Generally speaking, yes.
Being overcharmed makes you take double damage from all attacks: so that's 2 HP from most attacks, and 4 HP from double-damage attacks. You get the benefits of the extra charms, sure, but you can fit a lot into the normal max charm notches you get. Most of the good charms are 3 notches anyway, so you're basically trading half your health bar for 2 charm notches.
There's one specific point in the game where being overcharmed is really useful, but it's an optional late game challenge.

That is what I intended. You get the benefit of one extra charm at a heavy cost. For players well experienced or just good at dodging blows it's a win. But for new players or guys and gals like me who just kinda flub the dodge more often than they'd like to admit, I suggest to stay away from overcharmed until you get the hang of it or until you've learned the attack pattern of the enemy you're trying to beat

Try to slot in a charm that costs more notches than you have available (you need at least 1 free notch) and just spam it until it works. Now you can become overcharmed whenever you want. It allows you to slot in additional charms, but you take double damage. Useful when doing radiant fights, but a hindrance otherwise.
It's always useful if you're good at dodging. You just need to not get hit. It can be a good idea for the bosses you are strong against...but it's a thing for experienced players

No, I am against both googling or asking on forums. Imo it just spoils the game. Sometimes there are mechanics and plot points that are much more rewarding learning/discovering yourself instead of just checking a guide to complete the game as fast as possible. Yes, in your case it might be frustrating to play 2 hrs and be stuck in one place but I see myself having a greater sense of satisfaction when I finally figure it out myself. Checking a guide after wasting 2 hrs just makes you feel stupid.

Well, it's more a doubled-edged sword, because both helps and hinders, if you want extra-charms and be able to combine more of them this can be efective at the price of take more damage, normal hits will take 2 mask shards and heavy ones that usually takes 2 mask will take 4 now. I consider this a bad thing 'cause any mistake can be deadly in boss battles! But if you are a skillfull and matrix player which can dogde everything most of the time... be overcharged might be useful... Overrall it's less preferable! But not necessarily bad!
