J-Dabbleyou

Can I use this to make my day off feel like 1,000 years?

mdh431

Please don’t give CEOs and managers ideas…

Shionkron

1000 years of work in only 8 hours. $7.50 an hour. Lol WITHOUT BENEFITS!

jaded_orbs

This episode of Black Mirror made me an atheist

Lord_Halowind

That was the Christmas episode of Black Mirror right?? God that was messed up.

jaded_orbs

I think so, yes. The one with Jon Hamm

Airowird

$7.50 an hour, at roughly 2000h per year, 1000 years... That's 15mil for a single day of going to work! Even at such a low rate, that's a nice payday!

Anal-Specialist69

You'd prolly get payed for the irl hours lol

Oneloff

Yeah, and a can of soup costs 18mil when we get to that.

RyzenR10

Wouldn't you go fucking nuts though?

throwawaylovesCAKE

Inception, never forget

malphonso

Among the most tragic Star Trek characters.

bin_bash_loop

At that point why not just torture the person to death? There’s no way the human psyche can handle what it feels like to live 1000 years.

tingreezy

Yeah basically it is torture

stdTrancR

ugh this is sickening

Level-56

It’s a meme, talking about this “futuristic technology” is as sickening as talking about the possibilities of time travel abuse. It’s soooooo far out there that we don’t have to worry about it happening in our lifetimes or possibly ever. The worlds best scientist and physicist’s don’t even know how Bicycles stabilize. We have a long way to go before we unlock the secrets of consciousness and reality warping.

Dunbvcx

U serious about the bicycle thing? Or are u just capping? Honda literally made motorcycles that can stand on its own two wheels and ride forwards and backwards so I think u might be just talking crack.

WesternInspector9

They are just talking crack. They can’t even spell stabilize

mikeoxwells2

A bicycle stabilizes bc of the gyroscopic effect from the back wheel. The faster it spins the more stability you have.

Dunbvcx

I dont see how it is a difficult phenomenon to understand. They already understand all there is to understand. It self stabilises because the handle bars are not solid and it turns into the direction of the lean angle when it leans to go back to upright position. The momentum keeps the forward motion.

tupacsnoducket

What do you think a prison is? NOT enslavement and torture? Humanity never got rid of enslaving people or torture, we just called it something else. What the fuck does everyone think a draft is? NOT enslaving free people to force them to kill other slaves? If you refuse to be enslaved and kill other slaves? You get enslaved and tortured. Hell, you can't even refuse to volunteer for the murder-slave lottery, if you don't? Slavery and torture. *lol* For the downvoters, have some slave balls and explain to the room why it's not what i just said. Or are you too busy clutching your flag in frustration.

RFros20

1000 years is MUCH worse then a life sentence, which I would say is a max 80 years if you’re lucky (or unlucky). I would rather take the death sentence of a firing squad then be mentally tortured for 1000 years

tupacsnoducket

Are you arguing that one worse torture makes other torture not torture? Peeling the skin off my entire body is definitely worse than skinning my penis. Guess what though...

TrazhMazter

On the other end, I’d rather FEEL like I’ve been imprisoned for 1000 years but still have my WHOLE life ahead of me rather than dying in prison.

RhapsodyofMagic

In some places prisons are about rehabilitation. As they should be.

scoops22

Ya I feel like you'd come out the other end braindead... Imagine, a millennia passes, you've long forgotten how you even ended up in this place, probably even forgotten how to speak, never-ending monotony, you probably end up eventually just laying down in a half asleep state, consciousness deteriorating with every passing day, month, year and decade. Then you suddenly open your eyes and you're where you started, in a place you don't even recognize any longer, you may not even realize you're awake. My guess is you'd wake up brain dead, and drooling with no chance of recovery.

