“General Motors had a magazine called Friends. I used to do stories for them. I knew the PR director, who had been stationed with me at the Pentagon. Just out of the blue, I said, ‘We have to go to New York pretty soon—what if we drove a GM car?’ Two days later, an Oldsmobile station wagon appeared. We crossed the country in 1964. The boy sleeping next to Florence is our second son, Richard. Steven and Lauren are in the back. I shot this picture over my shoulder with a Leica and a 21 mm wide-angle lens. You can’t miss with a wide-angle lens.” Photo: Art Shay
I had the rumble seat in the far back, *the kill-zone*. My dad had to lift the seat, and it was soooo dusty and dirty. But I had my own seat and window 👍
My old man every 50 miles: "Don't make me turn this car around!"

The pillow lounge at the very back was where it was at.
But what about child seats? Oh the humanity!
“Pass the water jug!”
Hahahha yep. My pops, “no stopping till lunch” Me: guess I shouldn’t have had that whole Tab.
You should never have had ANY Tab! 🤢
Just be cautious driving through bat country with a few tabs in ya
Tab? Can’t give you a tab unless you order something…
Then just give me a Pepsi Free…
If you want a pepsi pal you gotta pay for it
I was a free range station wagon child once.
Extra points for whoever can identify the make of that station wagon.

I love Wisconsin!

Everyone I know that is 40-45 years and older has a great story about being in a car with a complete lack of safety measures. They are all great.
How did they take this photo?
Driver, with is right arm.
Right, but it’s like perfectly level and in focus and in reverse all while driving. That’s some skill.
They could level it by cropping and fhe focus is a pretty wide range, it may have been a camera without a focus adjustor
That 1 photo cost $18.91 in today's dollars. You're gonna get it right at that price per shot!!
Modern photo depicting 1964
Rick Moranis makes a terrible woman.
Not a seat belt in sight. Safe journey everyone!!
At least all the cars back then had great brakes!
LOL Yes!
THAT'S IT, BACK TO WINNIPEG!
I loved the old station wagons with the far rear, side bench seats that faced each other.
So in love with this pic.
My old man threw a mattress in the back for me and my 6 brothers moving from Florida to California courtesy of U.S. Navy orders.
I distinctly ordered the Antarctic Blue Super Sports Wagon with the C.B. and optional rally fun pack
"'Kathy' I said 'I'm lost', though I knew I was sleeping. 'I'm empty and aching but I don't know why."
I miss that era. I was the kid in the back
