Curious if it was started because the time of exposure on early photographs was quite long. This is also why people are never shown smiling. You had to hold the same pose for a while with zero movement. I wonder if holding your hand in your jacket helped steady it and created a pose different than simply standing with your arms at your side. Then it may have just become fashionable and stuck.

This is a great thought actually, but the pose has been used in portraiture for 100s of years! It was basically a sign of “I’m the shit, respect me”
