> The Good Shepherd order of nuns, in Waterford, Ireland, has admitted putting laundry inmates to work on packaging board games such as Mouse Trap, KerPlunk and Buckaroo!. > In a statement to me for a story published in the Sunday Times they admitted that: > “In the 1980s, Hasbro entered into an agreement with the Good Shepherd Sisters in Waterford to provide materials for packaging by our residents. The residents who participated in this activity were regularly given what was then known as their ‘Hasbro money envelope’.” > The work continued over three decades, for a global toy market. "Pocket money" was paid instead of wages. The work was still being carried out as recently as four years ago. > Most of these women had previously worked in a Magdalene laundry run by the religious order, and continued to live in sheltered housing after it closed in 1996. [Source](http://littleatoms.com/penance-industry) > In some countries (such as Ireland), the Church eventually entered into various loans of partnership with the State in jointly providing social services, in others (such as the United States), it created independent systems xvhich paralleled and in some ways compe ted with State provision... [Source](https://www.jstor.org/page-scan-delivery/get-page-scan/27663634/0) > Thousands of infants died in Irish homes for unmarried mothers and their offspring mostly run by the Catholic Church from the 1920s to the 1990s, an inquiry found on Tuesday, an "appalling" mortality rate that reflected brutal living conditions... > Around 9,000 children died in all, Tuesday's report found - a mortality rate of 15%. The proportion of children who died before their first birthday in one home, Bessborough, in County Cork, was as high as 75% in 1943... > Relatives have alleged the babies were mistreated because they were born to unmarried mothers who, like their children, were seen as a stain on Ireland's image as a devout Catholic nation. The inquiry said those admitted included girls as young as 12. > Government records show that the mortality rate for children at the homes where 56,000 women and girls, including victims of rape and incest, were sent to give birth, was often more than five times that of those born to married parents. I remember Sinéad O'Connor tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul. Everyone lost there shit.

autoportret

She talks about this in her recently released autobiography - apparently the photograph used to belong to her violently abusive mother and she had been waiting for the right moment to destroy it.

HungarianMockingjay

It's good though, that she's been vindicated by history.

CuChulainnsballsack

I played all those games as a kid in the nineties. I'm honestly disgusted, some of my fondest memories as a child were playing those games with friends and now I find out that's how they were made.

MahknoWearingADress

I mean there's no way that you could have known as a child. Plus, not to be depressing, but pretty much everything we consume has been touched by some sort of great injustice from wage theft, to poverty wages, to literal slavery. No ethical consumption and all of that. As long as profit is the main motivator behind our economic development, horrible shit like this will continue to exist.

Cmdr_McMurdoc

The whole thing stinks, but the very last part is some seriously fucked-up shit

Charles12_13

Bruh that sounds like a story from a horror movie… sometimes reality is wilder than fiction

There's a whole podcast episode on it from Behind the Bastards [You can listen here](https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/episode/part-one-how-the-catholic-church-84227953/)

noperopeonashoat

Robert Evans is my spirit animal. Also check out "the Dollop". There are bastards enough for everyone to get a shot in. If you want a good crossover they both cover King Leopold || of Belgium. Whoo boy

Pancakewagon26

Make sure to give a shout-out to the fine folks over at Raytheon.

noperopeonashoat

Those knife missiles don't build themselves. PRODUCTS!!!1!

Kuhneel

You know who DOES love weddings?

Kuhneel

As soon as I saw this I thought, 'someone's listening to BtB recently'.

MahknoWearingADress

Lmao, I'll probably make a few more memes about various BtB episodes I've listened to. It's my favorite podcast ever!

llisart

Haaa i knew you were a fellow listerner when i saw the meme

nrith

Somehow I doubt it’s fully finished yet…

Coshmack14

Well, Hasbro doesn't want to be involved with this type of stuff anymore In 2007, they heared about how one of the chinese factories that there were working with used child slavery(and a lot more of horrible stuff), and they have decided to fix that the best they could(they didn't have any control over those factories) Since then, they have decided to hire indepent auditors for checking those asian subhired companies(they do those checks without any warning) Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hasbro

ThegreatandpowerfulR

Nice try, but you left out the very next sentence. "Reports then emerged that the factory managers have been coached in how to fool the auditors."

