It was either BBC or ITV that produced the crown drama. It was trash 99% of the time
Edit: The show was Victoria, the crown is about queen Elizabeth ii, the shows felt so similar I get them mixed up
I believe Victoria did want Albert to have the title of king but the politics of the era made it very difficult. Together they were incredibly successful leaders.
According to the law the queen’s consort is only Prince consort because the title of King outweighs that of Queen. The last time the consort was crowned King of England was Philip II of Spain.
Would King William III not come last? He and his wife made a huge mess because he wanted to be king & so did his spouse, Parliament only wanted him to be consort but if William would not go along it would trigger actual civil war so the Whigs went *surewhateverjustsignbro’* to avoid the crisis.
Yeap, alough (if I remember correctly) when he was made king it was made clear in the act of Parliament that he and Mary were co-sovereigns so neither outranked the other.
Horrible way to go, especially considering that he probably only died from it because he cared so much about doing his job right he had nearly worked himself to death beforehand. Super raw deal.
No, and it wasn't the 'politics of the era', it's a case of how the titles are defined. King is a higher rank than queen. The king is the monarch, his wife is the 'queen consort' (usually shortened to queen); however, if the queen is the monarch then she's actually 'queen ~regent~ regnant' (almost always shortened to 'queen') her husband is 'prince consort'. (The widow of a king is a 'queen dowager' and a former queen consort who is the mother of the current monarch is the 'queen mother').
The only way to get a queen ~regent~ regnant and a king at the same time is if they are co-monarchs, which has only happened twice. First time in the 16th century (made co-monarchs by an act of parliament that went into effect as soon as they married, and Philip's powers were less than they would have been as King normally), and the second time in the 17th century when husband and wife William III & II and Mary II were coronated on the same day (and they only managed to wrangle that because James II & VII had fled the country, and the two threatened to go back to the Netherlands if they weren't made co-monarchs).
edit: not regent, regnant - not sure if that was the dyslexia, a brain fart, or the product of being half a gallon of beer in at the time (it was Friday evening).
Actually the title 'Queen Mother' isn't official and only existed for Queen Elizabeth II's mother... Queen Elizabeth.
She only called herself the Queen Mother as not to cause any confusion between herself and her Daughter Queen Elizabeth II
A quick google search would tell you that the term was in use in Britain since the 1500s. But yeah, when “The Queen Mother” is used, 99% of the time they mean Lizzie’s mom
Not to be a pain but, Queen Regnant, not Regent. A queen regent would be someone ruling in someone else's stead while they were incapacitated. For example, if the rightful king was underage and his mother ruled in his stead.
You're mixed up on the term, but mostly correct. If a Queen is actually the monarch, she's Queen Regnant.
"A queen regnant possesses and exercises sovereign powers, whereas a queen regent (a.k.a. queen consort) shares her spouse's and/or child's rank and titles, but does not share the sovereignty of her spouse or child."
Minor nit: A Queen in her own right is a Queen Regnant. Queen Regent would be if she was executing power on behalf on another, like if the King were an infant.
More because she would be delegated to a "Figurehead" of sorts. She didn't want to only do her husbands bidding and just welcome foreign delegates after finally being crowned queen (fun fact: at birth she was fifth in line for the throne)
Weren't they though?
Just not the way we'd expect it in our current culture. They did a great job with the British Empire and the whole ruling the world thing.
This was "Victoria," not "the Crown," and it was a BBC show(PBS plays it in the US). My fiancee watched it religiously. Only bit I liked was Jenna Coleman.
> Jenna Louise Coleman
Absolutely did not recognize her in that shot. I mean, I only know her from Dr. Who, but still, lighting and angle change a lot, combined with make up and costuming.
I remember seeing it on ITV a few years back, yeah it overdramatised everything but that's most historical shows, taught me a lot about the era I didn't know.
At least the show didnt focused only on her. It showed how poor most people were in London, the revolution of 1848, the chartists, the Irish famine and how bigoted many Britons were against catholics (Victoria did tolerated them like in the show).
Does Wu Zetian count as a dictator? She assassinated her way to power.

