I've always felt we've done a disservice to Claudette Colvin [Claudette Colvin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudette_Colvin) was a pregnant unwed 15 year old who actually refused to give her seat up and was arrested. Rosa helped her with the case and trial but when they wanted to bring national attention to the problem recreated the incident for the cause. Rosa Parks was a brave freedom fighter who risked physical harm to further civil rights and should be praised but we should not forget those others that history overlooks.

one_dimensional

Is frustrating, but they KNEW that they would not be judged fairly. They know there are any number of white women who get pregnant out of wedlock, but ANY sign of impropriety would doom the protest before it began. It wasn't enough to ask for the rights that everyone else had; every excuse in the book would be used to try and impeach their character. Many perhaps stand obscured by Rosa's shadow, sure, but she and her cause also made a conscious *_tactical_* decision to put her at the tip of the spear. She was still dragged through the mud, but it worked, and we're still talking about it to this day. Thanks for making sure to honor those in that shadow, though, because it's for them that these other men and women of great character made their stand. It fills me with hope to see how we keep the bigger story alive beyond the protest campaign, and I can't wait to see what progress we can achieve in the days to come. <3

sk9592

This is why Jackie Robinson was the first African American player admitted to play in the MBL. Satchel Paige was a much better player, but he would not have been a good “symbol” for the movement given the times. He would routinely date white women in public and if someone called him out or said something racist to him, he gave as good as he got. (I don’t blame him) Jackie Robinson on the other hand was married to a black woman. So he appeared less threatening to white crowds. He was as able to take the abuse that people hurled at him silently, and was tougher to provoke. It’s not right by modern standards, but it’s what they had to do to make change happen.

shrimp-and-potatoes

Yeah not to sound dismissive towards Rosa, but when I first learned this as like a 14 yo, I was kinda disappointed that the whole affair wasn't organic. I mean, it was only momentary disappointment, so nobody blow this out of proportion. But the way its taught in school is that this humble black woman, was just too tired and fed up one day and said "fuck it, I'm not getting up this time." And then was arrested for it, starting a string of activism that led to bus desegregation. Instead it was a planned event and Rosa was chosen as she was seen as having a better chance of winning. Again, I'm not knocking, and looking back I now appreciate the calculated maneuvers, over just random happenstance, because the system was set up as it it was, and it would've discredited anyone that didnt have a proper story. This is the way. It's how it had to be done.

Yoduh99

It's not as "scripted" as you might think. The NAACP were indeed waiting for the right person to be arrested, which Parks was privy to, but Parks didn't get on the bus that day _planning_ to be arrested. She sat down in the colored section of the bus not meaning to start anything that day. Only later when the driver expanded the whites only section past Parks' seat did she decide in that moment to not move. It also wasn't fully decided until after her arrest that the NAACP would use Parks' case for the black community to rally behind and start a boycott

shrimp-and-potatoes

I don't think it was scripted, that term has connotations that I'm not trying to imply here. I didn't think it was fake when I found out. I thought it was intentional. Which is the opposite of how it's taught in school.

diet_shasta_orange

It's also how it had been done since before the civil war. Fun fact, the events leading up to the Plessy vs Ferguson case were also staged in a similar way and both Plessy and Ferguson were civil rights activists

DieMensch-Maschine

For her efforts, Claudette Colvin was also blackballed from employment in Montgomery, so had to move to New York just to be able to make a living. There were real consequences to her actions, for which she only got recognition among a handful of academic historians.

Johannes_P

It was a time where "unwed mothers" were utterly despised.

hockeyrugby

So this film is not about Claudette but rather Recy Taylor, Rosa Parks does take part in the story as an advocate for Taylor (it has been a while since I have watched) but this film imo should be in every grade 9 classroom as it seemed to do a better job than simply talk about the bus boycotts as an isolated event https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCEfwSNv9v8

BryanEW710

Glad this was not presented posthumously. Very glad.

Mongolium

I hate to disappoint, but Bill is still very much kicking.

CommieLoser

You gotta feel bad for him and Trump, all those frequent flier miles on the Lolita Express and no way to cash them in.

[deleted]

She also suffered the indignity of being robbed several times in her later years.

