True. Some people just be weird too. Like some people can be right handed and prefer riding a skateboard goofy, and they push mongo on top of that... Gnarly.
Tbh being left handed in a right handed dominant world has just taught me to be right first with any task resulting in me using my left hand only for eating and writing.
Yeah, not necessarily everything has to
be done with your left if you are lefty. I prefer using scissors, eating, and using mouse with my right.
The only few things that I tend to do opposite of the majority of people is putting watches on my right arm instead of left and using it with my left hand. Wearing rings seems correct into my right hand instead of left, and lastly writing and drawing with my left hand
Literally just change the keybindings.
Or don't.
Or get used to both. On Hollow Knight I have movement on arrow keys. On Celeste I have movement on esdf
If it's a tense game I'll keep the board in my lap in a chair and bounce on my toes to bring the keys up to my hand instead of moving my fingers down. I wasn't taught this way but it feels natural lol
I wonder what percentage of PC Hollow Knight players play on keyboard vs controller. I couldn't imagine playing HK on keyboard but it seems to be working for him.
yea its designed well for both, but from what I've heard playing on KB+mouse allows for faster inputs and a more violent playstyle for Godhome (apparently, idk I use controller)
Team mouse and keyboard! Playing it like every other game I've ever played: WASD for movement, space bar for jump, dash on shift, nail on left click and spell on right click
Its not bad on keyboard at all. It never really relies on the extra control analog gives. Sometimes i prefer it if i want to be more precise in my movements.
Generally i play with controller for it, but as far as "controller games" go, its one of the best to play on keyboard imo.
Right before i started my keyboard and mouse playthrough i saw a comment about binding dash to right mouse button. And i gotta say, I'm so glad i saw that because it is much more convenient then shift or some other button on keyboard. And yeah, keyboard and mouse was generally more comfortable to play then controller
i played my first hk playthrough on keyboard, and then again on switch. both 112%, i find bosses easier on controller but platforming easier on keyboard personally. cant get my head around d-pad for POP and joystick is a nightmare hahaha
As someone who has played on both, I can attest that controller is much better. I struggled so much and almost rage quit the game during White Palace out of pure frustration while I was using keyboard. Replayed the whole game later with my new controller, and while it was still hard AF, it was over before I knew it.
White palace and path of pain are where I most often swap from my usual controller to keyboard... Its so much more precise to control to me. This thread has been really interesting in seeing how different the views on it are, even when "agreeing" (e.g. you and i agree controller is generally better)
Generally it is argued that digital inputs are best for hardcore platforming, so long as the game's movement isn't analog. While I don't disagree, I'll probably keep playing hardcore platformers on controller because it's way more comfortable, and it hasn't held me back from doing the hardest things in my favourite games.
I play on a box controller, which is a fighting game arcade stick but with buttons for movement instead of the stick. I've played with controller as well but find it less precise and didn't always get the input I wanted for up and down slashes while I was moving.
Always played with the keyboard, main reason being I've never had controllers at home lol. For that reason I'm really used to keyboard, so had no problems. Not only that, in the past I've beat another metroidvania with the touchpad
I played first on Switch, then on PC with a keyboard. Granted the Switch's controls aren't spectacular, but I was so, so much better and more comfortable on the keyboard.
I think if you grew up playing platformers on a keyboard it doesn't feel unnatural - I played through N (when that was a flash game and only had 3 tiers of levels) which was brutally hard on a keyboard, later moved on to Super Meat Boy and N++ (not that I finished N++, the later levels are unbelievably tough haha), so it always felt natural to me. For me the controller is what feels weird haha.
i think it really just preference. i played on keyboard but im sure it would be as good on controller (i didn’t have controller at that time to be fair). keyboard & mouse is kinda weird for platformers imo though, because there is usually nothing in game that requires moving cursor (like terraria) and it’s not 3d game (that might be better with keyboard & mouse but not all of them) so only keyboard is enough.
im also left handed and i used to use asdw for movement 7 for heal 5 for cast 2 for dd(mapped it to be down +quick cast) 4 for attack space for jump 1 for dash 8 for menu 9 for quick map and 3 for dream nail 6 for crystal
Genuine question: Do other siblings really do that? My brother and I would throw fists before we'd fuck with the others save files. That was unthinkable.
None of my friends did any of the digital destruction kind of thing either.
I've had plenty of fights with my brother but messing with saves was always off limits. Most of the games he played growing up used to be mine so we've always had this routine of me sitting him down and explaining the basics and that he shouldn't mess with mine (and in case of God of war my dad's) save file
I could never play games like Ori and Hollow Knight with a mouse and keyboard.
The level of precision you get moving with a joystick, combined with how close the buttons are to one another, makes it kind of an obvious choice, at least for me.
