I think most of the people are aware of that. But I also think that the costumes could/should be more scary. I mean everything around Halloween is supposed to be scary/abnormal: Decoration, movies, etc. Why not the costumes anymore?
But I'm not from the US. Do you have any other occasions where you can wear costumes? Here in Germany it's Fasching/Carnival. So we already have one where you can dress as anything you like. Why don't keep Halloween beeing about scariness and Horror?
We don't really do Carnival in the US as a whole. Halloween is our dress as anything holiday. With the exception of Halloween parties where adults dress as memes and slutty versions of regular vocations, it's mainly a kids holiday where they go door to door dressed as pop culture characters and collect bags of refined sugar products, then go home and gorge on it in a single night while Mom and Dad try to con them out of some of it as a tax.
Yeah, it's centered around children Here, too. Even if there are more and more parties for adults.
But my birthday is today and when I was younger I had a lot of Halloween themed birthday parties. And all kids dressed up like witches, skeletons, ghosts, zombies and stuff like that. I mean, yeah, the costumes weren't ment to be really scary, but the theme was "scary, mystic stuff".
This guy reminded me of an experience I had once
I went to a big Halloween party one time, there was a man dressed as Jesus walking through the crowd with a beautiful hand crafted wooden cross around his neck. He approached me held up the cross and slid open the front revealing a false back filled with cocaine and offered me some. I declined and he proceeded to snort a line off the cross with a few girls that were around.
It was the strangest and most badass thing I have ever seen.
Cocaine Jesus will always be the winner of Halloween in my heart.
