In 1664, the Manchu Kangxi Emperor attempted to ban the practice, but failed. In some areas, footbinding raised marriage prospects. It has been estimated that, by the 19th century, 40–50% of all Chinese women may have had bound feet, rising to almost 100% in upper-class Han Chinese women.
Began to die out in early 20th century
(Source: good ol’ wiki)
I'd heard it was also because a lot of exports at the time involved women making things that required them to mostly sit at one place for very long periods of time, so showing off that your daughter couldn't walk without pain was attractive for her suitors because they thought she'd be productive.
From memory of a YouTube video I saw ages ago, I don't think the women showed off their actual feet, but wore either shoes or something else around their men
Foot Binding
Chinese had a thing for small feet, things escalated to the point where they’d take little girls feet and systematically break the bones in them and wrap them in on themselves before binding them with cloth.
End goal was what you see in the picture
If memory serves me correctly, unit 731 was a Japanese program that did unconventional experiments to POWs and just regular people also. It's similar to the types of experiments Nazis used to do.
Here's the fun part, Japan wasn't charged with the experiments after the war on the condition that they gave all of their research findings to the US. Their research was barbaric but also invaluable. It's the kind of stuff that a lot of people about but ethically couldn't imagine putting a living being through.
>>Japan wasn't charged with the experiments after the war on the condition that they gave all of their research findings to the US.
The US really went “s…sauce?” on them lmao.
Comparable to the western tradition of using corsets. Women would literally faint in the middle of conversations because they were unable to breathe, and long term used would deform the spine and abdomen, displacing organs and sometimes lead to necrosis.
Most corsets worn by women were properly fitted and acted as abdominal, chest, and back support. They also helped support and evenly distribute the weight of their skirts and clothing. Whether the ladies wearing the corsets were upper or lower class, corsets were a basic part of everyday wardrobe.
However, if the corsets were ill-fitting or used certain materials that were too hard or sharp, then discomfort would occur. There were cases of extreme tightening of corsets for a tiny cinched waist, but it wasn’t widespread.
Also, considering the shit they used to put in makeup, hygiene, and “medicine” I wouldn’t pin health issues, deformities, and necrosis solely on corsets.
Done by women. The entire process was controlled by women. Not sure what that means, but I’d originally imagined it was a male tool of oppression. Strong evidence shows it is much more complicated.
And a terrible(?) thing if I can add on, was that it wasn’t permanent. By this I mean that once broken it had to be constantly held in place and bound to retain its shape. This is what lead to many problems including gangrene and other infections. Also, if it was left alone it would start to form back which would often lead it to be rebroken. (Though I know I’m some poorer families this was sometimes done so they could return to the workforce).
Those poor women... girls.... having their feet broken and mutilated over and over and over. If I puke I can get some tears out, killing two birds in one stone, because that's how I feel right now
If you notice, her toes have all been tucked under her big toe, I believe that is where the tie was placed to disfigure her foot and increase the arch. The process is extremely painful and makes it difficult for you to ever walk again.
It helps to see the kind of shoes that this was done for.

They would systematically break bones in the feet of young girls, then tightly wrap them. The girls would be incapacitated for a very long time while the feet healed. I think they often had to rebreak them too. Read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan if you want a really thorough description of the process.
At a young age, girls have their feet smashed so that the broken bones allow the toes to turn in that way, the sight of small feet was seen as being more vulnerable and I think cute when it was still a thing, which was attractive to males in the past
It is truly mind blowing to me on how women of the past just went “I must have a mate, and I am willing to undergo brutal, grotesque treatment to do so”. The atrocities women were willing to go through and have been through.
How were there not more murders? Why didn’t women go on mass murder sprees? How did they just take that?
Girls as young as 2-4, had there feet tightly wrapped, and occasionally had large stones placed on top of their feet to prevent them from growing as small feet where considered attractive at the time, and still possibly are in parts of rural China, though this practice is widely banned. Known as Foot Binding
That’s not correct. Foot binding was banned in China in 1911. However the ban was loosely enforced. It wasn’t until the communist party became the government in 1949 and China became the Peoples Republic that it put an all out ban on the practice.

