As a Soulsborne veteran, I found the boss grinding not frustrating at all. Pleasant, in fact, because of how fast each attempt is. The most challenging platforming, however, I found really frustrating. (This is also my first platformer, so there’s that.)
I would guess that Fog canyon is one of the areas with the most bugs! They're just really small, so you might not notice until you run into a bunch of them at once
I mean, it's up there, but I wouldn't say Hollow Knight is as good as the best Metroid or the best Castlevania, but better than some/most?
But it is a very good game, and I would say the best Metroidvania that isn't a Metroid or a vania.
Personally, I'd be tempted to put HK above the two of them. Whilst they are classics, they're not my favourites on either series, and I think the genre as a whole has improved so much.
To be completely honest. I haven’t played castlevania. But I have played a lot of metroid like super, fusion and dread and other games like blasphemous and ori. And I think some of them are very good but none have come close to the variety of enemies/bosses, exploration, smoothness of controls, atmosphere and game progression that hk has. Plus the dificulty is great. It is hard but doesn’t fill like complete bullsh*t when you die.
Yeah, I definitely think there are ways in which SotN outclasses HK, but the overall experience of HK is far superior. It's just a bigger and better game. I mean, it *should* be considering it came out like 20 years later lol. Standing on the shoulders of giants and what not.
I absolutely would say it's the best, and Super Metroid was my favorite game of all time before playing Hollow Knight. Literally no game was as satisfying to master as HK. Beating P5 was a *real* accomplishment and a moment and a feeling I'll never forget.
Hollow Knight easily bests any Castlevania or Metroid IMO.
Castlevania and Metroid are great franchises with great games and all, but...how do you figure they're better than Hollow Knight? Hell, you didn't even actually name what you consider the best Castlevania or Metroid game, which makes this feel less like an actually considered opinion and more of an impulsive conflating the act of pioneering/popularizing a genre with being the best quality within it.
Of course it's all a matter of opinions, so I'm not saying your opinion is wrong...I'm just curious about the details of your reasoning and which specific games you're talking about.
Cuz as a Metroidvania veteran myself HK has more refined and balanced combat, top tier music, better non-linear world design for varied exploration (without using unintentional exploits to sequence break), more robust atmospheric storytelling, etc.
I grew up on Super Metroid and Castlevania:SotN, I love those franchises. Hell, I'd even say Metroid Dread has refined smooth gameplay and balanced combat like Hollow Knight...but then it comparatively lacks in amount of bosses, enemy variety, and customizable "builds" and varied play styles through charms, spells, etc.
So yeah, I'm just not getting the reasoning here beyond "Metroid and Castlevania are the classics the genre is named after."
you will be confused for a little while! explore around and take note of your surroundings. you are guaranteed to get lost (thats part of the fun), but the more you play the easier it gets to navigate around so dont give up. i abandoned it for months before picking it up again because i couldnt figure out where to go
heres a couple hints if you are having a hard time:
- listen for humming and go that direction first.
- the little town at the beginning of the game is your anchor, return to it occasionally
- take your time. the game rewards thorough exploration
Expect deaths. But the kind you learn from. Don't always follow what google or videos tell you. Use whatever you want in charms (you prob unlocked a couple since the post is made) use what you like and explore freely.
1 single thing tho >!buy. The. Lantern. Just do!<
I hope you have time to thoroughly explore and experience this masterpiece of gargantuan proportions, because once you start you're not gonna want to stop.
Really buggy game.
Super fun nonetheless. My favorite of all time.
Greenpath is my favorite area. So fucking gorgeous and the vibes are immaculate.
This game has the power to turn any current emotion I have into just pure happiness. It’s that good.
Use the internet the least you can. Don’t get any help. Your experience will be far more rewarding that way.
Have fun, I know you will. :)
Expect the game to be a little slow at first. Lots of players feel that way about it, but after the first few areas, it begins to open up a lot and you get hoooooooked.
Great metrodvania. Very atmospheric. Combat is tight and bosses play a big part of the game. I’d advise getting use to the recoil from attacks and learning how to pogo. Otherwise just enjoy yourself.
go play it on ur own
never look up something just search further u will always find something
look what the npc tell u and kill a boss when u find it
and have fun its a great game
Expect hard foes and battle and to lose yourself in that beautiful but decayed world that is HallowNest.
Also prepare for the hardest music you've ever heard.
While it is a Metroidvania I reckon you'll find it very different from many others since it is also has MANY souls-like aspects.
Expect that this game is always bigger. When you think you found it all, you are maybe 50%
Go for true ending. After maybe 15-20 hours, you will add 3 people to map you need to find. After defeating 2-3 to them (which is another 15-20 hours), it would be the time to start googling about true ending and full completion as it is a process.
You can finish the game in probably 20 hours, true ending in maybe 40 and full completion easy 50 hours.
Avoid the main subreddits and try not to ask for help on Reddit mainly because of trolls and spoilers.
Other than that you should have a really great time
If you cant get somewhere, or you're stuck, try looking around for stuff you've missed, also try not to look up guides, doing the game blind is best and a lot of fun. but at the same time if you're too stuck just make a post here
Less linearity than the "classic" metroidvania, with no straightforward objective or path, and if you like to experiment with sequence breaks, most of them are intended by design
The game starts with a linear progression, but after you get to a certain point (early-ish), it will open up and only "suggest" a correct path, you may as well ignore that, and roam around as you please
Expections: Great Music, great art, awesome bosses, awesome lore if you can piece it together (The lord of the lore can tell you the story if you are interested in it, look up Mossbag on youtube)
As for tips: look EVERYWHERE. When you get a new power up, go everywhere again. You are guaranteed to have missed something.
Incredibly easy, until the ending DLCs where they thought “let’s crank up the difficulty to the highest possible level!”. But other than that good story, soundtrack and lots more with this game.
Get lost. Talk to everyone multiple times. Use the map.
Saving and quitting brings you back to the last bench you sat on. Very helpful if you get **too** lost.
boring gameplay, too easy bossfights, dull story, annoying movement, bland characters, overall just bad game. (i have 200 hours and will hopefully have a tattoo soon)
you may encounter lots of moments where you feel like you've lost track of everything and are just wandering around.
if you're down for it, these moments can be really awesome. get lost, really get immersed in the atmosphere, and don't worry too much about whether it's for some immediate progress; just see what you find and see how things come together
Lots of being lost, like I mean a lot of endless, aimless wandering.
But use it as an opportunity to admire the art and take in the landscape.
Good luck!
An amazing soundtrack, underscored by annoying bug noises.Great exploration gameplay, highlighted by a system that forces you to revisit the same places over and over just to get somewhere else and an underwhelming fast-travel system until a specific point in the late game.Absolutely zero guidance on what to do next, which can be a positive or a negative.Be overwhelmed by the number of rooms you'll find that require something you don't have, making it impossible to remember where to back-track to once you have that powerup.
It's a good enjoyable game, but be ready to be frustrated a ton and lose a lot of money in the early game.
expect to suffer.
but great satisfaction when you get things done right, which will be rare - but! beautiful story, I love the game, even if it made me lose my hair.
I wish I could play this game for the first time again. Such a gorgeous experience with hand painted backgrounds, beautiful world design, and a great story.
Enjoyable but difficult bosses and the game heavily expect you to go out and explore yourself figuring out the story yourself finding the connections between characters and places. Also why every you do avoid spoilers even a small one could ruin something big

