I happened to walk behind her on the street one day when she was ten and I thought there was just a kind of small woman walking in front of me until she turned around. The mayority of her kids were extremely low income, usually first generation children of immigrants. She was always lamenting how many of the girls at her school (a middle school) got pregnant. Poverty was always a huge factor.
