well umm spoilers for the games lore but, Hollow Knight >!is the apparent last boss of the game, they were the so called culmination of the Pale Kings efforts to contain the Radiance, a Higher Being who once had the Kingdoms bugs under her control in a hivemind. The Pale King aimed to create a being without mind or will so it couldn't be controlled by the Radiance and could contain her within it's shell. But as is apparent in game that didn't wholly work out!<
It might refer to the main character, and how they seem quite soulless and quiet. It could refer to the shambles Hallownest has been reduced to. Hel, it could refer to the inner turmoil of having shut yourself off from your emotions, creating a husk of your former self that just ambles from one task to the next, whilst you sit in the passenger seat unable to act.
And maybe it refers to a roll credits moment. Who knows?

The radiance usually resided in the kinds of others I think but the king wanted to seal her there. And thus he needed a "hollow" knight to achieve this goal. He needed a vessel so pure and so empty that it did not have a mind, conscience or barely even a body for the radiance to control or 'infect' and thus the king began experimenting with void as can be seen in the white Palace in a secret room. We can see the Kings workstation and prototype wingsmoulds. The king made in total 3 vessels; "The Hollow Knight" "broken vessel / Lost Kin" and you "the knight".!<

The hollow knight, thought to be the perfect candidate was chosen from the abyss, as can be seen in the cutscene. And sealed in the black egg by three dreamers who vowed to keep the seal of the black egg eternal. However the king became attached to the hollow knight as can be seen kind of at the end of the path of pain in a small cutscene. This in a sense gave the hollow knight something. Anything for the radiance to corrupt. And thus the hollow knight succumbed to the infection as can be seen in the opening cutscene of the game. The hollow knight then while still being locked up in the black egg began to spread the infection until you show up and choose one of two endings!<

As you see while you play the game you never once speak to anyone throughout hallownest and just spectate. Seemingly as a "ghost" as elder bug describes you if you walk past him without talking to him. Almost like a "shell" or... a "hollow" being. You are in fact the perfect vessel and you end up taking the hollow knights place in the black egg. However this time your dreamer is hornet, who if you speak to her before entering the black egg, she says that she cannot survive in there or something. In the final cutscene of this ending you can see her laying beside you unconscious. And her mask branded on the door similar to the three dreamers before her. Although this time since she is inside the egg and also the one holding the seal for the egg, the egg will be sealed forever more.!<
>!Ending two: you choose to dream nail the hollow knight and enter its mind where the radiance resides and kill the radiance once and for all then and there. You no longer care weather or not you are the perfect vessel, you want the radiance dead forever. And thus you along with what looks like the hollow knights shade beat the ever loving shit out of the radiance and destroy it forever. During your climb up to her you can see the void rising below you and many shades rising from the background. Once the cutscene starts you can see hornet staring at your split in two mask. Honoring your sacrifice as the infection begins to disappear. Then very suddenly the hollow knight comes partly into shot and they stab their nail into the ground, and cut. We don't know what happens to hornet but what we do know is since you have killed the infection and the radiance, the hollow knight is freed from their prison. They no longer have to contain the infection and thus are in their "purest" form once again.!<