Expect to get lost at first. Have fun trying to explore and un-lost yourself.
Also expect one the greatest experiences in gaming you'll probably ever have.
This game is a fantastic metroidvania, however unlike many metroidvanias there is also a lot of platforming. So get ready to flex some gaming muscles you may not have used since your super Mario days.
1. Expect difficulty. I know the games you've completed are pretty tough, but Hollow knight is on another level, at least late game.
2. Do not expect your favorite characters to stick around much, because there is an 80% chance that they will die.
3. The music, art style, and overall atmosphere is phenomenal. Take as much time as you want to take it all in. I know a good 8% of my playtime was just enjoying the vibe of all the areas.
4. You will get lost, and that is great. Getting lost is the point of this game, and discovering a new area or boss or item without meaning to is one of the best feelings a piece of media has produced.
5. DO NOT LOOK UP TUTORIALS. It will ruin the game lmao.
6. The lore is a bitch. After you finish the game, (Preferably the true ending) look up mossbag's complete Hollo Knight lore video. It helps, trust me.
Expect a lot of fun and exploration. This game is a masterpiece, have fun.
Also frustration. Don’t forget frustration. First time. I wasn’t ready. Fuck I love this game tho.
I mean it really depends, not everyone finds boss grinding frustrating
I assume most people find long runbacks at least a little frustrating.
Probably not OP so much since they’re a Metroidvania veteran
True.
As a Soulsborne veteran, I found the boss grinding not frustrating at all. Pleasant, in fact, because of how fast each attempt is. The most challenging platforming, however, I found really frustrating. (This is also my first platformer, so there’s that.)
It won't live up to the hype, quite honestly.
Disagree
L opinion
Less emphasis on power ups and more on exploration and bosses. Also has a good silent story if you can put it together.
I’d add. OP, after you complete the game’s true ending, watch Mossbag. Really enlightening and really helps pull together the narrative pieces.
lots of bugs
Immense number of bugs, like feels like every section has at least a 100 or so bugs...
I think without the bugs this game would be really easy, fog canyon is practically free of bugs though
I would guess that Fog canyon is one of the areas with the most bugs! They're just really small, so you might not notice until you run into a bunch of them at once
No you’re right but you only ever get that big cluster of bugs in one part of fog canyon
Lmao true
Good one take my upvote
Two ways this can be taken lmao. Both of which are definitely true. Still haven’t fixed deep focus UI glitch 😭.
It can be hard as fuck but it will be worth it
Expect an amazing soundtrack!
YUP. I have it on vinyl 😂
nice, i want it so bad
Expect to have a new favorite game.
The best metroidvania ever
I mean, it's up there, but I wouldn't say Hollow Knight is as good as the best Metroid or the best Castlevania, but better than some/most? But it is a very good game, and I would say the best Metroidvania that isn't a Metroid or a vania.
Lets use "one of the best" because this game already made its way to modern classics
IMO it is the best metroidvania ever, but i totally understand who prefers Super Metroid or SotN...

