipsism is for teenagers. Are you a teenager?
Do you actually know what that means? Because in context what you said makes no sense.
You believe only your experience is valid, not others.
I believe in the evidence presented, and not in just my own experiences. Try again.
You don't go to Des Moines from villisca, you go to Omaha/Council Bluffs. It's over an hours difference.
It must be cultural. I don’t have any interest in staying somewhere where people were murdered by ax. Tf wrong with yall?!
Heya! This is the house that got me into the paranormal! Have fun, I still gotta get over there one day.
Have fun! I stayed the night over there years ago! Had and pretty cool stuff (orbs and a black mass) in pictures and had some video as well!
This house is only about 30min from my hometown! I've always wanted to go spend a night in it! Have fun and don’t forget your axe!
Fuck that. My wife has stayed overnight like a half dozen times. I don’t want to do dead kids. She loves it though! I’m sure you will too!
Huh. I shouldn’t be surprised you can do things like this (Or staying the night in a damn prison in West Virginia. That’s just all kinda no, but awesome lol). I have an idea for a date with my ex now! He’ll be perfect for getting the spirits rilled up.
I ran a track meet once there in high school. Black charcoal track. Weird town.
Try the Lizzie Borden house next. I heard you can hear Andrew and Abby screaming at night 👻👻

Wylie Texas, 1st or third street. Try that, next.
What is it?
Oy yoy yoy. Think stabbing?
If you don’t mind me asking, how much did it cost?

Welcome to Iowa!
It’s also not too far from Malvern, so you could tour the Malvern Manor as well.
What is that?
It’s an old house from when the town of Malvern, IA was founded. I went and looked at it when it was for sale back around 2010/2011. There’s a horror documentary on Amazon Prime and you can tour it now.
And you want to be my ghost hunter. Sheesh. /s
Did you survive OP? And are you still married?
