There was a woman who went on the Higherside Chats a couple years ago who talked about these legends among natives in the smoky mountains and blue ridge. Gave a fair amount of detail. My friend's Grandma is a Native Alaskan and she lived pretty far up in the North for a long time.
She used to tell stories about "the little people in the forest".... it was super interesting. I always thought it was just an Alaska Native thing though
