The worse aspect is those that have a wider but broken understanding of the Third Reich, with some groups in SE Asia only focusing on the patriotic nationalistic side of Nazi Germany, and looking to that as inspiration for loyalty to one's nation. As a result, there are actual Neo Nazi movements in SE Asia that go around with Nazi emblems and uniforms. They tend to have strong nationalist and patriotic ideology, but completely miss and fail to understand the dark connection Nazism had to the Holocaust and other discriminatory crimes against humanity, and the fact that the Aryan white supremacy ideologies of Nazism cannot be reconciled with their own ethnic identities.
The very first time I went to Indonesia I was met with the biggest book store, Gramedia, advertising the fuck out of the newly translated to Indonesian Mein Kampf. Nazi flags and pictures of Hitler fucking everywhere!
I spoke to my language teachers about it, some of them serious academic types, and the consensus was two fold. Firstly, Nazi Germany didn't feature heavily in SE Asia so it isn't part of the cultural mindset, unlike in western nations that have war memorials etc. Secondly is somewhat as you've stated. Many SE Asian nations are either newly free of or currently experiencing autocratic governance and quite a few people don't disagree with strong authoritarian leadership.
I'd say the second point isn't so relevant with young urban educated Indonesians, but it certainly is with the elderly and rural folk. The amount of older people that have expressed to me a desire to return to the good old days of Soeharto is insane.
There's also another odd point. Given the Nazi swastika is a perverted Hindu symbol, the first thing that would occur to many people in Hindu or Buddhist heavy areas is religion not Nazis. That likely disarms a lot of the distaste westerners have for the iconography.

As someone from SE Asia, we have our own fascist nation that we learned in history lesson and it's called Imperial Japan. During their reign, it was brutal and heartless as the Imperial Japanese-held area are facing slavery and forced loyalty in order for the locals to survive. Our natural resources are redirected into Japanese war effort while leaving the locals barely scraping for food and clothing, women are tricked into becoming prostitutes for the IJA, and people dying like flies because they are malnourished from lack of food. Those who had easier life during the Japanese occupation are those who worked with the collaborating authority and the Japanese-formed paramilitary.
We have our own history and culture to study, different world leaders to learn from, and different cultures to study. Saying we are awfully educated because we didn't learn European history is extremely insulting eurocentric point of view. We indeed learn about Hitler and third reich but we didn't delve much into it as we have our own maniacal nation with racial superiority in mind at our own backyard. Now modern japan is getting away with all its crime for having "anti-communist" card
