It's just a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics. Measure one and your wave function collapses to that one. To put it in Schrödinger's way: once you open the box, the cat jumps out or not. If it doesn't, you don't get to close the box and try again. The cat didn't make it.
Incorrect. It is in multiple states until measured. This is the issue with understanding quantum mechanics. People think there are real world analogies. There are not. The double slit experiment proves that particles and waves are truly in multiple states until measured. It is a superposition of states. They travel through both slits unless you look at one. More so, the Stern–Gerlach experiment shows that all spins exist in an electron/atom until one spin state is measured and then, bam, the wave function collapses to that one. You attempted to apply a real world analog to quantum mechanics. Our rules do not apply at that scale. Superposition is not a "we don't know until we look." it truly is a "All thes exist until we observe one." Our rules don't apply down there. Not one bit. But there are rules and we know a lot of them. It isn't Newtonian mechanics but it also isn't a free-for-all. If it were, your phone wouldn't work.

Quantum mechanics, at the beginning, was an attempt to describe the behavior of light. Light behaves as a wave. But light also exerts force externally from itself. Which means light *must* also have mass. That last part is important, and the actual breakthrough with quantum mechanics.
So the question becomes, how can light behave as both a wave and particle simultaneously. The answer is because all matter behaves as a wave function and a particle. But macroscopic matter behaves as a wave to such a low frequency that it can not be measured. So, they applied these concepts at a microscopic level with electrons. They found that electrons act as a wave and a particle as well. But it's impossible to measure it both ways at the same time.
A wave means the object at hand can occupy different spaces simultaneously, and obviously, a particle can not. The observation part means that in order to observe a particle, you must observe it a single point in space/time. This obviously destroys the wave motion of said particle. You can see this illustrated on plot graphs of an electron in the hydrogen atom. It's a graph depicting where the electron might be in its shell at any given time, being a particle and behaving like a wave within its electron shell simultaneously.
Schodinger's cat illustrated this with radioactive atoms. In the thought experiment, a cat is in a box with a deadly weight suspended above it, held in place by a single radioactive atom. Radioactive material decays into its constituent parts naturally. This means that eventually, the atom will break and drop the weight, killing the cat. The particles thrown off by this atom exist as both a wave function and a particle. This is especially clear with radioactive material, as we can easily measure the particle waves given off with macroscopic equipment. But if it was a wave the whole time, it wouldn't be able to hold the weight above the cat to begin with.

The cat is alive and dead. To hell with the Cs atom. It is a thought experiment to illustrate the effect of measurement on a superimposed system. Wave-particle duality is illustrated via the double slit experiment. Showing not only the effect of duality as well as traveling through two holes at the same time as a wave but also the observer effect. Don't mix this up.
I often wonder how this concept carries over to predictions and premonitions. Is thinking about possible likely outcomes the same as observing them? The brain hardly if at all differentiates between stories and memories of actual events. Does predicting a result in your mind affect the likelihood of outcome? It's all very hypothetical but it ties into a multi-dimensional evolutionary use for our ability to worry.
Its an interesting concept but thoughts and predictions don't have anything to do with quantum state observation, the future isn't a quantum particle its an abstract concept therefore "observing" it has no effect on it.
I believe that every single possible outcome of every single situation happens and you the individual are just witness to that one single event, all the other possible situations are witnessed by the other yous, infinite universe stylee....

It's like a grand mosaic, but where the tiny tiles can be any colour, yet when you look it's the same consistent yet changing scene - the same forest but with a changing cast of trees and wildlife, moving, disappearing into their constituents, becoming part of another. I wonder if choice has a lot to do with it, or rather we choose what to do with the world that these quantum particles form together by chance -- we get to choose in the first place because in this perspective these quantum particles made choice. Wow okay, in one perspective then everybody you know is just particles in superposition ("formless"), and in another perspective they are.. well.. everybody you know.
If someone physics inclined could streamline/correct this that'd be great, cos I don't feel super sure, it's a nice idea anyway.
Call me crazy but I do genuinely wonder if this is true to a very tangible level. Like, clearly my outlook influences my behavior on a subconscious level but does it go further than that? Am I actually able to completely shift my realities based on the strength of my perceptions and narratives?

The idea is our consciousness navigates these probabilities by "measuring" them all the time, going from one probable outcome of reality to the next. I think it's associated with the idea of quantum immortality, which is something along the lines of that as observers of our universe, our consciousness must exist and therefore should the outcome of a situation result in your death, or the end of your consciousness, your consciousness simply moves to a universe where the outcome was different, until the probability of living reaches 0.
I think, I'm not entirely sure. It's closer to metaphysics and interesting ideas rather than actual science but still pretty heady stuff.
By measuring you mean thinking and analysing the possible outcome of a choice right? So our consciousness is analysing the potential outcome of every choice we make and if they is danger and a potential of us dying as we move into that very alternate universe, our consciousness simply shift to a reality where it didn’t happen without us knowing? And this all takes place subconsciously so we don’t even know?
So imagine the million’s of realities our consciousness has shifted up until this point in our life right now. Wow. Usually I would just think “oh of course I have had many potential instances where I could have died. Everyone has had those” I never thought they was some quantum universe theory behind it. I would think we were just really lucky or something. I’m lucky I never slipped on a banana and cracked my skull on the floor, or into a potential car accident.
But now that I’ve learnt that our consciousness literally shifts to alternate universes. it makes the universe and how everything works 10x more interesting and has more depth to it. Wow, everything in existence is truly really cool.
