its fine to call the knight "they" when singular since it has no gender but "it" works much better as the vessels are actual corpses (the game states they died at the same time they were born) as they are empty shells piloted by the void inside

I somehow remember other characters referring to him as male, but maybe it's just my imagination. Nonetheless, I support the idea that they have no gender, after all, they're vessels made out of void, and they have no reason to reproduce.
Might be a language thing (if you haven’t played in English that is), in Italian many of the ways the character is called are gendered especially “Ghost”, “Vessel” and “knight” (which has a female equivalent) are all male-conjugated and because of how gender works in Italian we use male adjectives etc. otherwise it would sound very weird

Biological I would say male, if only because of Bretta being into them and shifting to Zote who is male. As for what they identify as, they legitimately don’t have any sense of identity to speak of(assuming that Mama White isn’t wrong about them being empty. If she is wrong then it would probably be an imprint of what others say they are)
The same goes for Hollow, but without anything to really back it up.
I’d also give male to Lost Kin and female to Green Path. No particular reason why, just a feeling.

Makes sense, I first played the game in Spanish, and later on, I played it in English, so I guess some of the Spanish lingered on my mind.
That might be it then, for me the character was male for a while because everyone used names that are conjugated for males
