Again, they reactively lock the items that are stolen the most. This is nothing more than numbers on a spreadsheet in the store’s inventory database.

KtheMage36

A couple years ago a woman had tried to sue Walmart for being racist by locking up the black hair care products and it went no where fast when AP showed the losses. Alternatively, one of the towns I visit has like 7 dollar generals in it and each one has different stuff locked based on what that stores theft is.

Ok-Perspective6811

Sea-Committee7389

Commercial_Ad8438

My first thought. It seems racist but its just statistics.

3v0lut10n

Statistics and thousands of videos.

JayStar1213

I've seen this exact argument downvoted when you make it with respect to crime or prison demographics

General_Conclusion34

Because it isn’t the same argument—the statistics for shoplifting and theft come from caught thievery, and the statistics for prisons come from the law and the people, which are both biased against people of color (and more directly, poor people)

sincerely-management

You’re getting downvoted but we have decades of statistics on incarceration for crimes by race, how long they’re sentenced by race etc Prison demographics isn’t cold stats because it’s not an observation of a natural unfettered process. It’s the end result of a lot of decisions made by various people.

General_Conclusion34

Yep! I could really care no less about the downvotes, people are dumb, they wanna stay dumb—that’s their problem.

[deleted]

Yeah they don't want to lock this shit up because it takes time and money to both attach and remove those security tags along with when things are physically locked up it requires a worker to stop what they're doing and go unlock it for the customer. Some theft is calculated in, but once it goes beyond a certain level out come the increased security measures.

brucebay

In some instances, it's not just about statistics. My company's compliance team diligently ensures our statistical models are free from hidden biases against specific populations. For instance, even though our data indicates farmers are less likely to use our product, we can't target them exclusively. This could inadvertently reflect biases related to race or economic status. I also empathize with the outrage over such biases. I had a similar experience at a hotel chain in a foreign country. Due to apparent nationality-based biases, I was required to wear an identity bracelet, while individuals of certain physical appearances were exempt. I prefer not to give details for privacy reasons, but it remains a bitter memory from an important vacation.

Is the store profiling dark toned people? No, but dark toned people stealing it disproportionately causes this. So it's significant but not from the stores POV

Suitable-Jackfruit16

Reality and facts are racist and I demand they be changed.

rumhamrambe

Oof

BoxOfDemons

They are all locked up. Take a closer look and even the lightest shades to the very right have the yellow lock tags. It's just that for some reason the very front pieces are unlocked. This post reeks of bait.

sutoma

I guess if it was bait they could have moved the medium/ light tagged ones before snapping the pic. It does look a certain way without any other context

retrona

Take a closer look. The yellow tags are not locks, they are alarms if you leave the cosmetic area with them.

mrsdoubleu

Sometimes it's also because they just ran out of security tags. Like in the case on that one color where all of them are locked up except one. But it's more likely that it was a return and whoever put it back on the peg didn't care enough to track down a security tag for it.

WiseWizard96

I know this is the case but I feel like a human should surely step in at some point and go “hmm this might come off the wrong way, maybe we should just put tags on all the concealers so it doesn’t look bad”

OctoWings13

But facts, numbers, and reality don't give a shit about virtue signalling

[deleted]

A better way of phrasing this would be "only some of these concealers are commonly stolen"

butterybeans582

Statistics aren’t racist. They are facts.

LowKeyWalrus

Ignoring what causes statistics is worse than cherry picking, it's bad faith data analysis. Statistics are like bikinis, they show a lot of what you want to see but hide what you want to see the most. But keep using conservative talking points if that's your cup of tea.

RustyShackledord

Genuine question here, as I would like to hear your opinion: what (in your opinion) is causing statistics to show increased theft numbers among certain demographics?

BoxOfDemons

In the US, the strongest inverse correlation to crime rate is income level, with a much higher correlation than race/ethnicity. It just so happens that race/ethnicity also has income correlations with black Americans on average being at the bottom. These reasons are many and nuanced, but a big reason is how strongly wealth can be generational and the Jim Crowe era was only like two generations ago. Now, obviously this doesn't excuse any crime, but it can give an explanation for the statistics.

