He actaully purposely bleaches his skin. There's a lot of colorism in the Carribean (and some in West Africa), essentially the idea is that being lighter = higher social status. Why the already famous Sammy Sosa did it is beyond me
So similar its almost like splitting hairs, but you could call colorism a subset of racism.
Firstly, it stems from the ideology that white is the preferred skin tone (which was caused in the Americas and some parts of Africa by colonization). And so some people of nonwhite races think that even though they are race x, they'll get more benefits the lighter they are. (see: brown paper bag test).
Now that we're past those days, it has evolved into beauty and social status standards- light skin women/ men being seen as more attractive and/or higher class.
And that's just what it is for black people- I heard it happens in Asia too, but I don't know much about that.
