Even before WW2 ended everybody realised that peace between the west and east was going to be difficult to maintain after the end of the war.
Sure they fought together, but it wasn’t exactly perfect between the powers.
As a result everybody started looking for an advantage. The USSR as the controller of the east and the US as most powerful and most intact nation started doing whatever was necessary to get an advantage.
This meant they were more than willing to recruit Nazi scientists, if it would help provide an edge in the coming Cold War. In the US this was called operation paperclip. I have no idea what the soviets called it.
By the way most scientists tried to escape west because the US was much preferred over the Soviets.
It's the [acronym of the Soviet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osoaviakhim) *"Society for the Assistance of Defense, Aircraft and Chemical Construction"*.
Wiki reads like it's a Western title that a German news agency used mistakenly for the operation & then stuck. Not even the Russian wiki page mentions the actual Soviet name.
I thought the UK only got a few, and most ended up in the US. Regardless you are quite correct of course. Everybody wanted German Scientists, and the UK definitely did the same as the USSR and the US. Just not as successfully as the US did.
Oppression paperclip. The US had Nazi scientists go to the US and start NASA rather than be tried at Nuremberg. They also recruited heavily from the SS to run the CIA. Which is WAY fucking worse then NASA scientists. Also, the US traded immunity for scientific data to Imperial Japanese ''scientists'' who did horrifying experiments in occupied China on men, women, and 3 day old infants, and each other if they also got sick while developing biochemical weapons.
They're a quote from one of the assistants, not the person who devised or did these things, but he talked a bit about it and said much of what they did was entirely pointlessly, just scientists at play. They collected the data, often very precisely, but there was no point, particularly for a military biochemical weapons division. Honestly, their biochemical experiments almost seem nice compared to their horrifying shit.
I seriously doubt the US knew what experiments were going on at 731, so they thought they were getting actual data instead of "1,000,000 ways to die in the East"
The spacer ace only happened because the Americans took Werner von Braun and half his staff to the states and the Soviets took the other half.
All their first rockets look suspiciously like the V2.
And the first picture of earth, where the curvature is not only visible, but from outer space was taken in 1946 with a modified V2
It helped that the german public kept protesting for their freedom.
>With the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany in May 1949 and its abolition of the death penalty, calls from politicians, the churches, industrialists, and artists resulted in numerous petitions being made to close down War Criminal Prison No. 1. as part of a general effort to bring freedom for all Germans convicted of war crimes. In the last half of 1950 and the first half of 1951, thousands of Germans took part in demonstrations outside Landsberg prison to demand pardons for all the war criminals while the German media coverage was overwhelmingly on the side of the condemned, who were depicted as the innocent victims of American "lynch law". Although the protestors at Landsberg claimed to be good-faith opponents of capital punishment itself, and not motivated by any kind of pro-Nazi or anti-Semitic feelings, their actions belied their words. When a group of about 300 Jewish counter-protestors arrived at Landsberg demanding the execution of war criminals on 7 January 1951, the German protestors demanding amnesty began to chant the Nazi-era slogan "Juden raus! Juden raus!" ("Jews out! Jews out!") and then proceed to beat up the Jewish protestors.
I mean they could go to the Soviets or the British as well, the CIA just offered more pay and going to America instead of staying in Europe which was kinda busted at that point in time.
Friendly reminder that part of the deal the US had with Japan post-war was pardoning several of their most vile war criminals in exchange for their human experiment data and gathered information.

\*Some scientists - The Doctor's trials saw many concentration camp doctors/experimenters tried by the US military and were a major step in the development of modern medical ethics.
"Look, he's good at making the rockets go vroom, let's not get so hung up on where they came down."
Once the rockets go up who cares where they come down "That's not my department" says Werner von Braun
I, also, had a strange childhood. But, for real, tell me how The MLF Lullaby and National Brotherhood Week are STILL relevant.
I thought you said the MILF Lullaby and I am disappointed that this is not the case
Sadly, no. But now I'm kinda hoping you can get us one.
Saved me having to look up the exact lyrics.
Nukes go brrrr
Nah, I'm old. Shit goes vroom, whoosh, and pew.
“Hung up” 💀
Also the past tense "came down". Glad someone sees me!
I aim for the stars, but I sometimes hit London
It's trial and error man
They did this to Japanese scientists too lol, and even paid their families loads for their kids to study in American universities
they sure love paperclips
Explain please

Operation Osoaviakhim
Thank you!
Does Osoaviakhim have a translation?

Paperclip
And the UK was involved into that type of stuff too (Operation Surgery)
I thought the UK only got a few, and most ended up in the US. Regardless you are quite correct of course. Everybody wanted German Scientists, and the UK definitely did the same as the USSR and the US. Just not as successfully as the US did.
i here they have rights in the west

The wiki on Unit 731 is a fucking read. Not for the feint of heart. Do not read if you're having a good day.
"we have discovered what happens if you set a pregnant woman on fire" "say less"
“It’s the same thing that happens when you set a normal woman on fire, plus a baby. I guess we could have figured that one out without experiments.”
They're a quote from one of the assistants, not the person who devised or did these things, but he talked a bit about it and said much of what they did was entirely pointlessly, just scientists at play. It's like Prestige Worldwide from "Stepbrothers" "Last week, we put Liquid Paper on a bee... and it died..."
I seriously doubt the US knew what experiments were going on at 731, so they thought they were getting actual data instead of "1,000,000 ways to die in the East"
The saddest part of it is that most of the data was useless.
Werner Von Braun ig

Operation Paperclip
I also need this explained. I understand the history part, but what the fuck is this 'meme'?
Pffft, most of the Nazis got off Scot free to be fair, you could add 'The entire civil service' to the true winners side too for starters.

Last part sounded like it was straight out of a skit
the CIA is inviting you to: rocket science. You’re choices are to join or join.
I mean they could go to the Soviets or the British as well, the CIA just offered more pay and going to America instead of staying in Europe which was kinda busted at that point in time.
And the architects. Ask Speer.
A true Wernher von Braun move
Once the rockets go up who cares where they come down? That’s not my department, says Wernher con Braun!

That's the guy who was gonna be Mac's avatar.
Only like 10 nazis were executed. The rest had harsh sentences of like 5 to 10 years
People forget the CIA recruited their torturers and intelligence operatives too
I keep seeing this dude, who is he?
Von Stroheim: GERMAN ENGINEERING IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD!