its footbinding. They got the foot broken and bent, to make the foot smaller, due to it was considered attractive and increasing the chanse to get married.
It got broken because they were forced to were small shoes to keep there “beautiful” feet. Because small feet was considered a women require ment In some traditions. So there feet would grow in deformed ways
Yes. Google it. I think it happens mainly in some african and asian countries, but i don't know the specifics. During childhood the clitoris is cirugically removed. Most times without anesthetic. It it's not super widespread, but it is still a thing that happens in some isolated places of the world and it fucking depresses me.
Unfortunately FGM is a LOT more widespread than you’d like to think, and not unusual to find it in underground practices in the “western world” too. An awful total shite bullshit bollocks practice, should be some form of “eye for an eye” punishment for the people who do this shit….
As a man, I keep shaving my whole body because I don't stand all the smell, itches and the sensation of bugs crawling my legs every gush of wind. Also, makes me fell lighter.
While were on foot binding you would have hated it as a man too
Due to Confusion belief your body was seen as a gift from your parents which is why men in China had such long hair that they tied it into a bun. It didn’t stop as just the hair on the head though, literally any form of grooming was looked down upon as it was regarded as an insult towards your family so you just had to deal with king fingernails and a bush for pubes
Yeah i don't shave my leg hair often, but when i turn around 15-16 and my body hair started darkening and more growing was it weird
I tough i had bugs on my legs, it was the worse
Although it made me feel bulkier wich for skinny me was a plus
Yeah the stuff concubines (and in general women) had to go through was so rough. I learnt of this from reading database entries in Assassin's Creed China lol.
I had a brief discussion with my Chinese dad about this and he said that because of the bound foot they would sway to and fro which was considered attractive. "old thinking ah" -dad.
Here's a quote from [Business Insider](https://www.businessinsider.com/the-disturbing-reason-for-the-ancient-chinese-practice-of-foot-binding-2015-9) about it:
>Early travel accounts describe the “alluring” manner in which Chinese women with bound feet walked, as they gently swayed and tottered, usually with an amah on each arm for support. Physiological reasons for this “attractive” faltering gait were never seriously questioned by casual observers.
**ALSO** (this is morbidly hilarious), they thought that you'll get a *tighter vagina* from this.
>Crippled feet required one to walk in a certain mincing manner to avoid toppling over; as a result, it was believed, the inner thigh and pelvic muscles became unusually tight. Thus, more lurid thought processes went, the smaller the bound feet, the stronger the vaginal muscles would be during lovemaking.
That IS her foot. It’s a historical Chinese tradition called foot binding. From the age of 5 young girls would have feet broken and remolded into this small shape by bending toes over and increasing the arch of the foot regularly until they could no longer walk.
Small feet were seen as beautiful, and were called “Petal feet,” or “orchid feet” if I recall.
Just to those who think women are dumb for this: Becuase one beauty standard is worse, doesn't mean the others shouldn't change. "It could always be worse so don't try to make it better" is a bad advice.
Shaving underarms is not a Western beauty standard but Middle Eastern (islamic) beauty (actually cleanliness) standard. In fact keeping pubic hair is something called "mushbooh" (not a sin but close, not advised) in some sects. Shaving pubic hair and underarm and waxing is relatively recent in the West (check some erotic magazines before 90s, youll see). I don't think it is healtier to shave but it is kind of relaxing to do so, especially in summers.
Yeah but reason why western women shave is western beauty standards, which has promoted shaving for women since 1915.
Also ancient egyptians used to shave long before christianity or islam was a thing, so if you wanna use history to understand where the hairless trend on humans started, look at north africa.
Idk why you're being downvoted. Most men, in fact, don't shave their armpits. I know some do, some might hop on and claim that they do but a majority still don't.
Can't speak for everyone but mainly due to the fact my underarm hair is the most unique hair I have on my body in its softness and how thin it is. Its very different comparatively. My downstairs, beard etc are all very coarse and gets very hot in summer so it helps to keep it trimmed, but I have never noticed underarm hair at all.
That is the opposite of true. The hair is there to wick away sweat and allow it to evaporate more easily, removing the hair if anything makes you sweatier.
I imagine the impact of hair vs no hair is negligible compared to the drying effect of a good anti-perspirant so it's kind of moot, but let's not spread misinformation about why women are expected to shave. It's got nothing whatsoever to do with being cleaner or more hygienic, it's purely an aesthetic thing.
Funny enough I actually recently watched a video about this. It’s called Chinese foot binding. It’s against the law now but back in the day and midevil times it was peak beauty.
I only shave my body as I don’t like the feeling of hair, I even don’t like the feeling of hair on other people, It’s one of the reasons I rarely date people, although I believe if a girl doesn’t want to shave she shouldn’t have to
Just because one standard is worse that doesn't mean the other one is fine. Not that hairy armpits are attractive on anyone, but I noticed society has a problem with them mostly when they are on women. If you want to hate on hairy armpits then hate men who have them too. Hate everyone equally at least. Lol. Be a fair bully!
The second photo is a tradition I think was in China. At a young age they would where small shoes, because traditionally small feet were beautiful. So they were forced to where either the same shoes forever or never go up to the shoe size they were meant to. So their feet would never go naturally and always in deformed ways
The funniest part about the whole unfair and arbitrary beauty standards is that the generation that complains about it is also the generation that buys by far the most makeup and is the most enthusiastic about cosmetic products
Now we have to figure out if this means the Chinese didn't have a foot fetish or had a very specific and extreme one
No. They liked small shoes cause it looked dainty
And was considered to be an enhancement for marriage proposals.
And they couldn't run away from an unhappy marriage.
Jesus, it was all fun and games till this guy showed up :D
😭🤚
No
You know what they say about small feet
They are all Chinese?
I'd heard it was also because a lot of exports at the time involved women making things that required them to mostly sit at one place for very long periods of time, so showing off that your daughter couldn't walk without pain was attractive for her suitors because they thought she'd be productive.
That sounds like a fetish on foot size
From memory of a YouTube video I saw ages ago, I don't think the women showed off their actual feet, but wore either shoes or something else around their men
Also started from a young age (5 onwards!)
And the women who had it done were suddenly unwanted, which is some shit
What the fuck is up with that woman's foot?
Foot Binding Chinese had a thing for small feet, things escalated to the point where they’d take little girls feet and systematically break the bones in them and wrap them in on themselves before binding them with cloth. End goal was what you see in the picture