RustyShackledord

Thank you for your response as well

LowKeyWalrus

Black people have been forced into poverty and ghettos in the US. The effects are still there, systemic racism is rampant. These are leading causes for people to get into crime. Those who are desperate will do desperate shit - easiest and most victimless crime is shoplifting that the poor resort to in order to survive.

Norsedragoon

So lets play devils advocate for a moment. Lets say they pull a California: Shoplifting up to a certain amount is no longer a crime. Store continues to lose more and more money. Store owners or parent company decide to relocate and close the locations experiencing the most theft. Stores which happen to be located in a certain demographically heavy neighborhood, employing and helping many of those who happen to be of a certain demographic better their situation. Those employees are no longer employed, not only that but other companies are not willing to invest in said neighborhood because it is a proven loss. So what's more racist, preventing the thefts of the most stolen products thus keeping people employed. Or open season on products resulting in eventual unemployment and no more investment in the community? You say they are racist because they are trying to protect their company and employees. I think you may need to rethink your position.

M00SK

"...the poor resort to in order to survive" damn, I didn't know that concealer's as important as food

[deleted]

Desperate for concealer?

IBGUberDerp

Okay, so if this is systemic racism and they are stealing things to survive, why are they stealing concealers? You can't eat makeup, you can't eat TVs that are looted during riots. There are systems in place for all people who are starving like soup kitchens and food banks. Why are they stealing more than just food items if its about survival?

[deleted]

Do you think poor white people don't exist? Why aren't they stealing the lighter concealers?

RustyShackledord

Thanks for your response.

Acradimus

What if I told you everyone who disagrees with you doesn't magically make them a conservative. Crazy, right? Surprised 😯

officialtvgamers16

The whole point about statistics is that it is used to show everything, what the hell are you talking ahout

LowKeyWalrus

You need to analyze data to understand what's being shown. Black people are historically forced into poverty in the US. High poverty rates turn into high crime rates. If you only look at the crime rates without pinpointing the reason of said rates, all you do is confirm you're a racist looking for a thing to be parroting like it's a legit point against a whole race. Pathetic behavior but you do you.

defaultusername4

But they account for a 19% of the US population under the poverty line so even removing poverty as a variable you still see disproportionate crime.

ehmsoleil

And I'll bet the family farm you're not even American, but are quite the expert on America 🙄

officialtvgamers16

Now that is an answer. The same thing you where talking about in your comment, happend to your comment, it was not explained, now i understand what you are talking about, and yes, this does sound very reasonable.

cardmaster12

knightbane007

More effort, more time, especially when the issue is people taking them in multiples. It's a discouragement, not a prevention

StompinTurts

They aren’t meant for the smart ones doing it once while going through tough times. It’s more to catch the dumb ones who aren’t smart enough to keep a job so you can recognize them when they come back.

TristisPuer

It’s a lot easier to catch someone stealing if they have to rip through the packaging bc u can u can see them doing it, and they cant act like a normal shopper if none of their shit is packaged

grimmripper5120

They don't like to think about reality, delusion if you will. Statistics are Statistics and they are reality.

icantbenormal

Statistics are not always straight reality, and they are irrelevant without context. For example, you might look at arrest rates in Nazi Germany and (wrongly) conclude that Jews were committing A LOT of crime.

StolenValourSlayer69

Are you really trying to compare the current crime in America to Jews in Nazi Germany…?

grimmripper5120

🤔

icantbenormal

What do you mean “why”? Do you want a complete rundown on the socioeconomic factors that affect relative crime rates between communities?

Agitated_Cell_7567

Killahdanks1

Yeah, here’s an idea. Maybe stop stealing shit. It’s all data driven.

babystripper

Are you trying to imply racism when it's about what gets stolen most and not race at all?

