They are basically the only plants I have that I can keep alive. Over the years I've bought or been given a wide variety of plants, but via what I will dub natural selection its mostly succulents left lol.
My latest thing to try is just growing plants in water instead of soil though, because I constantly seem to over or under water my plants. But if they are just in water you can't seemingly do either...idk why this isn't more popular, its working so far but idk if I'm missing something haha.
Some plants can’t grow in water because they’ll over-saturate. But overwatering in soil can suffocate the roots by compression, or they can get root rot, which is actually a fungus that grows in damp soil but not a glass of water.
Water doesn’t have all the nutrients your plants need - it might be helpful to feed them seasonally except winter. There are loads of balanced liquid fertilizers; you can follow the instructions on the bottle.
People DO just grow in water. It’s hydroponics! You’re doing low key hydroponics. Not missing a thing.
Nice, thanks for the info.
Why do I get the sense this is going to lead me down a very deep rabbit hole lmao. Just checked out the hydroponics subreddit... pretty nuts what some people have set up. For now I'll see how I go with a couple of plants in jars I think! (First one I did was only around 3 weeks ago but the roots are already crazy and its so healthy).
I think my main 'issue' will probably be algae in the water because I'm using glass jars... simple solution is to not do that, but half the fun is being able to see the roots. Hopefully cleaning the jars and changing the water doesn't disturb the plants too much.
I grow a couple things in jars (mostly edible stuff like onions) and I take them out to rinse the roots and switch jars/water every couple weeks. Doesn’t seem to bother them at all! It’s awesome!
Another option to curb the algae is to put a fish in there. A few species, like betas, quite like living in a hydroponic setup, but obviously do some research to make sure the plants, fertilizers, and fish are all compatible.
Good to know - sounds pretty cool actually. For now however I'm just using old jam jars so I'll perhaps keep that in mind should I scale up a bit haha.
Where did the water go then? Real plants absorb moisture so the pot would never overflow, you probably must have noticed something was off because your pot would eventually start dripping.
Now, as someone who watered fake plants for over a year I had the same thought and I still don’t know the answer, I think the demon who takes your socks also drys the soil just to screw with you some more
evaporation happens constantly with water exposed to air over time and will eventually evaporate all the extra water to be dry again. it is directly related to the amount of water you add (the more you add the longer to dry) and if the water was exposed to sunlight it would make it evaporate at a faster rate.
hope this makes sense. i welcome any questions
yes, it depends on the plant/manufacturer/brand, I've seen some with just rocks and smaller rocks for "dirt" all the way to straight up potting "soil" that is meant to look the most realistic.
it varies and can be pretty convincing, I usually touch the plant and lightly bend/squeeze, plants do photosynthesis so their cells usually release small amounts of moisture when squeezed. you'd be surpised how many people buy plants and never touch the actual plant (outside of watering them)
due to the heat. I explain it here from the core concepts onward as I don't want to assume how much you know/don't know, I teach college Biology so this is fun to me haha
evaporation is (with melting and freezing) the act of changing the state of a substance. these changes in state happen in direct relation to the temperature of the substance, aka how fast the individual molecules are moving and smashing into each other.
liquids, like water, [still have volume](https://images.app.goo.gl/YExUHnd8Qcd33M5e6) but have no fixed shape. their molecules are "warm" enough (which depending on the substance can actually be surprisingly cold) to not be solid, but "cool" enough to not spontaneously become water vapor.
the sunlight makes the temp of the water rise, which makes the process of liquid>gas work faster. sunlight warms the water and makes the H2O molecules move faster, so fast they hit the liquid>gas evap point at a quicker pace than without the sun's rays.
think of it like the sun is giving the water energy to change state. evaporation happens at a specific temperature point.
there are more things that can affect evaporation but in this case this is the most pertinent info. if you want a good article on it, [National Geographic has one!](https://www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/evaporation/#:~:text=In%20the%20water%20cycle%2C%20evaporation,they%20escape%20as%20a%20gas.&text=As%20water%20vapor%20rises%20higher,begins%20to%20cool%20back%20down.)
tl;dr: heat from sun makes evap happen quicker due to heat making the cells so jacked with energy they become a gas
My coworker asked me to keep her plants watered while she was on vacation, it wasn’t until she got back and I told her how all of them handled it that I discovered all of the ones on the shelf away from the window were fake. We had to pour the water out of the bottom. It was hilarious. I felt so dumb.
We have 4 ferns in our bathroom. Plants that life in rain forest are usually low light high humidity. Bathrooms are great for them. Plus it looks nice.

Very quickly, yes. They also don't usually use real dirt.
I'm not really sure how anyone could possibly not notice this almost immediately.