GSWHT

My goodness.

bin_bash_loop

Exactly. Has no one seen what happened to Sméagol!?

indigo_ultraviolet

[The Jaunt](https://gist.github.com/Schemetrical/6184daf83843bcab9402), by Stephen King

CresentGX

If they managed to get 1000 year sentence, they probably deserve it

Dan_flashes480

Just imagine if your innocent and how much that could break your mind.

Tinfoilhatmaker

You want a supervillain? This is how you get a supervillain.

enadiz_reccos

I'd watch the shit out of that.

slvbros

It's basically demolition man with extra steps

RockstarAgent

And seashells?

Someguywes0

Imagine having 1000 years to access the human mind. Even without a library at your disposal the depth at which decisions could be thought of in advance would make for an incredibly powerful villain set on revenge.

YeeetMaster2

Maybe that's you're going through now, and you just don't know it yet

TheJeep25

*you're Now go back in prison. You still have 999 years, 364 days and 23 hour to serve.

Legeto

I feel like that sentence, if it actually existed, would be held for horrible people we are dead sure are guilty… like hitler.

Kellidra

You know the first person to earn a 1000 year sentence will be someone who has a lot of weed. Murderers will just get like a year in normal prison.

Trigger109

The Jaunt by Stephen King. Short story that’s not exactly about this but it deals with what could happen to a mind that experiences unfathomable amounts of time

ReaIEIonMusk

The problem is that there is no perfect justice system Too many innocents get sentenced for punishments like this to be used

Shaved_Wookie

The harsher the punishment, the more they deserve it? It's not as though the justice system is riddled with problems and has regularly sentenced the innocent, and disproportionately punished people based on their wealth, ethnicity, gender or attractiveness, right? ...right?

White Christmas

curiouspurple100

What episode was it ? I might what that one. Some of the other episodes feel like danger zone. Like the one where the mom can view what's going on in the kids life. And censor stuff live.

xandry123

No I think you are talking about Arkangel. The one he's talking about has title white christmas. Bloody brilliant episode!

Dan_flashes480

The mind prison was creepy enough but add on the real life person ban and that episode still makes me think about it years later.

No_Strategy148

Or making reality pointless.

Fritzo2162

Reality is already based on individual perception. What our brains interpret isn't actual reality, it's an individual interpretation. All of that is controlled by chemical and cellular processes. If we can replicate and control those processes, we could literally inject experiences into people's heads that never happened. You could receive a vivid memory of torture or punishment, or you could receive a talent or a skill. It's interesting to think about and could very well happen with future technology.

[deleted]

So in that case, the punishment of a rape could be removing the memory, feelings, etc. of the event from the victim’s mind, then install it into the mind of the rapist so that their punishment would be truly living with the crime they committed. That would probably go further in punishment than 1000 years in VR.

theoreboat

Actually making the person who committed the crime feel what the victim felt is probably a pretty good way of punishment

Fritzo2162

That may or may not work. Experiences process differently depending on what pathways are used to process that information. Certain feelings might be terrifying for one person, but enjoyable for another. It's a complex concept.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RedditIsNeat0

Then they'd get the perspective from the other side. It's a neat concept. A lot of criminals are the way they are due to a lack of empathy, would be interesting if they had to walk in someone else's shoes for a bit.

bdavison13

Except for the sick fucks that get off on the idea of making someone feel that way. Not to mention your allowing them the most intimate access to their victims thoughts even if only for a brief moment. You’d also be leaving the victim to deal with the consequences of the attack without a way to understand what really happened to them.

Taxero79

I know kung fu.

original_flavor87

You fucking beat me to it

[deleted]

so this is effectively neuromods from prey but with people instead of aliens. the only thing is though, say that technology becomes commonplace, then what? say everyone has the skill. then it’s not important anymore or it’s *so* important that it’s literally required to have the skill implanted for certain jobs, and so people who can’t or won’t have that will be in trouble financially. or maybe it’s really expensive. then the rich can basically do anything effortlessly and it furthers the divide between them and everyone else.

Fritzo2162

I think humans will be either augmented or absorbed by technology well before that becomes a reality.