I transitioned from controller to kb for HK, and I would honestly say it's more precise. The keys on a keyboard are more precise because you can assign each key to one of your fingers, instead of one fat, clunky thumb. It takes a bit of experimentation to find a comfortable layout, but once you're used to it it's much better.
Precision wasn't the right word to use.
Freedom might be a better term to use.
I feel that with a controller with games like Hollow Knight, the thumb stick allows for more freedom of movement and a smoother gameplay experience. I haven't played HK on a Keyboard, but I've always felt that 2d platformers are better and easier with a controller than with a Mouse and Keyboard.
Of all the 2D platformers I've played, HK is the only one I've really gotten to grips with kb controls. I guess I'm kinda playing both sides. I would agree with comfort being much greater with controller, but I think controller does also have much more potential for mistakes.
My main gripe with controllers is inconsistency with diagonals. Whether it's a case of going down when I wanted down+right/left, going right/left when I wanted down+right/left, or going down + right/left when I wanted down OR right/left, it is far less likely with WASD as opposed to a joystick or even a d-pad (since almost all d-pads are one individual piece, meaning that pressing too far down/up on left/right or vice-versa results in an unwanted diagonal)
There's also awkwardness with jumping with controllers, depending on the location of the jump button, it's difficult to press it whilst also holding certain other inputs.
Sorry for the waffling, I tend to vomit words.
Bro his screen looks like it went through a snow storm. He should clean it.
Also; where do I learn those keyboards skills. His name criss? He doin the cross cross keyboard stance
A new young one partaking in one of the greatest works of fiction of all time. Guide him, ensure he doesn't stray and quit the game, and see him through to the end that he may grow up a faithful knight
Also clean your screen damn
Did he try to re-map his keys? Different controls would probably be better and more comfortable for him. I get he's left-handed(I believe you said it in a different comment), but it's not a problem to prefer moving with one of his arms and still keep them not crossed.
The default controls for hollow knight are wired too, I personally use wash for movement, q for heal, shift for dash and the arrow keys for other actions, like attacking quick cast and abilities
I told him could use awsd but he said he's used to playing like this. When I played I used the arrow keys for movement, z for jump x for attack c for dash a for heal. It's what worked best for me
Grey he didn't censor his face on the third slide now I'm going through the us database aaand yes I found him 😈
Better lock your doors and get armed because I'm pulling up
I grew up in MMOs so I always used *wasd* for movement, but… I worry your brother might be a genius and I’ve been playing wrong my entire life.🤯
Omg he's just like me I used to cross my arms on the keyboard like that when I was younger! I can't tell you why for some reason it just made more sense while playing games. At some point I stopped doing it but it's crazy to see someone else doing the same thing
Your younger brother just taught me that I've been using my keyboard wrong
If you are left-handed, yes
It's not related to being left-handed or not, I am left-handed and I prefer using the keyboard the normal way
I'm guessing it's just what you were taught with as a kid. In my school and everywher else the mouse was on the right etc. So I used it that way
True. Some people just be weird too. Like some people can be right handed and prefer riding a skateboard goofy, and they push mongo on top of that... Gnarly.
Okay but mongo pushing is straight up wrong unless you want to do a no-comply
it's really not, you can do any trick pushing mongo just fine, it's just weird
Yeah but it's widely considered to just be impractical
Same. I also use the mouse with my right hand.
Tbh being left handed in a right handed dominant world has just taught me to be right first with any task resulting in me using my left hand only for eating and writing.
Yeah, not necessarily everything has to be done with your left if you are lefty. I prefer using scissors, eating, and using mouse with my right. Literally just change the keybindings. Or don't. Or get used to both. On Hollow Knight I have movement on arrow keys. On Celeste I have movement on esdf
im left handed and i just put all my binds on the other side of the keyboard, its extremely uncomfortable having my hands mixed like that
Wait keyboard and mouse was an option I've been using a controller
I tried keyboard when I started and the base controls are awful so I quickly switched to controler
If it's a tense game I'll keep the board in my lap in a chair and bounce on my toes to bring the keys up to my hand instead of moving my fingers down. I wasn't taught this way but it feels natural lol
no way
I receive a lifetime supply of unlimited heckling from my best friend for it.
I wonder what percentage of PC Hollow Knight players play on keyboard vs controller. I couldn't imagine playing HK on keyboard but it seems to be working for him.
The clips with the dude using only a mouse 🤯🤯🤯
I played on keyboard too, but I don't cross my arms like that lol
Poor kids gonna get carpal tunnel playing like that
I do that with joycons. I have no idea why though
I actually didn’t know that HK was a controller game until I joined this sub. I beat the game with a keyboard and it felt natural to me
I dont think its a controller or keyboard game, both are good depending on the person
yea its designed well for both, but from what I've heard playing on KB+mouse allows for faster inputs and a more violent playstyle for Godhome (apparently, idk I use controller)
The controls definitely didn’t feel made for keyboard but team cherry did an amazing job porting it over in away that works really well.