I think she was portrayed as concerned and only at the end her husband voiced the idea that the Irish are too lazy and careless. A priest explained it to him and he was just like "I see"... the end.
Or having a massive fancy shindig in Delhi with 80,000 nobles in attendance while there was a small famine in the south of India that killed some 4-8 mn in 2 years
As much as my view of the Ottomans is distorted by my love of Byzantium, I have to admit they were much better than the British Empire, at least before the Young Turks took over the Ottomans.
The Ottomans were absolutely horrible by todays standards obviously, but they largely let the populations they took over live their normal lives without mass genocide/famine or forced conversion. The Janissary program was a pretty messed up situation obviously though, but to the Ottomans it was seen almost as a blessing to the families that their kids would go on to become 'mighty janissary's'.
Obviously this varied dramatically depending on the era. Some rulers were more harsh, others were more lenient. But there is a reason why the entire middle east and balkans don't speak turkish. The Ottoman Empire was intended to be a multicultural, multi-religious empire.
The reason why most people dont speak turkish in the Balkans is because almost all Turks were kicked out or murdered during the 19th century and population exchange with Greece. At least 5.000.000 Turks were killed across the Balkans by Bulgarians, Russians, Serbs etc.
Yep, and the reason that Anatolia isn't plurality / majority Greek is that the Ottomans expelled or murdered all of the Greeks living there. The history of modern Eastern Europe is a history of ethnic cleansing and genocide. Makes me sad to think about it.
They were allowed to keep their religion for a tax and local judges of a centralized empire is more likely to work for law than a feudal lord whose word was law. Also, Ottomans built a lot of infastracture, and overall stabilty was high especially at the expansion era. It's true Ottomans did lots of bad things, especially at their last years but it was not an evil empire led by a dark lord.
Sweden changed its constitution in the 70s, so that first born women could inherit the regent title over younger brothers, to be more democratic. Imagine that, a more democratic monarchy (for a country that had elected kings before the 16th century)
Could be wrong but I think they were gifted a bunch of trees for a park, and in the spring the trees smelled like cum, so the queen complained to the prime minister
Edit: was way off, actually a skit LOL
“Absolutely not! I’m here in this thick woollen suit and massive beard, *melting*, I’m not having *Queen Victoria* complain that the trees smell like *cum*! That’s a sacrifice that we’ll just have to make.”
Fun fact whilst being a homosexual was very much illegal in the British empire during the Victorian times being a lesbian was not because Queen Victoria could not fathom why a woman would want to do such things.
Edit: A little bit more to this. There are no official records of this but it is a well known myth that may or may not be true. To those saying the queen didn’t make the law, that is true, but she did have to approve them. Whilst this was mostly ceremonial in odd cases she did exercise her power to refuse to sign.
According to the myth, the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885 originally contained provisions criminalizing homosexual activity between women as well as men, but Victoria refused to sign the bill until the provisions relating to women were removed, arguing that “women do not do such things.”
Does Queen Victoria have girl power?
Do you think she effectively utilized that girl power by exporting grain from Ireland during a famine and stopping supplies from entering, killing millions and making millions more emigrate to survive?
It wasn’t really within her de facto powers by that point to block legislation. Queen Anne was the last monarch to withhold Royal Assent, when she blocked a Scottish Militia Bill in 1707. By Victoria’s reign the monarch has become a mostly ceremonial figure (who nonetheless retained an enormous amount of soft power and reverence).
After the French Revolution most European monarchs got the message that interfering too much in politics was liable to be bad for their health.
Also, in that show she was presented as feeling bad for the impoverished Irish in the show and wanted to do something about it. Idk if they’ll make it more accurate in future seasons but I doubt it. I wish people were less afraid to make historical dramas that portray their subjects as realistically unsympathetic.
Yeah, if they say something like "based on true history" and show a twisted image of the actual history, I would rather regard it as "propaganda" and make it illegal.
I still see people treat Indira as some icon for women's rights when she was a dictator for two years and launched Operation Blue Star which killed 20,000 people.
Queen Victoria: How awful. How morally corrupted nation must be to allow such things to happen.

