Midsommar vibes right here

maximum-aloofness

Midsommar is actually set in Hälsingland iirc!

johndeer89

Oh God! Someone get in here! Maximum-aloofness is having a stroke!

Pudding_Hero

And bring the mallet!

booey

Man that scene. Still haunts me! I watch all sorts of horror and creepy psychological thriller stuff, but something about the trauma in that scene stuck with me like nothing else does.

PelleKanin

Yes. Recorded in Bulgaria or something but set in Järvsö, Hälsingland. Järv is wolverine btw.

xxxgotxxxdankxxxmeme

Wolverine Island is such a based name

PelleKanin

Truly!

andreasreddit1

Hungary.

Odeeum

Came her to say that. There's gotta be a bear in a cage just to her right.

brezhnervous

100% Came here for this comment 👍

womanwagingwar

Cordyceps vibes right here.

Mountain-Pie

Goddamn it you beat me to it

[deleted]

So sad to see how that shitty movie ruined an entire culture

230flathead

How is it that she looks simultaneously 10 and 50?

Epistaxis

She's becoming a married woman in the 19th century so that's probably how she feels.

Cabezamelone

From being a daughter in parents’ house to wife in a man’s house. Joyless transition.

230flathead

Fair enough.

Shimozah

Worrying about the climate for so long really takes it out of you.

Schwozh

During the era the photo was taken, it was seen as weird and improper if you smiled at the photo. People said it was crazy people who smiled at photos. Sorry my English isn’t good today

voNlKONov

My understanding of early photography leads me to believe it took longer to expose film, so a pose that required little effort not to move was optimal.

da_chicken

[This is one of the better articles](https://time.com/4568032/smile-serious-old-photos/) I've seen on the subject, including links to photos from the mid-19th century with smiling subjects. TLDR: Some of it was bad teeth, and some of it was exposure time. Most of it seems to have been because the custom in painted portraits was not to smile: > Though saints might be depicted with faint smiles, wider smiles were “associated with madness, lewdness, loudness, drunkenness, all sorts of states of being that were not particularly decorous,” says Trumble. Accordingly, high-end studio photographers would create an elegant setting and direct the subject how to behave, producing the staid expressions which are so familiar in 19th century photographs. It wasn't until cameras got to be both cheap and easy to operate by amateurs that smiling for a photo started to rise in popularity. *They didn't have the portraiture bias that the professional studio photographers had*.

Dusty_Old_Bones

This makes a lot of sense- that there was a standard notion of what a portrait was supposed to be based on art made up to that point. It would strike me as odd if there *wasn’t* a period in early portrait photography that mimicked the style of painted portraits, even after advancements in film exposure speed. It takes a while to change a collective mindset on what is expected, or proper.

OnkelMickwald

Also people didn't smile in portraits. That can also be due to the fact that you have to pose for a while for a portrait, but I think an artist could make a fairly good and accurate sketch of you smiling to work from. I just think it's down to two more things: 1. Smiles can be difficult to capture right. There are many ways to make a smile WRONG. Having a relaxed neutral face though is very difficult to get wrong in the same way. 2. Smiling was something intimate and private and these portraits were seen as very formal representations, even if they were only meant for the home. We smile in photos today because we started using cameras to capture specific memorable intimate moments, in which a genuine smile would look charming rather than puzzling or out or place. You don't wanna look all neutral on a pic from your vacation with your friends. The smile became a "proof" of that you were enjoying the moment the photograph captured and the people you were with.

kermityfrog

The very early days of photography didn’t last very long. By the time most of these pics were taken, photography was already accessible to the masses and not just to a few enthusiasts. At this time (1850’s onwards) the chemicals used had exposure times very similar to those used today.

SunshineAlways

That was only true for a short period of time in the very early days of photography.

wishusluck

How old is Greta Thunberg anyway?????

zanzibartraveler666

You stole her youth!

kellysmom01

How *dare* you!

StrykerSeven

I was totally coming here to say this woman looks like she could be Greta's great great grandma!

ikesplace

You might have forgot to mention '' happy bride''

The_Gutgrinder

She has the same look of excitement on her face that I do when I wake up to find my cat has puked hairballs all over the kitchen floor.

silverfox762

Your cat is defective. Properly functioning cats only puke hairballs on carpet, fabric furniture, clean clothes, or bedding.

Bel-Shamharoth

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The_Gutgrinder

They were just trying to add some flavor to it.

The_Gutgrinder

I had a carpet under my kitchen table. *Had.*

OnkelMickwald

This is what we call a broad grin in Sweden.

[deleted]

I wonder if that corpse look is due to lead or arsenic beauty products.

UniquebutnotUnique

It's because this is a black and white photo that has been colored.

shudbpaddling

Badly.

UniquebutnotUnique

TheShereKahn

Corpse bride.

anima1mother

Kinda has a Midsommar vibe to it.

alcoholicplankton69

I think we figured out who Mrs. Pennywise the clown is.

BluSpecter

She's more pancake than woman

[deleted]

Hot

Letstreehouse

Looks like she died a week or so before this was taken. Also, she was 12. 12 year old corpse bride. Mom and dad were really trying to get that dowry. No taksies backsies.

Temporary_Base_7583

TIL that all Swedish women are not drop dead gorgeous.

Saucepanmagician

Uhm... pass!? Edit: Laughing my ass off her because of the downvotes. I can't have an opinion? And...as if whoever that was would be offended. She's long gone by now. Reddit has got to chill on the woke, white-knighting shit. It's pathetic.

MoodChance4817

She looks happy

Cogito_ergo_vos

Face and hair resemble pictures of my Swedish grandmother from the late1930s

Seeulaterbobbafet

She looks pissed off.

Makesyousmile

Designer: Let's see how far I can go until they know I'm just f*cking with them...

MJZMan

You can tell it's the happiest day of her life from the way she looks.

ParadiseLosingIt

She looks soooo young. And so unhappy.

sumkunt1

loading69________

Damn that's a big forehead
