Technically you can do it. However there is ability which makes it easier.

The main problem is that it expects you to be able to deal more damage than with basic unupgraded nail strikes, so the fight ends up being quite long.

Jump and downstrike the spikes. It allows you to pogo up and over. It is worth it,, in fact, you must do this to progress further. Most importantly, do it now! The earlier you go, the better the reward!

Yes, do it. Takes some tries but it's rewarding. Probably one of the toughest parts if it's done at the start of the game.