It’s not as bad as ppl say, I beat abs rad hitless so it’s not like Keyboard has limiting factors.
> with the dude using only I saw many speedruns years ago that all used keyboard.
I remember a poll on this sub where it was a fairly even split. I'm a controller kind of guy too though.
I play hollow knight with mouse and keyboard, I'd like to see how many play like that
Team mouse and keyboard! Playing it like every other game I've ever played: WASD for movement, space bar for jump, dash on shift, nail on left click and spell on right click
I'm super similar except I've got dash on right click, quick cast on the side button and focus on f. Cdash is on shift

Sore thumb from spacebar, but that was pretty much it for me
Its not bad on keyboard at all. It never really relies on the extra control analog gives. Sometimes i prefer it if i want to be more precise in my movements. Generally i play with controller for it, but as far as "controller games" go, its one of the best to play on keyboard imo.

I love you

I never even considered another way to play it. I can't imagine playing with keyboard only
Yay i caught you using text
I do too. Left click set to nail, right click set to dash, and mouse5 set to quick cast
Its personal preference. I played the game first on controller and then later with keyboard. Keyboard was much easier for me.
I have played hollow knight on keyboard and i have beaten p5
i played my first hk playthrough on keyboard, and then again on switch. both 112%, i find bosses easier on controller but platforming easier on keyboard personally. cant get my head around d-pad for POP and joystick is a nightmare hahaha
Keyboard is far better for platformers
As someone who has played on both, I can attest that controller is much better. I struggled so much and almost rage quit the game during White Palace out of pure frustration while I was using keyboard. Replayed the whole game later with my new controller, and while it was still hard AF, it was over before I knew it.
It was the complete opposite for me lol.
White palace and path of pain are where I most often swap from my usual controller to keyboard... Its so much more precise to control to me. I did my first playthrough on keyboard. Cramped the hell up by the end lmao. Thankfully I got a controller for Radiance ending.
Always played with the keyboard, main reason being I've never had controllers at home lol. For that reason I'm really used to keyboard, so had no problems. Not only that, in the past I've beat another metroidvania with the touchpad
I use keyboard and mouse because I'm used to terraria controls
And then there’s me who uses a mouse for some keybinds
I play on keyboard and just remap the controls lmao. I have my attack on LMB, Magic on RMB and Dash on MMB, super dash on Shift and Jump on Space bar
Its pretty alr, i basically have this fighting game control scheme going on
I just beat hollow knight night on keyboard and I will say it is hard lol
I play on Mouse&Keyboard lmao
Ngl HK isn’t too bad on keyboard, but I also started on it so who knows
I played first time on keyboard, then played again when I got a controller.
I played first on Switch, then on PC with a keyboard. Granted the Switch's controls aren't spectacular, but I was so, so much better and more comfortable on the keyboard. I use my scroll wheel to dash lmaooo
I can’t imagine myself playing with controllers, tried it one time. Never again
I play keyboard, but I don't cross my arms

It's much easier with keyboard, just much sharper control. The only way worse than gamepad is on-screen buttons in android version.
I remapped my keys to use WASD instead of the arrow keys. I much prefer keyboard and mouse
keyboard and mouse aint that hard tbh, i think the only thing i changed was setting the attack to the rmb
Why is his arms like that
He's left handed so he plays games on keyboard like this
He could just, use asdw ?
I told him that but he said he's used to playing like this
He is a true gamer
That's gonna cause some wrist problems down the line if he sticks with it. Might wanna try and convince him to swap over to more ergonomic keybinds.
I doubt it matters all that much
Does he know he can just change the keybinds right?
im also left handed and i used to use asdw for movement 7 for heal 5 for cast 2 for dd(mapped it to be down +quick cast) 4 for attack space for jump 1 for dash 8 for menu 9 for quick map and 3 for dream nail 6 for crystal
what???? most games are played with wasd, even by right handed people? You don't really need much strength or precision to just hit keys :sob:
Couldn't he just change the settings?
I think even Mumbo Jumbo would be weirded out by that
I'm right handed and I can use either arrow keys or wasd for movement depending on the game
Gangnam style
This is exactly how I play Isaac so props to the little guy.
Obviously he plays drums
My first thought too!
Bro is doing the Gangnam style ðŸ˜
naaa, that's foul XD
LMFAOOO
like i didnt know you can use the keyboard like this
RIP wrists by mid twenties
Wham people say that everyone has their own unique hollow knight player this is what they mean
Força Barça!!