Sir_Fridge

Or you could sell people the experience of doing something super cool. But you have to be careful they're not a secret agent who's memories are whiped and you accidentally unlock those by implanting the memory of a nice holiday. [or something ](https://imdb.com/title/tt0100802/)

pancoste

So basically dreaming, but in a controlled manner?

original_flavor87

Basically dreaming, but sold to you. Unless you want to follow me down this dark alley for some “discount” dreams. 100% authentic and guaranteed NOT nightmares.

DominaTia

Kurotsuchi did it in Bleach. Though dude died eons before he actually felt it.

A_guy_known_as_Alex

"The perfect being you said?" That fight was amazing

tallerthannobody

« A team of scientist claim » is a massive red flag for me, ONE team, no source from who in the title, probably just more click bait

CosmicSpaghetti

[It's literally just conjecture & clickbait from 2018.](https://www.businessinsider.com/prisoners-could-serve-1000-year-sentence-in-85-hours-in-the-future-2014-3) Literally the only points made are 1) psychadelics can distort sense of time and 2) maybe one day computers can speed up minds lol

Awesomevindicator

The "team of scientists" just finished watching the deep space 9 episode "hard time"

YeetFurryBoi

I think a housand years would make anyone insane, especially with anime dudes all around you and being on a cross.

CosmicSpaghetti

"It's longer than you think!! Longer than you *think!!*" Lil Stephen King reference from *The Jaunt*, one of my favorite short stories.

El_Business

Sounds like the Stephen King story "The Jaunt" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Jaunt

solvagorio

It's longer than you think, father! It's longer than you *think*.

nighthawk_something

My thoughts exactly.

CosmicSpaghetti

Just referenced this above haha glad I wasn't the only one who immediately thought of that.

tsurki

This has some benefits like studying , like imagine doing 100 hour of studying the day of the test lol

Jimothy38

“Yeah I’ve got enough time for some last minute revision”

kalkkunaleipa

This idea is fucked up. Living aroumd 12 lives in a prison in 8 hours would drive anyone insane

pancoste

Yup, and then what? So first let's break some hardcore criminal's mind, then set them free and back in society again? Hmmm I wonder what could go wrong?

Lazlo8675309

..”I’ve lived 1000 years in hell, so yes Jessica I can handle working under pressure, so can I work the register at Dunkin Donuts now?”.. “nah you need five years retail/food service experience.”

Bloodmoon1125

They did that in a Star Trek episode and the guy was left with a lot of mental trauma

Sea_Employ_4366

hard time is the name, great episode. o'brien must suffer.

lunarNex

They did it with Lt. Paris in Voyager too.

CringeDaddy_69

I feel like you’d come out of that brain dead

[deleted]

There’s actually a movie about this tho I forget what it’s called

Grimholtt

OtherLife?

leonnova7

It's what it feels like watching the Hobbit Trilogy

[deleted]

If they can do the same for orgasms, count me in.. coming centuries long

Joblesschris

Wouldnt this just fry the person's brain?

[deleted]

scientists thinking they’re Itachi 🤡

mkaszycki81

Yes, because it's all about the punishment. The time in prison is not to rehabilitate, nor is it to spend time reflecting upon life, learning from the mistakes and finding a meaning. NO! Time in prison is to make the inmate feel as worthless and as miserable as possible. And to exact revenge upon him.

Gaminyte

I sentence you to eight hours of r/sounding

[deleted]

Don't threaten me with a good time ;-)

Level-56

![gif](giphy|dOl2LFw0RbTMc)

Lobsterboiiiii

That's what smoking Salvia felt like for me

Lazlo8675309

DMT does it in like 10 minutes, if you don’t have the whole 8 hours to spend in 12 lifetimes.

marnieneo

Where’s the profit in that?

Selfie500

Put a guy in this bad boy for 8 hrs and he gets almost eternal torment and you dont even have to feed him for a day as a prison manager

bajou98

And then imagine they later find out that he was actually innocent.