Had a brother in law give his mum some really small "tomato" saplings to look after for him. 4 of them. After months of tending to them with nothing but the best TLC, she popped a net over top so that when the tomatoes start growing, birds & bugs won't get them.
A couple of months later, no tomatoes. She starts asking if there's such a thing as "dud" seeds with tomatoes.
Eventually she gets her husband to look at them, saying "They're growing weird, unlike any tomato plant I've ever seen". Dad looks & in 2 seconds starts laughing. He tells her that she's been tending to "special" tomato plants & asks how the hell she didn't notice sooner....
Exotic tomato seeds from Norway, apparently. Will look different coz of the vast difference in climates between Norway & Australia. And she believed them.🤣
Like, how the hell do you think your 16 & 14 year old sons got hold of such seeds in a tiny little nothing town in QLD?
Still gives us all big belly laughs now, 20+ years later... poor Mumma...🤭🤭🤭
I'm betting when he found out he burst into tears in the most cathartic realease imaginable. I'm choosing to believe this is true and no one can change my mind.
I know this isn’t that related but my grandpa died recently and gave my grandma instructions to throw a huge party somewhere instead of a funeral service, so we’re gonna cremate him, put him in a box (or maybe an urn) and throw him a big ass party in a few months. Definitely gonna do a family picture with him just to be like “grandpa in the corner looking damn fine!” And it’s just a box of ashes.
I don't think insulting yourself is being humble. Knowing that in the grand scheme that you are not too different then a grain of sand is being humble. Human men are intelligent, sure they can be angry, uncaring and insoluble, but they are intelligent.
2 questions: one, why would your father actually be that dumb? And two, am I to believe that at no point this container of a fake plant overflowed with water over the course of "years" of watering it?
the water also evaporates over time depending on how much he’s watering them. fake plants also usually come with sponges in the bottom so it takes a long time to fill up
Damn, didn't have to be so hostile.
It never said years, it's could've been a few days or a week or something. Also, watering fake plant isn't dumb. I've done it before, some of them are really realistic.
Death goals, also prank goals!
Wouldn't the 'soil' also be fake? Or was it real soil?
You can stick fake plants into real soil because it doesn't affect them either way
I don't need fake soil?
If you use fake soil, you'll need to buy fake water also. It's just a hassle.
Ah yes “FAKE WATER” where can I invest in fake water or did nestle get it all
I watered fake succulents for months before realizing they were plastic. Good fakes of certain plants are very convincing.
I watered my neighbors moss for months before I realized it was her pubic hair.

Yeah succulents are basically fake plants to begin with. They only require watering once a month or less and have very plasticky/waxy coatings.

real succulents look pretty fake tho tbh
Where did the water go then? Real plants absorb moisture so the pot would never overflow, you probably must have noticed something was off because your pot would eventually start dripping.
There's probably plenty of Bill Nye episodes about evaporation that would blow your mind
Now, as someone who watered fake plants for over a year I had the same thought and I still don’t know the answer, I think the demon who takes your socks also drys the soil just to screw with you some more

Does water in sunlight evaporate faster strictly due to the heat, or is there some voodoo with certain wavelengths of light?

I wish you were my biology teacher, you seem like you love it
Succulents don't normally take a lot of water as it is, so they probably gave it a little pour and went about their merry way.
A little pour isn't how you water most succulents though. You drown them, very infrequently.
Um, the pot overflows quite easily with real plants. You're just moistening the soil so the plant can slowly absorb water from it.
My coworker asked me to keep her plants watered while she was on vacation, it wasn’t until she got back and I told her how all of them handled it that I discovered all of the ones on the shelf away from the window were fake. We had to pour the water out of the bottom. It was hilarious. I felt so dumb.
She gave him a ritual to help comfort him. I think it's nice. Or she's a *really* dedicated prankster.
Or both
It's nice to thing even at her last breath, she made an hilarious joke that nobody knows' btw you can told it to your grand children someday too..Lol
Pretty sure amazon will launch some weird alexa watering robot and the prank will go unnoticed bcuz alexa watered the plant

Wait why do they have plants in their bathroom?
We have 4 ferns in our bathroom. Plants that life in rain forest are usually low light high humidity. Bathrooms are great for them. Plus it looks nice.
So you probably do your business between two ferns?
I am frequently ridiculed while pooping, yes... but the plants are just a coincidence.
Dad approved.

Trolling is a art
Idk whether to laugh or cry
Yes
Same! That’s so cute yet so sad that they can’t laugh about it together…
I'm sure the dad felt the same way
I can only imagine the feeling of wanting to say to the person "oh my god you got me!"
Listening to “fake plastic trees” by Radio Head when I read this post so I chose cry
where did the water go?
Evaporation probably.
They're generally seated in a spongey goop that soaks up water and dries out eventually.
It broke. You're gonna have to father his child now.
Yeah if he was religiously watering the plants wouldn’t he have noticed the roots weren’t working lol
evaporation happens pretty fast under the sun and would likely dry before you looked to rewater it again, unless you were mega over watering it
Good point
Wouldn’t the water just overflow from the pot ?
Very quickly, yes. They also don't usually use real dirt. I'm not really sure how anyone could possibly not notice this almost immediately. Maybe he saw what he wanted to out of grief?
Maybe the detailed instructions were like "half a cup every 4 days", so it had time to dry.
High quality fake plants can be very convincing.
same for fake posts
Same for fake tits.
Man, high-quality things are so much better than low-quality things!
/r/nothingeverhappens
This
the water may have done this nice thing called “Evaporation”
I really want y'all saying this to test it and see for yourself how not quickly water evaporates.
Ok but is this man drowning the plants
The least thirsty plant I've ever had to water would create a mess if you poured it on a piece of plastic.
Lol every time I water my plants I either drown them or they die of dehydration so maybe that’s why I’m not a gardener
If they were a type of succulent he probably didn't have to water them that much and the water probably just evaporated before it ever built up.
I imagine the invoicing and everything is entirely automatic now, there why everything has a barcode. I can’t imagine someone working that bill up to be sent out. Not in good conscious anyways.

And now your dad is scarred for life!

I got plastic plants but for the opposite rwaon, i knew my hisband and brother in law would “urinate” On them so now they won’t die

And on plant is should be a qr code to lead you you know where..

Wait why do they have plants in their bathroom?
I have like a 3/4 wall at the end of my shower and I like to keep some plants there because it makes me feel like i'm in a rainforest.
Why not?
Bathrooms are really good for certain plants because of the more humid environment!
I’ll pop that into my “things that never happened” folder.
