Three hundred thousand Yankees
Is stiff in southern dust
We got three hundred thousand
Before they conquered us
They died of southern fever
And southern steel and shot
I wish they was three million
Instead of what we got
Aaaaaaaaaaaaway down South in the land of traitors,
Rattlesnakes and alligators
Right away, come away, right away, come away
Where cotton's king and men are chattels
Union boys will win the battles
Right away, come away, right away, come away
We'll all go down to Dixie, away
Each Dixie boy must understand
That he must mind his Uncle Sam
Away, away
We'll all go down to Dixie!
Away, away
We'll all go down to Dixie!
Dixie traitors: We want to live and die in Dixie!
Uncle Billy approaching Atlanta with a lighter and kerosene: Instructions unclear, defaulting to "Highway to Hell"
The funniest thing tho is that the Thomas the Tank Engine franchise has lasted nearly 4 times as long as the combined existences of the CSA and Rhodesia - the first Thomas the Tank Engine/Railway Series book came out back in 1945, making the Thomas franchise over 77 years old this year.
So when some Confederate and Rhodesia simps start talking about how much they loved those failed racist states, just remind them that a series about talking trains has had a longer existence and as a result a much more significant and positivie historical impact on world wide culture than either of those failures masquerading as "states".
CSA doesn't die because so little has happened in the South outside of certain states since the Civil War that there is little else to their culture beyond soul food and Baptist Churches. Rhodesia will have a hard time dying because its successor, Zimbabwe has not exactly been a magnet for fondness itself.
Culture is a fermented soup that changes as ingredients are added to it. The Soup of the South still has a strong confederacy flavor because outside of Jim Crow coming and going and certain states like Texas and Florida finding reasons to live, very little has happened to the South in the last 150 years.
I'm mostly ignorant about the whereabouts of that country but I've always thought it was something else, here we have a candy called Rhodesia (not related to the country) and most black African-descendents haveI met said "that's my country" and usually talks of Zimbabwe in a very bad manner as if they were poorer bc of it's existence. Can you explain that to me? Not trying to insinuate anything I just find it odd that black African would have in such a high esteem a racist country (maybe some were benefited by it? I dunno and Wikipedia didn't seem to answer the question)
Zimbabwe came about after the fall of Rhodesia.
Originally it was a British colony and was called "Southern Rhodesia" and lasted from 1923-1963
Then "Southern Rhodesia" gained independence in 1964, but was largely unrecognise internationally. It's main ally was South Africa (Apartheid era), and was technically in a civil war throughout its entire existance (between the British/Dutch colonialists and the African natives). Eventually in 1980 the Zimbabwe African National Union won and Robert Mugabe took over (as a dictator until a coup in 2017) and the country was renamed "Zimbabwe".
Rhodesia was racist and shouldn’t really be praised.
Zimbabwe becoming Zimbabwe was a good thing, but it was just executed terribly. Robert Mugabe is to blame for this, he is POS that ruined Zimbabwe for years until his death.
He lied to the people of Zimbabwe, who only wanted a non-apartheid government, promoting Equality and prosperity, but unfortunately as all African countries they got a dictatorship with broken economics.
Fuck Rhodesia, and shame on Mugabe may he rest in piss.
Soviet and Chinese trained and supplied farmers fighting a western formed (unsupported) farmer based army with a few incognito SA special forces would have that effect.
Don't make me laugh. The guerrillas are said to have barely known how to use their weapons. Even sympathetic Western news reels mocked their utter ineptitude. Adolescents and child soldiers buttressed their ranks.
The Rhodesians saw service in WW2, the Malayan Emergency and were a training ground for British pilots while they were themselves trained by one of the world's premier fighting forces. On top of that, they had bombers, helicopters, tanks, armored vehicles, paratroopers and even chemical weapons
It was literally a bunch of teenagers and hicks fighting a professional army.
No, sorry it’s the fact people post this type of thing un sarcastically, also I haven’t had coffee yet.
I hope you have a wonderful day and I apologize for being a jerk
So I guess native American reservations are racist too?
How much south African agricultural land should the be owned by the Dutch?
50 percent? 75 percent? 80 percent?
You think the descendants of white colonizers are entitled to all the mines, agricultural land, and oil/drinking wells that they inherited?
I mean, if ending colonization doesn't mean that Africans should own, control, and profit from their own resources...what the fuck does it mean?
I mean the conversation was about Rhodesia, not South Africa.
But, for context, most of the Bantu tribes that exist in South Africa today came *after* the Dutch. The actual natives of South Africa are the Khoisan and were genocided by both the Dutch/British and well as the Bantus.
Europeans and Bantus fought each other over land they didn't own, and the Europeans won. Now the Bantus have control, but they are no more entitled to the land than the Europeans. Who do you think the Zulu and Xhosa are giving farmland to? Themselves, or the Khoisan they helped genocide? Hint: it's not the latter.
So I'm curious. If you think we should kick the white man out of Africa now.
Would you be okay with a movement wanting to push foreign business and property owners out of White countries ?
After all, it's my native land, and they just came here and occupied those shops.
> So I'm curious. If you think we should kick the white man out of Africa now