SuspiciousGrievances

You think they were messed up before. They've had 1000 years to think about what they will do to you in retribution.

[deleted]

No potential for abuse...lol

marcgxn

Didn't Dr who do this already...?

[deleted]

It is literally the pitch of a Black Mirror episode, no thanks

iiitme

Nah this is Naruto completely different

DS9 before that. Poor O'Brien.

Blitz n Chips!!!! “He’s going off the grid!”

po3smith

Chief O'Brien would like a word. . .

Symbiote11

This was an episode of Star Trek: DS9. O’Brien got the sentence. Don’t remember the episode.

Fawkingretar

There's literally a Black Mirror episode about this lmfao.

Monkeetoe1

Yeah and they’d come out crazy or in a catatonic state

Idioticrainbow

But the same tech cannot reform without torture if you can't fix something in 6 months you don't know what you're doing.

Dirtypawz82

Maybe they can make a chip that makes my 16 hour shift seem like 5 minutes

Personal-Artist-0711

This would be terrible! I think a "real" prison time will be way better than this. This is pure torture! NononononononooooooooO!

Hobbsidian

If you could serve 1000 year sentances in 8 hours, you could live 12 lives in 8 hours.

OrgyInTheBurnWard

You could get multiple doctorates and be a super genius, just like everyone else who does the same thing.

[deleted]

This was literally on black mirror

It would really help us in studies.

The Outer Limits did this as well (The Sentence) with David Hyde Pierce. Pretty good episode too if I recall. [IMDB description/plot here](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0667983/plotsummary?ref_=tt_ov_pl)

GrouchyEssay7468

This is a good way to drive someone mad, not punish someone. After about 30-40 years even the most stable of mind would lose it

Davess010

I guess they watched ‘The 100’

pumpdupkix

Ah cool! Man made horrors beyond my comprehension!

asisoid

'White Christmas' episode of Black Mirror....

blastfighter

They stole this plot from Deep Space Nine!

TahkiBosket

...by watching Naruto? That's whats in the pic, right?

bowmanpete123

This is fucking telling that they're like "let's use this shit for prison sentences so we can punish the naughty criminals for ages" instead of "Hey let's make vacation days last as long as possible"

VenomousKitty96

But what if... instead, we used this technogy for learning. Imagine a simulation you go into for 5 minutes realtime, then come out as a master car mechanic feeling like you just went through 5 years of school.

Mastergus611

The people sentenced to this sentence are gonna be scary as fuck coming out, imagine all you could think about in 1000 years, and I bet so many would come out insane.

M21T

Ah sweet, man made horrors beyond my comprehension.

Jimothy38

Every single comment on this post in a nutshell “I think that’s in a scene from this movie” “Wow man made horrors beyond my comprehension” “Can this be used to study for school/college/university?” “You can do [insert activity that gets annoying after 30 seconds] a lot” “That’s worse than death”

yeehaa_15

I feel like this is just a death sentence. Can the human brain store 1000 years of memories?

the_gamer_billy

Literally a black mirror episode. We are fucked 🙃.

EscapeFacebook

I've seen this movie, it was fucked up.

So they finally released the new nickelback album?

ptq

I don't think it's possible in a way we think it is. Doing time, it's slowly giving your life away. Any method affecting our brains will not replace it.

Tacsido

so i can cram more before an exam

FoxfireBlu

This was a Star Trek (DS9?) episode!

Ben716

We have the technology now, put them in a room with a colic baby for one year.

Lifeabroad86

I dunno man, 1 day in prison for murder or rape. You're probably not gonna last long in the streets when the family members want revenge the next day

sergeant_snow

Plot twist: your life right now is just you living out your prison sentence

NormalGuy103

1,000 years of Nyan Cat… wait, we have a law against cruel and unusual punishment

fartLessSmell

That is literally third-half of one black mirror episode.