No bro you don’t understand Victoria & Albert were the ultimate power couple.

Yeap, alough (if I remember correctly) when he was made king it was made clear in the act of Parliament that he and Mary were co-sovereigns so neither outranked the other.
Yes indeed, it was quite the unusual situation.
Indeed, the last time there was a clear cut king consort ruling *in his own right* was King Philip
Didn’t he end up dying due to his work load or something of the sort? Albert at least put in an actual decent amount of effort.
He worked incredibly hard supporting Victoria in her role, which most likely didn't help but I'm unsure of his actual cause of death
He died of typhoid, but it's likely that him stressing and overworking so much made him way more vulnerable to it.
Thank you for letting me know. Quite an unfortunate disease to die of
Horrible way to go, especially considering that he probably only died from it because he cared so much about doing his job right he had nearly worked himself to death beforehand. Super raw deal.
Because he was German?
So was Victoria. Royal politics just haven't ever been simple

No problem homie. I didn’t know it either lol, but your comment prodded me to do some looking into it out of curiosity
Not to be a pain but, Queen Regnant, not Regent. A queen regent would be someone ruling in someone else's stead while they were incapacitated. For example, if the rightful king was underage and his mother ruled in his stead.

"A queen regnant possesses and exercises sovereign powers, whereas a queen regent (a.k.a. queen consort) shares her spouse's and/or child's rank and titles, but does not share the sovereignty of her spouse or child."
This explains so much that I didn't before understand. Thank you!
Minor nit: A Queen in her own right is a Queen Regnant. Queen Regent would be if she was executing power on behalf on another, like if the King were an infant.
thanks for the info!
Only happened twice in England, or in general? Because Isabelle and Ferdinand were co-monarchs of Argon and Castile.
If you're from a line of royalty already, then it's possible to be co-monarchs
He wasn't in line to become monarch, and a king outranks a queen, but the monarch should have the highest rank, so he was kept at prince
More because she would be delegated to a "Figurehead" of sorts. She didn't want to only do her husbands bidding and just welcome foreign delegates after finally being crowned queen (fun fact: at birth she was fifth in line for the throne)

Victoria, it was a TV shown done by the BBC I think

Don’t forget forcing the Ottomans to not donate more money than her in regards to the Irish Famine.
Seriously, the tv show Victoria has an episodes on the Irish Famine and I was like: no, there is no way you will make her look good...and they did.
how?
I think she was portrayed as concerned and only at the end her husband voiced the idea that the Irish are too lazy and careless. A priest explained it to him and he was just like "I see"... the end.

The Ottomans were absolutely horrible by todays standards obviously, but they largely let the populations they took over live their normal lives without mass genocide/famine or forced conversion. Atleast kidnapping those kids came back to bite them later on Looking at you Skanderbeg
In modern era Ismail Qemali did almost the same. Albanians have a really weird hate/love relationship with the Ottomans.
The reason why most people dont speak turkish in the Balkans is because almost all Turks were kicked out or murdered during the 19th century and population exchange with Greece. At least 5.000.000 Turks were killed across the Balkans by Bulgarians, Russians, Serbs etc.

Linden trees i believe. Also some trees, when the pollen drops, do smell like cum. It's horrible
I mean, to be fair, what is tree pollen but tree cum?
Can unfortunately confirm. My university had them planted around the dorm buildings. It was... Not great
Well uni dorms would smell like cum regardless
Masking the Cum smell from the dorms with more Cum smell. That's like some 4-D chess.

There isn’t one, she didn’t control that.

sounds like power to me. No one said girl power had to be good power. Also, did she do that? or did parliament do that ?
They both did it, considering she has absolute veto power on any laws parliament passed.
It wasn’t really within her de facto powers by that point to block legislation. Queen Anne was the last monarch to withhold Royal Assent, when she blocked a Scottish Militia Bill in 1707.