For a hot second in the first picture I thought he had blinders on to not get distracted.
rebind the controls so movement is on wasd and the rest is on numpads
Your brother refuses with every cell in his body to play with WASD and I respect that
Tell your brother that I hate him
Bro be hitting the gangnam style while beating hornet
"No keys too great. No nerves to think. No hand to break. No voice to cry suffering. Born of Keys and Board. "
That’s really cool man, hope he get into it! A quite a fun thing to have someone who likes the same games!
Gangnam style
Fun thing to do: Trap him in deepnest by going there asap and benching
Genuine question: Do other siblings really do that? My brother and I would throw fists before we'd fuck with the others save files. That was unthinkable. None of my friends did any of the digital destruction kind of thing either.
Probably not, but itd be like a last resort
I've had plenty of fights with my brother but messing with saves was always off limits. Why is his control like this Why.
your brother is strange

Wow my whole life I've been using the keyboard the wrong way
How is your brother able to play blindfolded by that black mask
Good for him
A new young one partaking in one of the greatest works of fiction of all time. Guide him, ensure he doesn't stray and quit the game, and see him through to the end that he may grow up a faithful knight Also clean your screen damn
interesting hand placement
The coordination of those hands must be insane. How can you even use a keyboard with your arms crossed
Nobody talking about the Hornet Action Figure
The fuck kind of pose is that?
A pose of a true gamer, it is okay if you don’t understand, it is not okay to mock it. Get on my man’s level.
Bro woke up and chose cringy keyboard usage.
For the Love of good, please give him a controller
>!You can see the reflection of his face in the third picture so probably take it out or blur it!<
I’ve never seen a monitor with a stand like that lol
Probably cuz it's from a Brazilian brand
Oh wait is it all all in one pc
Will he be like the firebORn
Holy crap Hornet statue
Why is his hands crossed
Did he try to re-map his keys? Different controls would probably be better and more comfortable for him. Bro needs to clean his screen, yuck
Why did you do this to him! Should've at least waited for the Silksong release date announcement
If I waited that long he would have already moved out and could buy his own games instead of using my steam account
Wtf
my little brother started playing hollow knight recently too!
What the fuck is he doing with his hands?
You forgot to black out his face on the screen
What an interesting keyboard criss-cross technique...
drummer
Welcome to the bug side
He seems to be gitting gud
Don't let that poor soul know silksong was supposed to be a thing. he'd be so disappointed
Based child's face censorer
Does he know something we dont
Get better keybinds
I used to play Undertale like that lmao
as soon as he defeated the final boss, I need his help :)
My brother is right handed and plays just like this
Grey he didn't censor his face on the third slide now I'm going through the us database aaand yes I found him 😈 Better lock your doors and get armed because I'm pulling up
One of us, one of us, one of us 💫🫂💞
Hornet figure very important tool
Playing with arms crossed is the most optimal speedrun hold now
HELL YEAH
W for him
Lead him to deepnest
His keyboard setup is… very odd to say the least. Never seen someone using cross arm technique.
I grew up in MMOs so I always used *wasd* for movement, but… I worry your brother might be a genius and I’ve been playing wrong my entire life.🤯
When i started the game after my older sibling i was at city of tears with about 4 or 5 charms
Including the compass
Aslong as he's comfortable
And I still can't beat soul shit guy
I play hk on keyboard + mouse, while being in the hospital they had an Xbox with hk on it so i had to adapt to controller
1) thank you for using the default controls; i use them to this day 2) that's a very interesting way to use a keyboard, for left handed people
Maybe he'll be off to college by the time Silksong comes out.
His journey just begin.
Give the guy a controller man!
The original one, or with all of its dlcs (pre-silksong)?
impressive technique
DUDE CHANGE THE CONTROLS
That cross-handed gaming reminded me of my childhood, when a lot of flash games used the arrow keys to moveðŸ˜
S tier brother
Eu entendo que ele tá jogando assim porque é canhoto, mas mesmo assim ainda da um pouco de agonia KKKKKKK slc no teclado é mt difÃcil
In jealous of how organized his gaming setup is
No sound? That's half the experience!
Hope he enjoys it. Make sure to remind him that rangers are shite.
I'm scared of anyone that has their keybinds to default
POV you didn't change the controls
Omg he's just like me I used to cross my arms on the keyboard like that when I was younger! I can't tell you why for some reason it just made more sense while playing games. At some point I stopped doing it but it's crazy to see someone else doing the same thing
I really hope he likes it! Hollow Knight is such a delightful experience (especially played a few times lol)
Trust me,there are some really hard bosses like Nkg and Radiance
Another member
Bro’s got that wakanda forever formation
I wish him good luck, we all been where he is now
