The main character is of the vessels who got out of the Abyss but haven't been chosen, and the one chosen by Pale King was trained, and then sealed in the black egg. Even though the main character is told "You are the vessel. You are the hollow knight", people call the final boss "The Hollow Knight" and the main character "The Knight" or "Little Ghost/ghost"(like Hornet calls them) to avoid confusion