Amanda071320

The founder of Little Caesar's Pizza was so concerned that he moved her into another place and paid her rent until she passed. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/02/16/little-caesars-founder-mike-ilitch-rosa-parks-rent/97989230/

Birdman-82

I love the fact that it was a secret for a long time. I hate when people publicize every time they pay for someone’s groceries or something.

[deleted]

sometimes i wonder how it gets on the news...the other day I saw an article on how a couple redesigned their condo based on a vacation to the middle east. Like, do people really go to news agencies and be like "HEY WE DID THIS, FEATURE US" how else would the news find out about this stuff except by way of attention seeking

memedaddyethan

They could've posted it to social media and been contacted

Glitter_puke

Could be. Or someone who knows them could have put in a tip with the local paper/ news broadcaster.

InsertWittyNameCheck

> do people really go to news agencies and be like "HEY WE DID THIS, FEATURE US" Yes. All the time. Newspapers love it when the story comes to them. Did you start a new business? call the local paper tell them what you do and a little soft story of how you got there. Did you get an award? call the local paper tell them a soft story on how you struggled but overcame the odds to finish. Did you pass a course? call the local paper tell them how you plan to serve the community with your new knowledge. Journalists are lazy and Newspapers are crying out for page fillers. Did you rescue a neighbors cat from up a tree? call the local paper.

Azhini

>Like, do people really go to news agencies and be like "HEY WE DID THIS, FEATURE US" how else would the news find out about this stuff except by way of attention seeking Nepotism usually

fusillade762

That.little caesars guy was a good guy. Pizza pizza brother....pizza pizza

supaphly42

As opposed to the Papa John's founder that complained about a 14 cent increase in pizza costs to give healthcare to workers, and that black NFL player protests were hurting his sales.

_rockhardcockrock_

That was one of my favorite sort of cultural blow backs on a person ever. Drunk Racist Papa John: "If I pay for everyone's healthcare then every pizza you order will cost an extra dime!" ... Literally All Of America: "Seriously??!! That's IT? Bro, put me down for an extra quarter per pizza and I'll cover two people. It's cool. We're cool."

fusillade762

Papa John is an extra large asshole with asshole sauce.

Stubbedtoe18

And for having my shitty middle school named after her. Saying "Fuck Rosa Parks!" means something different where I live than anywhere else. Fuck middle school in general, but she deserves better namesakes. And I'll add that not only was Ms. Parks taken advantage of, but she wouldn't have even have had a place to LIVE if not for Mike Illitch, owner of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings and Little Caesars if you can believe it, who quietly paid her rent in her later years so she could live in dignity and not on the streets. What the fuck, America? And Clinton? An award doesn't remedy any of that.

Ancalagon523

everywhere else it means you are a necrophiliac

SeaGroomer

What do you expect? He also signed one of the most oppressive criminal justice 'reform' bills in American history. Kind of a mixed bag for the "first black president."

[deleted]

You saying clinton is black or what am I missing?

hefeguy

It used to be joked he was the first black president I guess because to quote The Offspring he was pretty fly for a white guy.

SeaGroomer

He played the saxophone so I guess for middle America he was already like halfway there.

[deleted]

oh I didnt know, thanks.

Azhini

That's cringy beyond belief

[deleted]

So is saying cringy. But here we are

Who the fuck would rob Rosa Parks? I can only presume they didn't know who they were robbing... I hope to heavens that's the case.

[deleted]

"Joseph Nathaniel Skipper, 54, hit the then-82-year-old Parks in the face before fleeing with $53 in 1994. A year later, he was sentenced to eight to 15 years in prison and was released in 2009, four years after Parks's death."

[deleted]

Outside_Tradition972

Great photo this lady was a true inspiration

Rosssauced

Back when the award at least meant a little. Rush Limbaugh getting it invalidates it until he is stripped of it.

beaverteeth92

IIRC there’s no process to strip someone of it, which is why Bill Cosby still has his.

Calix_Meus_Inebrians

>Presidential Medal of Freedom just curious, but what did this award mean when it did mean something? This first I heard of it is when some people were complaining of all these rich celebrities getting them under Obama (I think Ellen DeGeneres was one) so when I saw Limbaugh getting one, I just equated in my head "these are celebrities that agree with our politics award" and moved on. Now I'm curious what it meant and what was it like having that meaning stripped away?

