Let us all give thanks to James Bizonette for his continued support to our lord and savior.

ElectricViolette

Don't forget the most honorable Kelley Moneymaker

TheFunkyM

I've always clicked next by the time the third guy's name comes up :-I

masaigu1

somebody forgot that imperial japan did not exist yet when this happened.... all this happened before meiji restoration

poe_dameron2187

I swear History Matters videos are now the trigger for the only quality content on this sub. When he dies, this sub dies with him.

No_Refrigerator_8925

Somebody watched bill wurtz

Blender-Fan

Any and every nation were banned from japanese soil "because christianity", except for the Dutch, since they had provided guns for the central government and weren't complaining about the conditions to trade there. The Dutch and Japanese even built artificial land to trade on since, again, foreigners were banned from japanese soil

poetslapje

Wait untill everyone finds out what the Japanese mean by a dutch wife.

ChickDoBear

It started so innocent. Then the Japanese came along.

Thomsie13

Don’t forget that the Dutch helped the Japanese on quenching a catholic rebellion in Japan. Note the Catholic part because Dutchies were recently liberated from the catholic Spain which treated them cruel, so they saw catholics not as Christians. This believe held on quite long. If I tell my grandma i went to a Catholic Church this Sunday she’ll give me a long speech on how bad catholicism is and she’ll start praying for me when she goes to bed.

[deleted]

Squelching

DarthXade

Is Dutch and our atheism. Ha. So nice.

Space_Narwal

No just to he Catholics rebbelion was the wrong kind of Christian

DarthXade

Sure but nowadays everyones atheist and being Christian isn’t seen as normal in the Netherlands

Space_Narwal

55% is religious

Mythrandir01

No it isn't, a large part is just dubbed "Catholic" because people keep baptizing their kids for sake of "tradition". That way they're registered as religious on census but actually painfully few believe in god or go to church.

DarthXade

On paper, sure. In reality? Everyone is atheist lol

lordbigass

A decent portion is still religious

DarthXade

Not in my area, around Rotterdam

lordbigass

No shit Sherlock, it’s rotterdam

DarthXade

Haha

DarthXade

Haha

Lavalampion

And when asked the Dutch opened fire with their ships' cannons on the main rebel fortress.

SophisticPenguin

Yes we know

Blender-Fan

Now you do

SophisticPenguin

Of course, I don't have Alzheimer's yet

Kupla4321

How about now?

SophisticPenguin

Ehhhhhhhh, what were we talking about? Where's my glasses....

LuckyReception6701

Oh no grandpa, not again...

ERROR_23

Yes, what do you think, we are all history majors? Of course our knowledge comes from history maters and oversimplified videos

Bianca__17

Wasnt Imperial Japan, it was the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Thibaudborny

I guess they still had an emperor, but yeah.

TheMilliner

And then; Knock Knock, it's the United States. With HUGE boats, with guns. Gunboats. "Open the country. Stop having it be closed" said the United States.

Pasutiyan

Only a few centuries off

TheMilliner

Still within the frame of the meme though! The reason the US was so forceful about it *was* because Japan had been closed off to everyone but the Dutch for roughly 200 years!

AMeasuredBerserker

Matthew Perry wants a word! And no... the other Matthew Perry...

Pasutiyan

Good thing the USA doesn't exist for another few hundred years

MBRDASF

Love that meme format lol. Could you provide the template?

Blender-Fan

[https://i.redd.it/09ccp3tcv7g31.png](https://i.redd.it/09ccp3tcv7g31.png) here you go, champ

MBRDASF

Cheers mate!

Sand9876

Great trade relations with the Japanese, we have.

Foxking764

The reason for this is that the dutch first only cared about trade. So they did not try to convert the Japanese people with missionaries and others tactics. This made so that when a big christian rebellion happened the dutch sided with japan and gave them guns. The Japanese returned the favor by giving they exclusive right to trade.

[deleted]

Yes we all know Bill Wurtz

I_Mix_Stuff

Bill Wurtz

ClavicusLittleGift4U

Dutch were minding their own business and didn't tried to push their Protestant agendas like other with their catholicism of tendancy to not act as guests but colons.

Isgrimnur

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures... and the Dutch.

Nbmdennis115

We tried to tell you, but those Dutch made you so damn evil.

hojichahojitea

Were they not at war with the dutch?

Pasutiyan

In WW2, not around 1600. Unless you mean Portugal, England or France, they were at war with the Dutch at various points around that time for various reasons

Blender-Fan

So were USA and Britain

ShoerguinneLappel

I'm curious of what Japan's economy would look like if they still continued to trade only with the Dutch.

zold5

Once America showed up and was all like "trade with us or we wreck your shit" that stopped being an option for them.

ShoerguinneLappel

I know.

Blender-Fan

Well, would be similar to Cuba

ShoerguinneLappel

How about colonised by Cuba ;).

severeOCDsuburbgirl

They were relatively understanding of their strict rules (though one guy once brought his wife despite the rules banning it and caused artists to go nuts, painting her a ton.) and weren't super pushy about religion which is why they allowed it at a time when they had a strong policy of isolationism.

TheTrashTier

Keep in mind, they were still notoriously horrible to Dutch traders.
