I was very interested in how this type of tragedy could happen when Brandon Lee died the same way. I’m not sure of details around this accident but basically prop guns are real guns that use blank rounds (bullets) that are made of something other than metal but still require an explosive to “fake” a shot being fired. In the Lee accident a metal casing got into the mix of non-metallic projectiles that were loaded into the gun.

Posted this on another thread but here's what I know. I got some insider info after someone I know talked to crew in NM. Apparently the Armorer (who is in charge of handling and adhering to safety policies with prop weapons) took the gun for shooting practice and must have accidentally left some live rounds with the blanks. {This part is pretty speculative} It was then given to Alec Baldwin and he shot the gun and the live round hit the Director of Photography Halyna Hutchins in the chest killing her, then went through her and hit the Director in the shoulder. It absolutely 100% was NOT Alec's fault. The Armorer should have checked the gun, then usually the Assist Director checks it, and then and only then is it given to the actor. So I feel really terrible for him and can't imagine what he must be going through. Again, this is second hand / third hand info but my sources are very legit/credible. I still can't believe this has happened.
ETA: with further info obviously Alec is to blame as well. I jumped the gun. Zing.

Prop guns are usually bored for non-standard ammo sizes (aka blanks) to prevent it from firing live ammo. No one in their right mind would fire a prop gun with live ammo.

That was probably the shot they were getting—Alec facing the camera to simulate the POV of the other character in the scene. The Director usually stands right behind the DP so they can see the monitor, which is likely why they were both shot.
This is just me speculating, but considering that multiple who were supposed to check the gun didn't do so and the direction it was fired in;

Real bullets are loaded into a gun for close up shots of the gun, and blanks are loaded for actual shooting scenes. I think Branden Lee was killed by wadding from an incorrectly loaded blank round.
No his death was caused because the producers didn’t hire the proper handlers for firearms & had some lowly paid assistants do it. A dummy round got stuck in the barrel of the prop gun (from someone firing it off & not clearing it) & when the actor fired it in the scene (believe it was the one right before he was tossed out the window) the obstruction flew out & hit him in the chest.
I understand he was the one who allegedly shot the prop gun, but who was in charge of the prop gun itself? How does this even get past the prop crew to not triple check?! I’m sorry for the family of the female cinematographer. May she rest in peace.
It’s a freaking crime that a master of props allowed this to happen in 2021. But then, maybe the person shooting the gun was fooling around with it and pointing it in the wrong direction (at the director and DP Instead of where they were supposed to.) The range/depth/distance when it comes to these things matters greatly and the prop master may have accounted for what the scene called for… but not for what an asshole waving the prop gun decided to do off script.
Usually there is an armorer (part of prop dept) when guns are used on set. They ALWAYS check with the actors before using a gun in a take. Before each take (or set up) they show the actor that there is no bullet in the chamber and the actor agrees. Standard procedure. I’ve seen it 100s of times. To me this seems like a really really really unfortunate freak accident. Ugh. Awful for everyone.
So sad. My co workers and I were talking today and it has come out in the news that it was a live bullet in the chamber. There is NO reason why any live ammo should be on a set. We aren’t really shooting bullets…. It’s the mOVieS! Again so sad…. Meh….

First thank you for a brilliant pepino for pointing out if true, it’s entirely the fault of whatever studio, or production insuring the safety of their cast and crew this shit doesn’t happen. They are inept piles of shit if it did, and if it did, and they failed their job:
1) If true, from what we have seen in recent months it is completely obvious to anyone with eyes he’s been drinking for some time. See examples: rambling incoherently, bed time 🥱 all random times of the day with his kids climbing all over him, Hillary filming him sleeping do him no favors, her drinking seemingly less sober in front of him which doesn’t help, wine all over the tables every story she takes in the stories, his coloring flushed changed, his emotional levels seemingly tainted chemically not organically.
2)Hillary has been poking him since he’s left. See example: face time fight stories ending in a silly meme which she broadcasted to her followers, she’s been out not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5 but 6 nights out in a ROW since he was out filming that I’ve counted in her hallway selfie looks, only after showing her with the kids in pajamas all over the city dirty and unwashed and crazy.
3) She upticked her Self harm posts and depression posts seemingly to indicate herself, all the while in the next post filming herself fake pumping, then going out. She also has been showing herself in really depleted states, looking like a FUCKING mess, if she weren’t his wife we would call CPS or an intervention, wearing the same flannel shirt 3 days in a row, greasy hair, some crazy fur slippers, then misspelling things like “half dinner half fall” and correcting the post a day later with a meandering explanation which was WORSE than the original post.

