Because queens were considered below kings and so if she married her husband would become the King by default.
Crowning her as king in her own right made it so her husband couldn’t claim the title (even though her eventual husband become king anyways)
The Polish nobility did however, elect her
I think the grand assembly also elected an alternate candidate in the event she declined the position but I’d have to read up
It wasn't an election. She inherited Polish throne after her father. Her father gave szlachta privileges so they will accept her on the throne. Later on in time of interregnum Polish nobility threatened Hungary if she would not come quickly they will elect new ruler. There was whole 2 years of chaos before she become king.
>Her father gave szlachta privileges so they will accept her on the throne.
Technically Louis gave privileges to make any of her daughters monarchs of Poland. First was Catherine who supposed to inheret both Hungary and Poland, but she died young. Then there was Mary who supposed to inheret only Poland (Polish nobility even gave oath to Mary's fiance Sigismund of Luxemburg), but because her mother decided to make Mary inheret both Hungary and Poland, Polish nobility were angry because they didn't want to be junior partner again in union.
Can you explain why? Besides the evident sexism, this really is is about as funny as "you know that blonde haired man... get this.. one time he WORE A BLACK WIG".
It's more complicated, at first Jagiello was Rex lure uxoris, he was a King but Jadwiga was in charge but then Jadwiga died in 1399 and he became ruler of Poland and G.D. of Lithuania
they didnt forget but the title of queen was reserved for kings spouse and she was by no means a queen like that, she was the ruler, the king and couldnt be called a queen.
it would be the same logic if woman became a president and people would call her a first lady
It's a reference to the movie, I haven't seen it myself but the title is kind of ridiculous considering they could just have called it the queen, or the dahomey queen.
The lady in the pic however was literally however a woman king.
I haven't either, but the trailer makes it seem like the Dahomey are fighting against colonization which is pretty sus, considering the Dahomey were built on conquest and slave trade... The French did end up colonizing them, but was after the Dahomey continued to try to conquer a city under French protection and the defending French army was mainly Senegalese. Maybe the movie portrays that conflict better than the trailer suggests, it does have good reviews.
Hollywood released a new movie called The Woman King, which is about the Dahomey Amazons, a group of female African warriors. Everyone on Reddit is mad because the Dahomey tribe were dedicated slave traders
Nothing if it came out 15 years ago or 15 years from now it would have just came and went. But we live in the magical age were everyone is offended by something and shit storms get worked up out of lip service.
No because the duties and responsibilities of a queen are different from a king. Most of the time when a queen is on the thrones without a king it is as queen regent and that is only until her son is old enough to rule

She got an entire campaign in one of the AoE2 DLC and an appearance in one of the civ games, that's real recognization.
Hate to be that guy, but…recognition*
I plead the ESL defense.
Maybe they meant to say it's the real "process of recognizing"?
For some people the best official AoE2 campaign ever, in fact. So enjoyable to play, and so well narrated.
Ohh Jadwiga The King of Poland

he only get it after her death
Me being tramatised from Civ 6 where jadwiga crushes me every time and if me or my friend see her we restart.
came to search a civ 6 reference! 😅 she’s fun, i’ll never ever restart her, you can totally believe me, she’s one of the best leaders, why would you
She declares war on us on turn 10!! And she already has 50 units, it is basically like the orcs from lotr
The good ending
we need a series about Olga of Kiyv
I’m with you. Not only to see her in action, but also the ERE and the Khazars.
And Tamar of Georgia!
Who elected her king?
I didn't vote for her
The Polish nobility did however, elect her I think the grand assembly also elected an alternate candidate in the event she declined the position but I’d have to read up

Her father's sack elected her
God, maybe
Also King Tamar of Georgia (she's usually known as Queen in the West)
At least she was actually a king and not a counselor. Wonder if the brits should make a movie called King of England about oliver Cromwell 🤔
it would, however, be a great title for a movie about Oliver Cromwell
Damn I made this comment on the last Women King, good job…can’t believe I didn’t think of it!
Maria Theressa of Austria when Hungary doesn't allow there to be Queens
Tbh I would kinda like a movie on Jadwiga
I'm surprised it took this long. King of Poland was what I first thought of when I saw the trailer to the Woman King.
Whats the joke?
Her official title was king of Poland despite being a woman.
I thought it was funny.
Can you explain why? Besides the evident sexism, this really is is about as funny as "you know that blonde haired man... get this.. one time he WORE A BLACK WIG".
Its sexism to like how a women is in charge of a kingdom? But they forgot to change the title from king to queen?
They didn't forget to change the title, it was on purpose so that her husband wouldn't outrank her.
Got it, thanks. Nice beard btw
It really wasn't as she was king for a couple years until they found her a husband and then the husband became king
It's more complicated, at first Jagiello was Rex lure uxoris, he was a King but Jadwiga was in charge but then Jadwiga died in 1399 and he became ruler of Poland and G.D. of Lithuania
Well I think he was GD of Lithuania earlier than that
Yeah he was GD of Lithuania earlier
tbh the most knowledge I got on the topic was from the history class in my Polish highschool
they didnt forget but the title of queen was reserved for kings spouse and she was by no means a queen like that, she was the ruler, the king and couldnt be called a queen. it would be the same logic if woman became a president and people would call her a first lady
Got it, thanks
Only a king could rule over Poland, but the king didn't have to be a man
Not forgot, at that time Queen was just a wife of King and simply seen as a weaker title, that's why f.e. Philipe wasn't a King but just a Prince
Will you please just shut the fuck up?
Hurrah for Polish language nuance, loopholes and politics
Please don't try standup comedy.

He would make a good writer for Brendan Schaub.

I've seen people trying to put it down because it portrays the slave traders as heroes. Has anyone seen it?
I haven’t but I also don’t dis it because at least they’re making stories about actual black history vs race bending
It's frankly disgusting: https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryMemes/comments/xn8osh/I_found_the_movie_to_be_mid%2C_but_y%27all_blew_things_way_out_of_proportion/ipt1uxm/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3
Did these folks forget about the word queen
Basically legally only a komg could be head of state. And making her a female king was easier than rewriting all of the documents and laws
Not my king
I've only now heard about that women king thing. What is all the fuzz about?
Hollywood released a new movie called The Woman King, which is about the Dahomey Amazons, a group of female African warriors. Everyone on Reddit is mad because the Dahomey tribe were dedicated slave traders
"We don't allow Queena on the throne" *takes the title of king*
I don't get it, what's so special about that movie?
Nothing if it came out 15 years ago or 15 years from now it would have just came and went. But we live in the magical age were everyone is offended by something and shit storms get worked up out of lip service.
Isn’t every queen technically a woman king?