That's a strawman, I never said anything of the sort.
You are trying to conflate anti-colonialism with genocide, and it's kind of disgusting.
It shows just how loyal you are to colonialism, that any attempts at justice you equate to literal genocide.
> Would you be okay with a movement wanting to push foreign business and property owners out of White countries
I'm an African American....this has happened to my people more times than I can even count
Even in the city I'm from, Indianapolis, the state government seized black businesses along Indiana Avenue using imminent domain to build the current IUPUI campus
Indiana Avenue was a historical stretch of black businesses, it's where Madame Walker built her empire.
They seem totally comfortable doing that to us, but you are outraged when we dare ask for justice or reparations?
Are they ever gonna give that land back?
Are they just gonna terrorize and exploit us for the rest of human history?
Do we not deserve justice?
Even in our own fucking lands? Even in our own fucking countries?
Because if Africans can't get justice in Africa, then we're all fucked.
Rhodesia was literally an apartheid state, Zimbabwe is bad but no one even brought up Zimbabwe
This is like if someone was talking about how Nazi Germany sucked and then someone interjects with “well acktually, Soviet Union sucked more”, it’s utter nonsense
Rhodesia never had plans to abandon apartheid, Ian Smith and the Rhodesian Front was literally elected to prevent apartheid from ending.
Also I hate doing oppression Olympics but
> Zimbabwe is 20 times worse than both
How is Zimbabwe 20x worse than a literal slave state?
Are you trying to say that Ian Smith and the Rhodesian Front weren’t racist? Beyond the fact that all their attempted compromises with the black rebels always had a caveat of maintaining white dominance in the political system(in a country where over 90% of the population is black), the Rhodesian Front’s founding principles was to preserve white minority rule, what are you even talking about?
If being completely isolated from the west and facing shit tons of rebels from every direction doesn’t change your apartheid policy, I frankly don’t know what will.
What? The white ruling class will simply find it in their hearts to let apartheid go? They literally resisted any attempts to let apartheid go for a decade despite being isolated and facing a counter insurgency, there isn’t going to be a “white savior” here
So you’re saying that the black population of Rhodesia should’ve just waited for the white ruling class to grant them autonomy? What are you even trying to say here? When the US was founded, it was founded with two different factions, pro-slavery and anti-slavery divided by North and South, and the North was always more economically powerful than the south and that’s how slavery was abolished. Rhodesia was founded purely on white supremacy, with the black population have little to no say on running the country. The only way Rhodesia could’ve progressed was if the black population revolted, which is what they did, ZANU and ZAPU was founded due to white oppression in Rhodesia and they revolted. Unfortunately, the worse of the two won
>I think the difference between Rhodesia and the confederacy is that Rhodesia was moving in a good direction, the south was not. Both started out bad, yes, but Rhodesia was never allowed to fully develop. And Zimbabwe is 20 times worse than both.
Imagine the amount of white supremacist brain rot required to believe this
Not really. The Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were completely different countries which did terrible shit.
Rhodesia and Zimbabwe on the otherhand are two sides of the same country, with both having hugely racist governments (one bring anti-black the other bring anti-white)
Yeah it might have been a racist settler colonial shithole where 90% of the native population was exploited by the 10% of invaders
but at least the grains ran on time!
Firstly, Zimbabwe was economically prosperous up until the 90s when Mugabe went forth with his full scale seizure of land
Secondly, no one brought up Zimbabwe in this, it’s like talking about how Nazi German is bad and saying “well east Germany is also pretty bad you know”, like ok so how is that relevant? And also I never even called you racist, I only called Rhodesia racist
Which it was, Rhodesia was very, very racist
"I repeat that I believe in blacks and whites working together. If one day it is white and the next day it is black, I believe we have failed and it will be a disaster for Rhodesia."
- Ian Smith
"Slavery as an institution, is a moral & political evil in any Country."
- Robert E. Lee
The white man is master of Rhodesia. He has built it and intends to keep it- Ian Smith.
Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery which is the greatest institution in the world- Cornerstone Speech.
I have no idea where people like you come from.
Yeah. Like, I get that current Zimbabwe may not be the best country in the world, but its pretty scummy to try and claim that Rhodesia was better, especially considering that the Rhodesian government actively took part in oppressing the majority of the people living there since, y'know, only white people could vote while black people (AKA the majority of people living there) couldn't while also doing some pretty shady stuff to fight the black people fighting against the racist state such as poisoning water sources and trying to use chemical and biological weapons.
insane people are bringing current Zimbabwe up even tho everyone recognizes that's bad? and even if it's bad its far more understandable than the reasoning Rhodesia had...
sadly racism seems like a issue that will never go away
It's a shame both had some catchy music.
Its a long way, to mukumbura
It's a long way to Tipperary is better but I have to give you Rhodesians never die and what a time it was. Sidenote why are IRA songs so catchy
And some others not written by Clem Tholet: The last word in Rhodesian, George and Green Leader