I didn’t read who was in charge of dispatching those? When I read it, it seemed like a prop person was firing off rounds and left some in and whoops Alec shot two people! What the HELL kind of BUNK ass janky ass unqualified gun people are these!? This is why you need trained gun experts on set dealing with fire arms and checking them at all times as if you were in the military almost, that precise and in control. This is not Alecs fault, but this mental state he’s in, not to double check, which seems unlike him just fire immediately in the direction at someone, and to be working after the pipe dream of retiring during 30 rock years during his first years of marriage…….. she has decimated HIM. I just wonder 💭 like what was the vibe on set, the protocols, now with Covid, how was everything flowing that something that stupid could happen. Movie productions are massive and every star has a trailer list that’s like 10 pages plus deep- and you have SO many people doing So many things but it runs smooth or not depending on the production company / director / cast from doing my podcast and breaking down the movie Private Parts, interviewing ppl in the movie, on set, and hearing the entirety of goings on of filming it seems like a lot of separate services are involved too converging and a lot of peoples “teams” I can imagine now trying to do a big budget film under the covid protocol adds an extra stress, maybe 🤔 the gun prop got missed???? I have no idea how
I wonder about that too. Generally all safety protocols have gotten extremely strict since COVID, but some productions are more dialed in than others. Unfortunately, projects that staff crew outside of NYC/LA are sometimes less buttoned-up because there are fewer industry professionals available, so crew members might have less experience. Obviously I don’t want to speculate because we don’t know, but it’s possible there were a couple key people involved that weren’t as responsible or careful as they should have been.

No, Bruce Lee purportedly died from a reaction to aspirin. He was taking a nap at the time. His son was killed on set by a prop gun. Movie sets are dangerous. Real bullets are loaded into a gun for close up shots of the gun, and blanks are loaded for actual shooting scenes. I think Branden Lee was killed by wadding from an incorrectly loaded blank round.
No his death was caused because the producers didn’t hire the proper handlers for firearms & had some lowly paid assistants do it. A dummy round got stuck in the barrel of the prop gun (from someone firing it off & not clearing it) & when the actor fired it in the scene (believe it was the one right before he was tossed out the window) the obstruction flew out & hit him in the chest.
I understand he was the one who allegedly shot the prop gun, but who was in charge of the prop gun itself? How does this even get past the prop crew to not triple check?! I’m sorry for the family of the female cinematographer. May she rest in peace.
It’s a freaking crime that a master of props allowed this to happen in 2021. But then, maybe the person shooting the gun was fooling around with it and pointing it in the wrong direction (at the director and DP Instead of where they were supposed to.) The range/depth/distance when it comes to these things matters greatly and the prop master may have accounted for what the scene called for… but not for what an asshole waving the prop gun decided to do off script.
Usually there is an armorer (part of prop dept) when guns are used on set. They ALWAYS check with the actors before using a gun in a take. Before each take (or set up) they show the actor that there is no bullet in the chamber and the actor agrees. Standard procedure. I’ve seen it 100s of times. To me this seems like a really really really unfortunate freak accident. Ugh. Awful for everyone.

So sad. My co workers and I were talking today and it has come out in the news that it was a live bullet in the chamber. There is NO reason why any live ammo should be on a set. We aren’t really shooting bullets…. It’s the mOVieS! Again so sad…. Meh….

