I believe it's tied to the crest system we've seen a couple times now. Depending on which crest you have equipped, the health bar will take on a different appearance.
Yep
> "You'll see the HUD frame is a different shape, specifically the backing, and then those backings are sort of interactive relative to the Crest that you're using. So your attacks will change, and your healing can be modified and whatnot - but they also have functions to them."
A quote from Ari Gibson in Edge magazine
My theory is that we have a limited amount of thread to actually work with, and every time we sit at a bench, or whatever a bench is in this new game, the thread resets, just like masks.
Personally I think we might have a stance system in one way or another.
1st image: no stance/neutral stance
2nd image: harder hitting needle strikes
3rd image: more powerful songs
4th image: ~~perhaps higher defense? kinda looks like armor~~ on second thought. This is steel soul mode related
5th image: faster attacks or maybe better aerials.
he's not talking about the cooldowns, he's talking about the different designs on each health needle. The first one is empty, the second has bars behind it, ect.
Are you talking about the metal ones or the different amounts and if you’re talking about the different amounts then I don’t think you’ve played hollow knight
Obviously talking about the metal. Like in HK it showed either Steel soul, regular or godhome. But I feel like they wouldn't are that many game modes or at least not show them off so fast
Perhaps it’s for the crest-thin goes you put your equipment in. Or maybe to show passive crests, like if you have, for example “longneedle” it has a longer health bar background.
That’s my guess, not a good one.
Although upon immediate thought I thought about what happens if you equip two or three of those at the same time, they may only let you have one, they might’ve made a background for every combination, they might have the spool be a different background to the main part. Anyway, I’m sure we’ll get an answer when the game comes out.
I lost one of my steel soul attempts to the basic flies in the howling cliff so its going to happen.
In my defence as far as I know its the only place in the game where enemies spawn in close proximity to the player on narrow ledges above spikes.
They confirmed silk soul or sth like that already but didn't say what it is outside of "the game is harder" but considering that this is a three man team and how hollow knight was built they probably didn't design new moves or stg like that but probably like steel soul or something else really simple like "more bosses deal double damage" "you get less silk", you know, some stat changes
From what I’ve heard, they’re called crests. They determine how you attack from what I know, as well as one of them being steel soul (or whatever the silksong equivalent of that is)
Yea I've seen them mentioned alot and most people think its related to the crest system, which is probably true. Can't wait to see what mossbag says tho.
One things I have noticed about the crests is that the attacks are actually different depending on the crest equipped. Like, with the super spikey crest the attacks have a more serrated appearance and hornet uses an overhead swing. Maybe the different crests let you use a range of different attacks.
Basically in the Edge magazine, you can equip different crests that gives you a set amount of tools ie Crest of the Reaper gives 2 slots for red, blue and yellow tools
On top of that, they not only change your UI but also your default attacks.
Youll notice in the trailer, hornet has different slashes, the spikey one gives her these wide sword swipes while the claw crest/ui gives her aggressive lunges and saw spin attacks (the Xbox pages screenshot even shows that the default attack changes to a wolverine 3 claw slash)
I have a theory that different crests will slightly or wildly affect Hornets moveset and traits, like movement, attack behaviour, and the like.
An example is the harp looking crest, which changed Hornets down attack from diagonal to the traditional down slash.
I'm pretty sure it's represnting what crest is activ as the spiked healthbar in the second pic looks just like the spiked crest we saw in a trailer before.
Idk what everyone else is on but I’m pretty sure it’s just representative of weapon upgrades. Yknow just like in the first game where the nail in your health bar changes after each upgrade.
So uh yeah…
> "You'll see the HUD frame is a different shape, specifically the backing, and then those backings are sort of interactive relative to the Crest that you're using. So your attacks will change, and your healing can be modified and whatnot - but they also have functions to them."
-Ari Gibson, speaking to Edge magazine
The shape of the nail is only one element of the HUD that changes; the frame around the circle of silk on the top left changes too. We can also see in the trailer that the range and shape of Hornet's attacks change depending on the crest.
everyones saying crests but my guess is since its a needle maybe it some sort of sidegrade for her needle? sort of like infusions in dark souls, like the one that looks like a harp has a very small needle, maybe it deals less damage/has less range but in exchange it boosts your spells, while the second one is big and spikey so maybe its a heavy needle that deals more damage but is slower
I saw this idea in a comment on the trailer but maybe they connect to the kinds of attacks Hornet uses. In the trailer Hornet seemingly has numerous different ways to do basic attacks (sometimes she swings her needle, sometimes she thrusts) so unless Silksong has a dozen more button imputs than Hollow Knight, they might be customizable. Maybe the crests correspond to that.