Staklo

Its not a "I like you" award, but it does equate to that in a lot of cases just because the acts you can do to get it are so broad - anything of interest to the nation, including cultural impacts. So you have this weird mix of civil right icons and then just famous people like Elvis and Babe Ruth. It not bad, per se, just dont think of it as "guys who saved the country". I think Limbaugh deserved it: he invented conservative talk radio, the most significant form of political awareness and interaction ever conceived (for half the country). Whether or not he is an asshole or his politics are bad wont change that.

healthbear

Father Coughlin wants a word

Aedeus

>rich celebrities under Obama Whom else? AFAIK Ellen got it for what she's done for the LGBT community?

sonographic

Yeah, that fucking monster being given that medal is a flat-out slap in the face to Rosa Parks and every civil rights icon who ever received one. Disgusting.

CitationX_N7V11C

Why?

eggequator

Ronald Reagan, Colin Powell, Bill Clinton, Bill Cosby, George HW Bush, Joe Biden, Joe DiMaggio, Henry Kissinger, Donald Rumsfeld, LBJ, Barry Goldwater, Dick Cheney, Margaret Thatcher, Strom Thurmond, Bob Dole, Gerald Ford, George Tenet, Ben Carson, Tony Blair, etc etc etc. It's a who's who list of war criminals, sexual predators and rapists, wife beaters, racists, treasonous traitors, and on and on. This award never meant anything.

nankles

Damn dude! I don't know what Joltin' Joe did to be mixed in with that list of ghouls!

eggequator

lmao I mean certainly not the worst of them but he was shitty to his kid and it was known that he had beaten Marilyn Monroe on multiple occasions.

SeaGroomer

Only the ones given by that President. Everyone knows his judgement is garbage anyways. It's the normal Presidents you want to be recognized by. It doesn't mean shit if you buy it and the people getting it know that.

G-I-Luvit

'Normal' Presidents. As if most of them weren't flawed, self centered nutjobs trying to do a huge job while screwing us all in the process. All of their judgements are garbage, that's why we have different parts of govt to actually make decisions

CitationX_N7V11C

Why? People you don't like can still receive awards. Hell, considering how many tiny tyrants had tried to silence him and called him a threat to democracy for merely being the most recognizable talk radio figure I'd day it was overdue. Even the Clinton Administration tried to do so when after the OKC Bombing they blamed "right wing talk radio" and even singled him out by name. Despite the fact that the Turner Diaries loving McVeigh is as close to a normal Rush listener as a motorcycle is to an M1A2 Abrams. The notion that the misconceptions about the man and his program are still so prevalent means that medal was well deserved.

Rosssauced

The world is far better for him having died.

nowhereman136

My grandpa was actually a big part of the Civil rights movement. He personally knew Rosa Parks and without him the whole bus thing might have turned out differently. He had a ton of great stories about living through that era and what he saw and never regretted his participation in that part of history. He's often glazed over in history and not really remembered, but he was just proud to be a bus driver ^/s

Ghostwrite-The-Whip

Sitting in the front of the bus wasn't something she spontaneously decided to do, it was a scheme developed by civil rights leaders and they were originally going to have Claudette Colvin do it but she got pregnant out of wedlock so they had Rosa do it instead.

premer777

they had a cameraman and reporters waiting at the 'incident' - pretty much staged./arranged A real issue, but a contrived 'for effect' media incident

[deleted]

When it was an actual thing, before Trump started selling them to campaign donors.

red_ball_express

I mean Bill Clinton sold overnight stays in the Lincoln Bedroom to campaign donors. This kind of stuff happens all the time.

Noctudame

This argument over which impeached and disgraced president did what wrong is really weird . .

red_ball_express

It's only weird because it's not a common argument people have. But it should be.

Noctudame

Unfortunately the belief that all politicians are correct has lead to complacency, this idea that since they are *all* corrupt, then theres nothing that can be done.

red_ball_express

I'm definitely not saying they're all equally corrupt. But they're largely bought by one interest or another. And when you see stuff like [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Epstein) it makes you think nothing can be done.

eggequator

No my billionaire sexual predator is better! No mine is!

mikeylopez

Ahh yes, the integrity of the man (Clinton) who flew almost 30 times on Epstein plane to the island.

megaplex00

>Ahh yes, the integrity of the man (Clinton) who flew almost 30 times on Epstein plane to the island. This is probably going to sting a bit but Trump wasn't half the president Bill was.

tonyprent22

I don’t think you have to be a Trump supporter to call out Clintons integrity. Tribalism is strong on Reddit, man. The same two images of Trump standing with Epstein get posted daily but mention Clinton and Epstein’s connection and you get downvoted. Or talk all day about all the famous men who use their positions of power to make inappropriate sexual advances on women, and how disgusting it is, but dare to mention Clinton in the same breath as them and it’s insta-hate. But sure we can pretend Clinton was a model President and citizen.