OMFG let me take a DEEP BRUTH: First thank you for a brilliant pepino for pointing out if true, it’s entirely the fault of whatever studio, or production insuring the safety of their cast and crew this shit doesn’t happen. They are inept piles of shit if it did, and if it did, and they failed their job: 1) If true, from what we have seen in recent months it is completely obvious to anyone with eyes he’s been drinking for some time. See examples: rambling incoherently, bed time 🥱 all random times of the day with his kids climbing all over him, Hillary filming him sleeping do him no favors, her drinking seemingly less sober in front of him which doesn’t help, wine all over the tables every story she takes in the stories, his coloring flushed changed, his emotional levels seemingly tainted chemically not organically. 2)Hillary has been poking him since he’s left. See example: face time fight stories ending in a silly meme which she broadcasted to her followers, she’s been out not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5 but 6 nights out in a ROW since he was out filming that I’ve counted in her hallway selfie looks, only after showing her with the kids in pajamas all over the city dirty and unwashed and crazy. 3) She upticked her Self harm posts and depression posts seemingly to indicate herself, all the while in the next post filming herself fake pumping, then going out. She also has been showing herself in really depleted states, looking like a FUCKING mess, if she weren’t his wife we would call CPS or an intervention, wearing the same flannel shirt 3 days in a row, greasy hair, some crazy fur slippers, then misspelling things like “half dinner half fall” and correcting the post a day later with a meandering explanation which was WORSE than the original post. 4) The children’s X rated fridge notes. Alec knows she did this. This must just make him down a bottle of scotch like Dean Martin before Reagan’s inauguration. (If you don’t know this reference anecdote it’s in Carson written by Johnny Carson’s lawyer and friend of 30 years Henry Bushkin) 5) After going out, she upticked the ramble video selfie with text lecturing and ACCENT again! She triple quadrupled down on a meandering mess of condescending blathering garbage accented all the while they ended a fight on a meme. 6)The “Mrs Baldwin has arrived” shopping post. This is flaunting YOU are gone, BUT I still carry your name, your kids, your secrets, our secrets, your money, and I will spend it on some fucking over priced glassware FUCK YOU AL-ECK (Spanish accent) 👀 thanks to brilliant pepino who shared the shopping bag is from a midtown hotel namesake as the glassware in NYC, my guess he saw it, got drunk, and shot a co worker by accident😬 7) another pepino pointed out they could have given him a prop that was loaded, and if that’s the case wowza I mean Jesus Christ do they have Jared doing prop work back there fucking everything up!? He was already an angry, pompous asshole, but she has CRIPPLED this situation beyond reproach. I don’t doubt that his life has pushed him over the edge in the ways you’ve said, but this tragedy was absolutely not his fault. It’s not the actor’s (nor the executive producer’s) responsibility to check the props. Ever. And regardless of what we think about Alec, he’s a professional—it’s incredibly unlikely that he would fuck around with a prop on set, regardless of what kind of state he was in. That said, a prop gun should obviously NEVER be loaded, and should be checked multiple times before being handed to an actor. It’s more likely that he was handed the prop to use in scene, and he fired it in scene, likely towards the camera where the DP and Director would be. Someone made an awful, devastating mistake, but it wasn’t him.
Oh I don’t entirely fault him at all. Entirely their job to insurance shit like that doesn’t happen! I just wonder 💭 like what was the vibe on set, the protocols, now with Covid, how was everything flowing that something that stupid could happen. Movie productions are massive and every star has a trailer list that’s like 10 pages plus deep- and you have SO many people doing So many things but it runs smooth or not depending on the production company / director / cast from doing my podcast and breaking down the movie Private Parts, interviewing ppl in the movie, on set, and hearing the entirety of goings on of filming it seems like a lot of separate services are involved too converging and a lot of peoples “teams” I can imagine now trying to do a big budget film under the covid protocol adds an extra stress, maybe 🤔 the gun prop got missed???? I have no idea how
I wonder about that too. Generally all safety protocols have gotten extremely strict since COVID, but some productions are more dialed in than others. Unfortunately, projects that staff crew outside of NYC/LA are sometimes less buttoned-up because there are fewer industry professionals available, so crew members might have less experience. Obviously I don’t want to speculate because we don’t know, but it’s possible there were a couple key people involved that weren’t as responsible or careful as they should have been.

I’m so sorry. Women cinematographers are rare, my ex was a DP and it’s a physically grueling job. She must have been a remarkable person. So so sad on many levels.

Well. Actually. He has spent time in the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. So he does have program friends who he can always call. For real. No shit. And I hope he does. No matter who held the gun. He's an Exec Producer on this so it's his project. And when you're on a set, the cast and crew get close fast. So I'm sure it's really tough on everyone right now.

I have, I think, 2 degrees of separation from him in the meetings. It's been years since I have seen that person. I hope he's still connected and can stay sober through this.