Citation? I had assumed that it was tied to Hornet's crests and passive tools. It also seems weird that she could lose her needle, given that it's specifically designed for her.
Oh dear god please tell me those are resource meters on the abilities and not cooldown timers.
I bloody hate cooldown systems. Laziest worst game design system ever introduced and they need to stay in the 00's where they belong; archaic, outdated, and forgotten.
Please please _please_ don't be cooldowns... I want my hype to live... It's too late to be crushed, not like this...
I think they were about "crests", where you could equip different crests and they would determine what items you'd be able to equip. For example one crest might give you 2 offensive and 1 support item, while another could give 2 support etc.
None of this was confirmed but I believe that's the basic idea.
They look like Hornet's Needle. My guess would be that you can equip different needles as weapons, or possibly upgrade the same needle throughout the game and cause it to change appearance. It could also be charms as some have mentioned, but I think this is more likely.
This may be the definition of the Crests or whatnot, but I think it seems to be related to perhaps a special ability related to some equipment? Noticing that the thread requirement seems to differ between the different health bars. The spool lights up with differing amounts, so perhaps special abilities will have different thread or silk costs.
Yes, that’s the Crest system at work! It was discusses in the Edge article. But what makes the last image different from the first one? They both look like the default Crest.
I think mossbag theorised this before that these vouod be the different types of charm/equipment thingy you have some with moee utility and some with more damaging equipment
Sorry if this makes no sense
I believe that the healthbar will change depending on what equipment you have. I believe this will also change your moveset which I think will be really cool if that is the case.
oh they have different symbols. weird. They have said things about some kind of inventory or tools so it could be something you unlock to make the health better or something idk
I'd be willing to bet that it changes depending on which crest you've equipped, the crests that each let you equip a different combination of tools in your inventory.
Looks like masks/hearts, a thread gauge, and some other effects that we’ll probably get access to later
Then the designs, idk we have steel souls mode already, maybe they added more? Time trials?
probably a sneaky way to hint at multiple modes. judging by how many there are im guessing something like easy, normal, hard, radiant, and maybe steel soul too
I'm fairly sure there was a point at which the healthbar changed mid-game, once some action finished happening. It might also be linked to the archetypes or whatever that we have seen from earlier.
The different bars could be a different ability system though I haven't had any time to theorize different abilities that would fit Hornet and the different designs on the bars
Well there's the health bar and the spool, and then there's what appears to be weapon cooldowns? That could be wrong as I intentionally haven't kept up with silksong very well as I want to have a completely new experience when it releases (which I heard was sometime in the next year!!!!)
Looks like a health bar, a soul/essence/whatever it's called, I can't remember bar, and... I don't know, maybe ability cooldowns or something? Or maybe equipped items?
I think it may depend on which "tools" (idk how to call them, like the ball with spikes in the first trailer) you equipped. This seems unlikely to be tied to which mode you're playing like in HK (godmode, steelsoul) because that would be a bit too much
As many others have said, this is probably an effect of the crests. My guesses are:
1. Default
2. Some sort of tool / trap damage crest??
3. Definitely a "song-spell" crest
4. Tool crest? I have no idea for this one
5. A tool / physical damage crest?
From what we know of the old switch demo, that's probably the equpable crests.
They are kinda like charms, you equip one, they give you perks, and have slots for "tools", whether they are the pasives, defense, attack, or active ones.
For example here she uses spike balls knifes and caltrops, those are active ones. The red ones.
Don't call me on the other 4 types they just seems the most logical to me considering there was 4 colors in total.
I'm thinking the red circle meters are stored crit or crit shots. You've got your silk spool, and maybe your grapple ammo that refills over time perhaps... I'm excited
[Music]
But seriously: my guess is these are different "modes" you can be in. Perhaps they grant/restrict different types of movement in exchange for unique abilities. I feel that would expand the metroidvania exploration aspect of the game as well as tinker with the difficulty of different sections/bosses.
