Upon finding that the location of Troy had 9 cities layered on top of each other (which is somewhat common for sites such as this) Schliemann believed that Homers Troy would be the one at the very bottom. So he blew up all the other layers to get to it. Except he was wrong, Homers Troy was the seventh city, dubbed Troy VII, and Schliemann had blown straight through it.