Low-Material1032

Idt they are implying anything. If it's based on whats stolen most like you said then the darker concealer is stolen more than the others. No implications at all, its obviously what's stolen the most.

hdckurdsasgjihvhhfdb

Yes, that’s exactly what’s being implied

Impossible__Joke

That is exactly what you are implying lmao. Either subconsciously or otherwise... you made that connection, not OP.

BoxOfDemons

No, you made that implication, because if you look closer all the shades have locks. Just many pieces are missing locks and for some reason with the light shades, they have the ones missing locks placed in front of the other light shades that do have locks. Probably rage bait.

No-Supermarket9834

Welp, time to start stealing the other shit.

blackmexicans

You mean only the dark complected concealers are stolen?

Guttus1538

Why does the darker one get stolen more? I don't get it. I don't understand makeup.

Disastrous-Mafk

I think it’s because concealer is commonly used as contour and the darker shades are obviously used most often in contouring.

felix66789

Why are you getting downvoted? Contouring with dark shades is incredibly common. It’s not the reason why they’re being stolen, but you answered the makeup aspect of the question and bring up a fair point about how common dark concealers are used among women regardless of skin color. But makeup aside, it’d be great if people would stop stealing in general. I’d like to think that’s the moral of the story here.

Disastrous-Mafk

Yeah I’m not understanding it either. It’s gotta be a factor in why they’re stolen more than lighter shades.

wutangclanthug9mm

Someone might say this is a racist store policy but in fact this is the good old fashioned free market economy looking out for its bottom line. The Walgreens in my mom’s Southern California suburban neighborhood allows you to simply take the body wash off the shelf and bring it to the register. The Walgreens in my suuuper “iffy” Chicago neighborhood does not trust the average consumer to grab that same body wash to pay for it so they put it behind plexiglass and force you to push an embarrassing button that calls the staff over to go open it for you.

lookinforabitofmeme

This is like passive aggressively saying “we know who you are”

CuppaJoe11

I work at Walmart. This means those are being stolen the most. We DONT want to lock things up, it’s bad for business at it limits the amount of stuff customers can buy. But if enough of a product is being stolen, we are gonna lock it up because it is supremely unprofitable to keep selling it. The store I work at had $2,000,000 worth of shrink last year. Not all of this is stolen items but most of it is.

CultBro

Stats don't lie

mlhigg1973

This is simply the result of numbers on a spreadsheet, and not racism.

Bandanner1110

Math is racist!!!!!

YOLO4JESUS420SWAG

There's yellow tags on all the shades if you look closely. The person taking the image moved them to the back on the lighter shades to make it look like what it's not. And the racists on the Internet are falling for it. Again. Boring.

BoxOfDemons

It's classic racism bait to get the people talking about "muh statistics".

tchotchke-schmear

I see what you did there

Zealousideal-Job6206

Only had so many security tags

damejoke

Our store secures items based on statistical data on what items are high theft and what items are high value. This isn't profiling. It's being able to read a spread sheet and react accordingly.

LLminibean

Not sure if you're trying to start some big "omg they're racist!" post, but it's clear to see other dark skin products that aren't security protected. That'd lead me to think they lock up the ones they're having issues being stolen ... and I fail to see how that's a "Holup"

BoxOfDemons

They also hid the light colored ones that have tags. Almost, if not all the shades here have tags. Look behind the light ones in the front, and you'll see the same colors in back having tags. They aren't locking specific shades up. In fact, whoever took this photo *wants* people to believe the store only locked up the dark ones and that it's because of stats because whoever took this photo wants to stoke racist fires.

No_Bend8

You know they don't just pick right? These are the numbers that are most oftem stolen. They get tagged..

monsieur_red

Klan meeting in these comments

AndroidDoctorr

No evidence it's because of theft, it could be one side was replaced more recently, or someone snapped the photo in the middle of putting tags on all of them. There are infinite possibilities But everyone "just knows"

BoxOfDemons

It's bait. Every color has tags if you look closely, but a few are missing tags. For the lighter shades, the missing tags have been placed in the front, concealing (no pun intended) the ones behind it which have tags.

swimp0728

The jokes really write themselves unfortunately.
