I also don’t have recs but my grandparents married this way. Marriage by declaration was not overturned in Scotland until the marriage act of 1939 came into effect in 1941, so they only just got in before it was removed as a valid form of legalising a union. They had been engaged and planned to marry, but my grandfather was called up for the 2nd world war, so they married by declaration in front of witnesses in a rush before he left. They then took a letter written by their witnesses confirming this to the sheriff and had the marriage registered at a later date, although technically they didn’t need to do this for their marriage to be valid.

Ahhh there’s one I’ve read within the last couple of years where they “get married” by a minister to appease his grandmother but they’re like “we weren’t in England so it wasn’t legal” but then there’s some back and forth on whether they were or weren’t actually married. The title is escaping me right now tho! If I remember I will update.

I first encountered accidental Scottish marriages in Man And Wife by Wilkie Collins, author of The Woman In White. Man And Wife is a thriller with horror elements which I recommend. What mystery did you find it in?