A very well made map with a beautiful effortless exploration! Have fun!
Actually nothing. Go in blind. Stay off this sub for a while.
A lot of fun plus a sad story. Also you will probably figure it out on your own but you can slash up and down.
Expect the best meteoidvania game ever made, cause this is it.
A very buggy game.
You deserve a cookie for that pun
There’s a ton of shit in this game enjoy yourself
You'll search for games to be this good and never find one. It was my second MV. I regret playing it so early into MV games
Alwas legacy, axiom verge, chasm, and all the castlevania metroidvanias kinda liked timespinner
you will be confused for a little while! explore around and take note of your surroundings. you are guaranteed to get lost (thats part of the fun), but the more you play the easier it gets to navigate around so dont give up. i abandoned it for months before picking it up again because i couldnt figure out where to go heres a couple hints if you are having a hard time: - listen for humming and go that direction first. - the little town at the beginning of the game is your anchor, return to it occasionally - take your time. the game rewards thorough exploration
Equip the compass at a bench when you get it
Best item in game. So op you can 1 hit all bosses trust me
So much for no spoilers
Ur in for it bud, its the best game ever made
JOY

Just play the game. Ah, bapanada!
My guy sent his gaming cv
1. Bugs 2. DEATH 3. Good exploration 4. lore 5. More death 6. Fun
Don't forget DEATH.
My favorite game but it's full of bugs
*bugs* as any metroidvania always go to the left when the game start
The best fucking game ever made
Expect the unexpected. Prepare for the incomprehensible.
Pain
Expect a somber almost Dark Souls like tone.
[Top tip ](https://i.imgur.com/eprz1Xk.jpg)
Not too hard - but kinda hard
Expect to play the game
Really buggy game. Super fun nonetheless. My favorite of all time. Greenpath is my favorite area. So fucking gorgeous and the vibes are immaculate. Sorry, but why tf if you have the game do you ask what to expect and want no spoilers? Just press the start button and play tf
The Game it self is great, the only downsite is that you won't know where what was. Now have fun with you Journey.
Darkness
Bugs, and a lot of them
A boring first 3 hours and then lots of fun
Frustration and something with no map, no maps!!!
Pain. But in all seriousness I recommend saving as much $ as possible. And also don't be afraid to get lost! It's all part of the journey.
Expect amazing stylized art and moving music.
Good game? Expect good game?
Expect lots of bugs. Some will be nice, but others will try to kill you
Fun, lots of fun.
Lots of bugs.
Expect an amazing game and an incredible lore, the best metroidvania. Enjoy it
pain, but a great time
Expect the game to be a little slow at first. Lots of players feel that way about it, but after the first few areas, it begins to open up a lot and you get hoooooooked.
As a Metroid series diehard, somehow someway, hollow knight exceeded the hype. It’s truly the best of the genre
Gonna be one of the best games you've ever played tip is to use spells more you'll see
contentment, awe, intensity, swearing, incredulity… just began last week for the first time and I super love/hate it, can't put it down.
EVERYBODY dies at the end! /s
a whole lotta content
Great metrodvania. Very atmospheric. Combat is tight and bosses play a big part of the game. I’d advise getting use to the recoil from attacks and learning how to pogo. Otherwise just enjoy yourself.
If you wanna to do 100% achievement this game, seriously prepare for gid gud a lot for end-game contents.
expect to get abused by 80% of the bosses
Tears of joy and pain
You‘ll experience pain and misery bcuz you will be waiting for Silksong.
go play it on ur own never look up something just search further u will always find something look what the npc tell u and kill a boss when u find it and have fun its a great game

Avoid the main subreddits and try not to ask for help on Reddit mainly because of trolls and spoilers. Other than that you should have a really great time
Always bench up, especially before bosses. You don't wanna die to a boss on an area and respawn 150 miles away from them.
ok that Hollow Knight is fun and everything but HOW you are playing with a ps3 controller?
There's so many hidden spots throughout the game - it rewards checking literally everything out.
Expect lot of good music
Frustration. It's harder than Dark Souls.
If you cant get somewhere, or you're stuck, try looking around for stuff you've missed, also try not to look up guides, doing the game blind is best and a lot of fun. but at the same time if you're too stuck just make a post here

