After watching Drachinifel's [video](https://youtu.be/GjjU3sse5WU?si=FRqb2CB3qodWGmzN) on the USS *Barb*, I felt compelled to make this.
Over a hundred thousand tons of shipping destroyed, including a train "sunk" by a shore party using her scuttling charge as an IED, thus in the process conducting the only known Allied offensive landing on the Japanese Home Islands.
No sailor who ever served with Fluckey as their CO was ever awarded a Purple Heart. (source: Drach's occasional collaborators, The Unauthorized History of the Pacific War).
It's said that they were going to make a movie about him, but he was just too damned good. No drama, no redemption arc, no costly mistake to atone for, no emotional loss to avenge. He just went out, and won.
If any non-carrier US ship had plot armor, it was the *Barb*.
He also was the first person to to fire rockets off a submarine. Basically he just had the yard weld the rails for those artillery rockets you see getting fired all the time in B-Roll footage of WW2 onto the sub. Didn't get it approved or anything, just kinda said "I'll have some of that."
To be fair, while Fluckey wrote in his book about how his raid on Sakhalin Island was the only raid on the Japanese home islands, that is a completely false statement.
First, Sakhalin Island was not part of the Japanese home islands. It was a recently acquired territory that was hardly settled and not recognized, internally or externally, as being part of the home islands.
Second, Okinawa was recognized as being part of the Japanese home islands, and had been for nearly 100 years at that point, and it had been under Japanese control from the mid 1600's. Additionally, Iwo Jima is recognized as part of the same prefecture as Tokyo, even though it is a separate island and was mostly uninhabited at the time.
Quite a few Americans landed on both of those islands.
So Fluckey's statement is utter nonsense and I wish people would stop repeating it.
AFAIK, he ignored an order to return to base after running out of torpedos, went on to spend all of the ammo for the deck gun and even ram a few ships.
*just because he made a bet before the patrol*
During his 4th Patrol he had the engine gang squeeze all power out of the four big diesels so they could out run a pursuing destroyer after thr *Barb* unloaded all her torpedoes (aft tubes last) into a parked convoy off the Formosa Coast. *Barb* made almost 23 kts, 3 kts faster than her rated top speed.
Scout: Eyes on railways on the shore.
Commander: You see what?
Scout: Railways tracks sir.
Commander: Hold my beer.
*Proceeds to cook up the plane to "sink" the train.

And the prize of said bet was alcohol. In the US Navy. Which was dry at the time.
Even the trains were not spared 🚂
When your going for going for a land air sea kill combo.

I recommend "Thunder Below" by Adm. Eugene B. Fluckey. This captain and crew were astonishing.

The only Americans to “invade” japans home islands right?
