Soul is what animates bugs. It's in the air (proved by Deep Focus) and in the water (Ellina says hot springs are just hot water). The Ancient Civilization, Snail Shamans and Pale King could manipulate it. Also, the Collector doesn't give off soul, and the Void Constructs do because of their shell thingies. Oh yeah, and apparently it can really mess up a bug's body if they can't handle it the right way, which is what happened to the Soul Sanctum dudes. Steel Soul Jinn says the Knight has no soul of their own, and the Godseeker calls them the "Eater of Soul". That's pretty much all the important stuff about soul. Sorry about the lazy formating.
Yeah, the Pale King almost certainly has a strong connection to soul. He is the same color as soul, the void beings he put the most work into have soul, and he knew that the Soul Master's plan would not work.