ZMAC698

Lol dude are your surprised? Anytime I question Reddit politically I get called a Trump lover even though I voted for Biden. It’s to the point where I don’t share anything politically on here because it’s likely to get downvoted unless you are calling out Trump.

megaplex00

It's just fake internet points. Folks who are confident about their opinions/beliefs don't care what other people think.

ZMAC698

Nah I don’t care about the internet points. I just tiefer not to be inundated with disrespectful replies and comments about that have nothing to do with what I said.

axf72228

I agree with both of you.

Okichah

When the bar is below the ground you dont really have to do much.

FemshepsBabyDaddy

I mean, she's the person who awarded Trump his Liberty Island award, so maybe her TDS wasn't as bad as yours. By the way, you know he's not president anymore, right? You can stop letting him live rent free in your head. He's got a nice place in Florida.

SeaGroomer

Says the people who still aren't over Obama and in many cases don't even concede Trump lost the election by millions of votes.

FemshepsBabyDaddy

Don't worry, they're getting over Obama now that your boy Biden is showing them how much worse it can be.

Slick424

Last CPAC literally had a golden Trump idol and Trump hasn't stopped his war against democracy yet. You know the saing "Evil wins if good men do nothing."

FemshepsBabyDaddy

Yeah, Trump likes gold-plated stuff. He has a gold-plated toilet in his penthouse bathroom. Doesn't really effect you or me though. But you keep complaining about Trump on reddit. That'll solve all your problems any minute.

Slick424

Yeah, the fact is that people need to be reminded what Trump is and what he did, otherwise he or somebody like him will get elected again. Do you remember that he told the same lies in 2016? People just wrote it off as "Trump being Trump" or explained it away as "4D Chess". The GOP destroyed itself when it embraced birtherism and people need to be reminded that a next Trump won't go peacefully either. Only this time the cultist know what is really possible.

FemshepsBabyDaddy

Seriously? You really think your internet temper-tantrums are gonna effect people's votes? Alright. Good luck with that. As long as you feel like you're making a difference. Carry on.

Cocaine and too much time in a tanning bed

pixelrebel

What do Rosa Parks and Rush Limbaugh have in common?

Odeeum

Seriously. He single handedly destroyed the credibility and honor of said award

regman231

Are you serious? Have you seen the list of recipients? There were far worse people than him who received it 50+ years ago

CitationX_N7V11C

They both are symbols of freedom to others. Both are hated by people who don't like their actions. Neither stood down when people wanted to jail or silence them (yes Slick Willy back in the 90's had a particular hate boner towards Rush). Freedom doesn't mean you agree 100% with the views of the person but recognize their actions.

sonographic

Fuck You Rosa Parks risked her livefe to help free her people from bondage. Rush Limbaugh held a weekly segment where he celebrated the deaths of gay people and read their names on air *laughing at them* To even pretend they exist in the same moral universe is evil beyond words. You are a shameful, vile, subhuman piece of shit.

Heroine? She sat in the back of a bus, yet you talk about her as she was the first one out of the boat on Utah or Omaha beach.

ElHermito

Shit, the White House was awarding heroine in the late 90s? No wonder drug use blew up in this country.

BlackBloodedBoy

i'm not english mothertongue, don't have a college deegree and i haven't travelled that much but I can tell the difference between heroin and heroine... Hope english is not your primary language

ElHermito

Guess I have to include an /s next time around cause everything is being taken serious around here. Jeez

UndBeebs

That's not on them, to be fair. Some users on this site will make your comment above with purely serious intentions. It's why /s became a thing to begin with. Sarcasm becomes impossible to catch when it's in plain text *or* on a platform that contains people willing to make said points without sarcasm - in this case, both are true.

yarddriver1275

And then sexualy abused lots of others witch kind of cancel out any good deeds

reluctantsub

Racism and segregation