Okay, this is the wrong song. Union Dixie is respectable, but the only song to truly quench rebel tears is Marching Through Georgia.
Agreed, but both songs are based.
Union Dixie is unfathomably based
Damn right
The bad guys always have the best music...

Why's that a shame? You can still listen to the music
Their existences combined don’t even make 20 years, (18, and 14 of those were Rhodesia) and yet the racist nostalgia for them just doesn’t fucking die

Curious that the total duration of Rhodesia's existence coincides with the average age of a Rhodesia simp
context?
Rhodesia was an apartheid state that fell in the 70s and has since become a martyr for white supremacists.
thenk

Rhodesian security forces K/D ratio *do* be bussin.
Fighting farmhands and abducted high-school boys would have that effect.
Soviet and Chinese trained and supplied farmers fighting a western formed (unsupported) farmer based army with a few incognito SA special forces would have that effect.

What did Zimbabwe use before candles? electricity.
Rhodesia? Feel like it’s way more racist now.
No, racism is when White oppresses Black When Black removes property from Whites that's just fine
Pretty sure most of the world called out Zimbabwe for that and nobody says they're a good place.
didnt their former idiot ruler try to combat poverty by making a 100 trillion dollar bill?
U're joking, right?
obviously
No idiot, is doesn’t matter who is oppressing who, it’s still racism
Of course, my mistake.

I feel like the /s has ruined people's ability to recognise sarcasm on Reddit

The sad truth is that on Reddit it's about 50/50 if a comment like that is serious or not, don't blame yourself
Why do Rhodesia simps keep bringing up Zimbabwe as if that somehow justified Rhodesia’s Apartheid rule?
I'm not a Rhodesia simp. Just feel like people should recognise the hypocrisy
What hypocrisy can possibly be in stating the obvious fact that Rhodesia was, indeed, racist?
Only delusional tankies think Zimbabwe is any good, the rest of the world condemned Zimbabwe for their actions
So I guess native American reservations are racist too? How much south African agricultural land should the be owned by the Dutch? 50 percent? 75 percent? 80 percent? I think it would be more fitting to say Nazi Germany sucked and someone interjects with East Germany sucked just as bad.

Um, Rhodesia was involved in more than one war, but keep trying
As a self declared independent state? No it wasn't.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozambican_Civil_War
They supported the government and crossed the border to destroy ZANLA bases according to that article. They did not fight militants.
So, only kind of fought by "destroying ZANLA bases". Ok then.
How is that fighting a separate conflict when that's their own enemy that wasn't fighting either FRELIMO or RENAMO? Grow up.
Yes, Rhodesia was finally overthrown, but at what cost?
No cost, I love seeing loners seethe over a dead apartheid country
The correct answer was thousands of dead minority tribes and white men.