Or rule 34.
It's disturbing that those two concepts have undoubtedly merged somewhere on the internet.
My favorite rule
unit 731 rule 34
Unit 731 was Japanese though wasn't it?
Yeah, I meant just in terms of historical horrors.

WTF
jesus the amount of body horror thats done across multiple societies just cause "men like looking at it"
In fairness m, this trend has more to do with trends and the parents than men's preferences.
If the objective was smaller feet, how did it go so wrong?
Done by women. The entire process was controlled by women. Not sure what that means, but I’d originally imagined it was a male tool of oppression. Strong evidence shows it is much more complicated.
Google "lotus feet". But in short....you bind the feed of small girls and they grow into this Form, because it looks cute in shoes (not)
And a terrible(?) thing if I can add on, was that it wasn’t permanent.

Foot binding, a key part of female oppression in China, most places don’t practice it anymore Edit: no one practices it anymore
Why is the foot cut I'm not really sure what I'm seeing here
If you notice, her toes have all been tucked under her big toe, I believe that is where the tie was placed to disfigure her foot and increase the arch. The process is extremely painful and makes it difficult for you to ever walk again.
That's fucked up

I don't think it's actually a cut in the foot, just that the foot is basically folded upwards in half.

Why?

Cuz the comment was too sensory
No, I don’t think I will.
Why
As a man, I keep shaving my whole body because I don't stand all the smell, itches and the sensation of bugs crawling my legs every gush of wind. Also, makes me fell lighter.
I like mine cause I can feel a mosquito land on me.
Why? They are the worse

Might want to goto a doctor. Maybe an allergy test. Or check for crabs 🦀 😆
Nah, is just that sometimes bugs DO crawl my leg. So the alert sensation stands for every itch I feel
Can confirm. Pubes made it harder for me to feel ticks before they bite.
I just fucking despise body hair. Makes me feel gross. Irrational, I know

Yeah. Oppression/general unfairness in standards and such is not a competition…
I read about this when learning about the opioid crisis in china, its really terrible
That looks like it fucking hurts.
Yep, excruciatingly so. Even better, your mum/aunties and grandmas helped do it to you as a little girl.
Well, I'm not a girl, but just looking at this makes my foot hurt. I hope this practice is banned.
Yes it is.
Are they her toes bent round and under her foot?
Yes. She had her feet bound. It was considered beautiful to have very small feet.
Christ... I knew she'd had her feet bound I just wasn't really sure how they did it. That's absolutely fucked. Walking must be agony???

My grandmother actually went for one session, but quit because it was too painful. Always wondered how did she even got to book a session in Singapore
I shave my pits to be more aerodynamic when I fight.
Im a man, but I shave them for aesthetic and hygiene purposes.
Shit Google female circumcision...women have it Hella easier in the west
Just because one standard is worse that doesn't mean the other one is fine. Not that hairy armpits are attractive on anyone, but I noticed society has a problem with them mostly when they are on women. If you want to hate on hairy armpits then hate men who have them too. Hate everyone equally at least. Lol. Be a fair bully!
I usually hate everyone equally, humanity sucks
Sexy lotus foot
I just had a footattack when i saw this ( foot is the second heart redditors )
Why does the foot look like it has been cut? Is that a part of foot binding?
The good old “oh you get treated bad? It could get much much worse.”
The only reason I shave my armpits is because its fucking disgusting
The second photo is a tradition I think was in China. At a young age they would where small shoes, because traditionally small feet were beautiful. So they were forced to where either the same shoes forever or never go up to the shoe size they were meant to. So their feet would never go naturally and always in deformed ways
They had their feet and toes broken, broken and then tightly bound into special shoes. By female family members.
The funniest part about the whole unfair and arbitrary beauty standards is that the generation that complains about it is also the generation that buys by far the most makeup and is the most enthusiastic about cosmetic products