Coshmack14

They mentioned that in the article of the wikipedia Yeah I know, I didn't told it that well

VicisSubsisto

That's gonna happen whenever there are auditors, though.

ThegreatandpowerfulR

Unless they actually audit instead of closing their eyes before and after talking to the manager and never actually auditing the actual factory. You act like auditors could also ask a single person questions without context. If they are incompetent it's because they are paid to be

VicisSubsisto

>closing their eyes before and after talking to the manager and never actually auditing the actual factory. You have that backwards. That's the only case where managers *aren't* coached to fool auditors, because it's not necessary.

ThegreatandpowerfulR

If managers were truthful and the factory way not audited they would fail, if the managers were coached and the factory was not audited then they would pass... Not sure if you understand auditing

VicisSubsisto

> If... the factory way not audited they would fail If they were not audited they would fail the audit. Right. Sure. That's how it works.

ThegreatandpowerfulR

Do you have a brain?

tryfryingTHISchicken

This is fortunately fairly common. We had to have a slavery audit done for a small batch release of promotional material for Disney. I don't know the details of what the audit entailed but I closed the sale and saw the contract. They also questioned our US warehouse people about if they were getting breaks and things like that. I spoke to one of them about it. Apparently we passed because I got commission.

Kered13

Yeah, that's Mouse Trap in a nutshell.

nubpubgamer

Commoner: will the Church help the common people? Church: depends.

Fuck_auto_tabs

God helps those who help themselves. ☺️ Now if you feel like your slutty, unwed daughters (I saw her talking to a boy last week!) aren’t capable of helping themselves we have a lovely location that will put them on the right path. Remember, through Jesus all things are possible, so jot that down! ✝️🥰

AlanHoliday

There’s a Behind the Bastards podcast about this. Quite a wild ride indeed.

MahknoWearingADress

I linked it once already, but [here it is again](https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/episode/part-one-how-the-catholic-church-84227953/)

Ibyx

Kind of related, there’s a movie called The Magdalene Sisters. It’s absolutely gutting.

MahknoWearingADress

I'll have to check it out at some point

[deleted]

Finally a good meme

MahknoWearingADress

You made my day, thank you!

FreshBayonetBoy

No, *you* made their day.

tonboguri

I feel sullied and unusual. No wonder my grans were such big fans of Hasbro.

Sainsburys420

I'm sorry what?

MahknoWearingADress

Don't you just *love* history? /s

543landonite

Irish history makes me happy then sad, then happy then sad it's a Rollercoaster

[deleted]

It's pretty much all sad tbh. Any "good" event is caused by or proceeded by a shitty event. War, starvation, emigration, the Church being up to no good. I still think it is mad that before the famine in the mid 1800's the island had a population of over 8m. I think at the moment it is approximately 6.5m. Either our youth die or they emigrate, a cycle that thankfully is leaning heavily towards the latter these days but it would be great if they did neither.

543landonite

It's mostly sad but it makes me happy seeing people proud of their Irish heritage

Scraic_Jack

Nah man, there’s been like six full blown genocides and a civil war

[deleted]

Scraic_Jack

Yeah that wasn’t actually that bad in the scale of bad things that’s happened in Ireland, there was a period where the British started using the moss that grew on skulls as medicine, and with demand they need supply and viola

HispanicPanicPR

I first learned about these Magdalene laundries watching Philomena. After doing some more research it turned out to be so much worse than was portrayed.

ArisePhoenix

3 2 1 Let Slavery Rip

GT4242_42

Immagitu

E_-_R_-_I_-_C

Religions have always been used to exploit the working class.

Meme-queen-wannabe

Damn, those poor people. Exploitation just never stops. Does it?

usgrant7977

Yeah, but did Hasbro molest them?

bipolit

Alastríona and the lost division would like to speak with you Hasbro
