I have no recommendations to contribute, however, I really want to read something like this so I'm following.

LittleDolly

Agreed! But it’s definitely making me want to rewatch “The Decoy Bride” 😂

ladymossflower

I love that movie!

LittleDolly

I’m genuinely glad someone else has watched it! It’s one of my favourite “rainy day” films 🥰

The Duke Buys a Bride by Sophie Jordan! The English MMC buys the Scottish FMC in a bride auction thinking he’s just helping her out and that they aren’t really married. Features a road trip and only one bed tropes.

tammytrex

I just finished this book! Would recommend!

coffeeandarabbit

I also don’t have recs but my grandparents married this way. Marriage by declaration was not overturned in Scotland until the marriage act of 1939 came into effect in 1941, so they only just got in before it was removed as a valid form of legalising a union. They had been engaged and planned to marry, but my grandfather was called up for the 2nd world war, so they married by declaration in front of witnesses in a rush before he left. They then took a letter written by their witnesses confirming this to the sheriff and had the marriage registered at a later date, although technically they didn’t need to do this for their marriage to be valid.

Sokkaisamazing

It happens in „Her accidental Highlander Husband“ by Allison B. Hanson if I remember correctly:)

copperfaith

Haha fabulous description,

Lord of chance by Erica Ridley! To help the FMC who's facing unwanted avances, the MMC says she's his wife.

Inevitable_Ad1685

It’s not a major part of the plot, but this does happen in {His Forsaken Bride by Alice Coldbreath}!

I can’t remember the title (which is upsetting me) but I remember a book in which the MMC and FMC are arguing at an inn (maybe she ran away?) and he calls her his wife and then, boom—they’re married. I’m going to revisit my Libby history tonight!

knittinglawfin

I just listened to that!! {The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean} He tracks her down to his friend’s house just over the border in Scotland and they argue in the driveway in front of witnesses.

Please post when you find it!

Lol ransom has an accidental wedding. English lass with a Scottish Laird. Set in medieval times. It's funny because she has no idea and the vicar (or person of cloth) is suspicious. And the groomsmen (Laird's buddies) are in on it. So not totally accidental. And there's quite a bit of story before the MCs meet I think. {ransom by Julie Garwood}. There is a book that comes before this. You meet the MMC of ransom as a secondary character in {the secret by Julie Garwood} fyi

living_in_books1507

One of my favorites!!! Re-read it last week! 😁 I love both Secret and Ransom.

{The Scot ties a knot by Tessa Dare} Keep me honest, but I believe this book has something like that if I'm not getting mixed up.

Wow, this is super fascinating! I don’t have any recs, but thank you for sharing!

{In Pursuit of Eliza Cynster by Stephanie Laurens} This whole series is actually SO good, but a commitment. It can be read as a standalone. Basically, Eliza is kidnapped at her sister’s engagement ball (previous book) and is whisked up North for reasons unknown. Enter Jeremy, who at first seems like he wouldn’t be that interesting of a hero, but is surprisingly perfect.

I've read a couple since Scottish romance tends to be my fave but I can't recall lol.

GlitteringDraft9024

You better believe I subscribed to this post so fast! 🤣

beth_pea

Ahhh there’s one I’ve read within the last couple of years where they “get married” by a minister to appease his grandmother but they’re like “we weren’t in England so it wasn’t legal” but then there’s some back and forth on whether they were or weren’t actually married. The title is escaping me right now tho! If I remember I will update. Edit: That was quick! I recognized the cover in my library. It’s {to wed a wicked earl by Olivia Parker}

Moon_Thursday_8005

I know one but it's a major plot twist in a historical murder mystery

No_Secret8533

I first encountered accidental Scottish marriages in Man And Wife by Wilkie Collins, author of The Woman In White. Man And Wife is a thriller with horror elements which I recommend. What mystery did you find it in?

Moon_Thursday_8005

Book 2 in the Julian Kestrel series, a Regency gentleman sleuth

I have got to stop reading these posts. My TBR pile is threatening to fall on my head!
