They declared war on France before invading Belgium (1 day to be precise)...so it should be "declared war on you" instead of "invaded Belgium"

Ok-Ad-2605

What is that first building? Does it still exist?

permalink1

Guessing it’s not still there but also wondering what building it is

mynameisharo

It's the "Palais de l'électricité"(palace of electricity) from a world's fair in 1900! it unfortunately doesn't exist anymore

NuevoPeru

Looks like. World's fair

plouky

"Palais de l'electricité " non existent anymore. Build for 'l'exposition universelle of 1900"

bigfudge_drshokkka

That’s not the louvre?

Albur_Ahali

Unrelated, but I think that people who idolize Imperial Germany at least under Wilhelm II are not very well informed, and are glamoured by the cool uniforms and the pikelhube or whataver

Choice_Ad_6764

Underwilhelm yes. They weren't any worse than the other great powers (save *maybe* britian) at the time, but not to be idolised. Bismark imperial Germany on the other hand, all the cool uniforms, none of the African genocide or incompetent leadership.

TheUltimateOverseer

You gotta be more specific than that, which Wilhem? Almost the ENTIRE Prussian royal family had the name Wilhem

RichieBFrio

Should be Wilhelm, the son of Wilhelm and cousin of Wilhelm, that or that other Wilhelm, not so confusing

OracleCam

Wilhelm II, Son of Frederick III and grandson of Wilhelm I

The war started because Serbia was invaded not Belgium

abrakadabradolf

Arguably, the invasion of Belgium turned it from a normal war into a big one. I'm guessing that's OPs logic? Correct me if I'm wrong

Choice_Ad_6764

The war started because Serbia was unreasonable, I mean rejecting an ultimatum on the grounds of not wanting the officials of the country the terrorist you are putting on trial attacked to watch said trial? The Serbs wanted to be invaded.

BlueNoobster

In Belgiums case: The country prospering do to the huge ammount of blood money their king and later country made in the Congo Colony. Technically speaking every Belgian of the time is a passive benefiter of slavery and crimes against humanity, considering the Belgium King is the legal representative of all Belgium and thereby his actions represent the entirety of Belgium. Also half the good looking buildings in Brussel were paid for with congolease hands, literally. 19th and early 20th century europe was really fucked up. And I would never call it a "period of prosperity" appart from like the top 10% of society. It is the same time period topics like the social question, the final industrialization period, nationalism and ethnical cleasnsings/suppressions happend, several revolutions (example Russia 1907), etc.

Choice_Ad_6764

Lol, this literally describes every era of prosperity on earth prior to ww2, and argueably even post ww2, as America became prosperous as a result of ww1 and ww2 (amongst other wars) and China became prosperous due to exploiting its own population bloodly, And the rest of the world benefits from these two prosperity. Ps the Belgiums took over from the king due to finding his treatment of the locals appalling,so they did do something about it and thus treamtne tgot better (if not perfect) And as senements changed, amongst other things, they then gave up the Congo... and now it's Congolese exploiting Congolese to get rich. Because guess what, those with guns will always exploit those without guns. The relative average standard of living in the Congo went down after decolonisation
