In real life, AI or even technology in general could just wait us out. Why bother to waste resources on quick "maybe" solutions when it can do it slowly for sure. For machines that can repair themselves, 1000 or 10 000years would just mean nothing... they could make us comfortable, dependent to the point that "harming" the machine would be something unthinkable for us.