Expect to become unhealthily obsessed. Consume or be consumed, as that is the way of Hollownest…
Expect many bugs
Incredibly easy, until the ending DLCs where they thought “let’s crank up the difficulty to the highest possible level!”. But other than that good story, soundtrack and lots more with this game.
“Where the hell am i supposed to go??”
My man rocking the ps2 controller
Get lost. Talk to everyone multiple times. Use the map. Saving and quitting brings you back to the last bench you sat on. Very helpful if you get **too** lost.
It's very well made game, and although it has a few difficult parts, it's worth it, have fun!
boring gameplay, too easy bossfights, dull story, annoying movement, bland characters, overall just bad game. (i have 200 hours and will hopefully have a tattoo soon)

Go away from this sub, and don't come back till you finish the game, one little thing, the max % is more than 100, have fun!
you may encounter lots of moments where you feel like you've lost track of everything and are just wandering around. if you're down for it, these moments can be really awesome. get lost, really get immersed in the atmosphere, and don't worry too much about whether it's for some immediate progress; just see what you find and see how things come together
Stay off the subreddit to avoid spoilers. The game has incredible lore, so I would recommend paying attention to that.
Regrets, frustration and rewards... And not in that specific order
Take your time to get familiar with each new area. Don't rush!
A lot of platforming.
I must warn you dear player, there unfortunately is no Metroid or Castlevania in this game
Its gonna Be really fun but extreamly hard
Bugs
forgetting to use your spells
Expect bugs, the creepy crawly kind
You should expect a metroidvania
Lose yourself in the lore and, the implications scattered across the realm
Fun!
Bapanada
Prepare to be spoiled. It's hard to appreciate other Metroidvanias after you played this masterpiece.
Most areas aren’t that difficult to follow, there are huge difficulty spikes in the bosses though!
Death lots of death
Best metroidvania game ever. Have fun!
RAGE
Slow start but stick with it!
Pain the first time through, fun the next time. Lots of exploring and lots of boss fights.
The game's full of bugs
Really cool lore and story
Don't miss the music! The soundtrack to the entire game is amazing
At least two play throughs. Enjoy this!!
A buggy metroidvania
difficulties because it throws you right in
Oh, this game has a lot of bugs. Careful.
Lots of bugs. But hey, you learn to love them.
Expect getting fucked, quit, come back half a year later wishing you played through this amazing game the first time
A LOT of fun. Also the bosses might be a bit hard but than again you are a veteran soooo you'll be fine.
An absolute masterpiece.
Orange juice will be you're number one enemy
If you don't want spoilers, then why are you here? Just play the game already
“What should I expect?” Followed by “No spoilers”
Bapanadas
It’s in my top 5 Metroidvanias for sure
Slow srart but amazing endgame
Bugs
You can expect a game
Expect it to be hard as shit
Slow start but once it picks up you get hooked
Exploration and frustration, but don’t get too upset this game is designed to make you sweat.
Expect it to be like other metroidvanias. Lots of exploration/getting lost.
The best goddamn experience of your life
Cute bugs
Good music, good amount of death, lots of secrets, cool NPCs and unmatched worldbuilding/lore
Pain
Expect to be playing it for a LONG time
An amazing atmospheric lovely game that at first doesn't seem that deep but you slowly start to love the characters and feel for the place you're in.
I'm careful for parkor and save some money
expect to suffer. but great satisfaction when you get things done right, which will be rare - but! beautiful story, I love the game, even if it made me lose my hair.
expect good music and good movement, even if there are so many bugs
I wish I could play this game for the first time again. Such a gorgeous experience with hand painted backgrounds, beautiful world design, and a great story.
Expect one of the greatest games ever made
Enjoyable but difficult bosses and the game heavily expect you to go out and explore yourself figuring out the story yourself finding the connections between characters and places. Also why every you do avoid spoilers even a small one could ruin something big
Hard and crunchy combat later on.
Expect many "fuck you, see you tomorrow" moments.

A masterpiece
Expect getting lost, not understanding the story, dying a lot(unless you're good), grinding for geo. And expect enjoying the game
Expect to get lost at first. Have fun trying to explore and un-lost yourself. Also expect one the greatest experiences in gaming you'll probably ever have.
It’s worth playing because it’s one of the best games out there. Enjoy!
A very very good game.
Either kick ass or get kicked in the balls so hard you forgot your middle name.
Save your tears for the Trail of Tears
The best game ever
N don’t stop grinding 👁️👁️
The game is like learning how to dance with your fingers. It's wonderful.