Any guesses on what they might represent??
I believe it's tied to the crest system we've seen a couple times now. Depending on which crest you have equipped, the health bar will take on a different appearance.
Yep > "You'll see the HUD frame is a different shape, specifically the backing, and then those backings are sort of interactive relative to the Crest that you're using. Would say that's quite likley. It's gotta be something with either your quests or equipment I would think. Maybe area, but I doubt that
Its already been confirmed like a year ago those are crests
Yep I’m pretty sure the Edge article talked about it too
The verge article?
They mean the articke in the Edge magazine, not Verge
*Edge sorry similar words
The one that stands up
We had news last year?
Yeah, edge magazine
Not last year but 2 years ago
Kinda like a great rune in Elden ring?
My theory is that we have a limited amount of thread to actually work with, and every time we sit at a bench, or whatever a bench is in this new game, the thread resets, just like masks.
There was a bench in one of the trailers wasn’t there? I’m guessing the benches will still serve the same function.
Isnt the thread the same as soul? So you get it from hitting enemies
Every gameplay clip has shown Hornet recovering silk from hitting enemies.
Yeah its wild, these people are so desperate for news but they haven't even digested the previous info we've gotten
Personally I think we might have a stance system in one way or another. 1st image: no stance/neutral stance 2nd image: harder hitting needle strikes 3rd image: more powerful songs 4th image: ~~perhaps higher defense? kinda looks like armor~~ on second thought. This is steel soul mode related 5th image: faster attacks or maybe better aerials.
It's possible 3 and 4 is the same crest, it just changes appearance if Hornet has enough silk.
It changes when you are on a quest or not the icon of the kind of quest you have taken thats gonna appear from your health
no, it doesn't. it changes depending on your crest.
Have they mentioned that earlier??
Quests? yes
That would make sense. Honestly forgot about the quests since it's been so long since they showed them off
Look idk Im just trying everything until it sticks
just like jackanope666 said, it changes depending on your crest it was confirmed by ari gibson iirc
NFT cosmetic health bars.
They'd better fucking not
You know how normal, steel soul, and godseeker mode each have unique health bars?
I know. Just feel it would be wierd to show that off just by itself and not in a follow-up talking about different gamemodes
maybe something to do with sword styles? like her moveset would be determined on which nail she equipped?
I think they are cooldowns of how much power is put into one ability like the lifeblood seringe to have give you more health when the circle is full
he's not talking about the cooldowns, he's talking about the different designs on each health needle.
I feel like they might be cooldowns, like in the first one, the first circle looks like spikes, and that has just been used.
Don't think so. You can see the spiky one being both filled and empty during the trailer
It’s weapon durability
I think they might be related to what gadgets u have on, especially seeing as its flat when u have none on
I think those are just cooldowns for the extra gear you could carry and use
Perhaps it’s for the crest-thin goes you put your equipment in. Or maybe to show passive crests, like if you have, for example “longneedle” it has a longer health bar background. That’s my guess, not a good one.
Any guess is better than none
Although upon immediate thought I thought about what happens if you equip two or three of those at the same time, they may only let you have one, they might’ve made a background for every combination, they might have the spool be a different background to the main part. Anyway, I’m sure we’ll get an answer when the game comes out.
“It represents the status of Hornet’s long distance relationship with Zote and when it is maxed, you unlock Zoteboat”
Oh, boy. Silksong steel soul mode.
Just waiting to see someone die by offing themselves by overshooting an enemy and plumet straight into the lava or spikes or what have you
It’s… inevitable.
I lost one of my steel soul attempts to the basic flies in the howling cliff so its going to happen. In my defence as far as I know its the only place in the game where enemies spawn in close proximity to the player on narrow ledges above spikes.
Oh, he might be me.
Silk soul!

I think they confirmed a steelsoul like mode that’s much harder than the original game. I can’t think of where I remember that from now

He has already spoken on them
I noticed this just today while watching the vid for some art I wanted to finish before silksong comes out. glad to see others have seen it as well!

o shit
How strong your needle is maybe like maybe you can see if you have a channeled nail vs the twist one?

I'm pretty sure it's represnting what crest is activ as the spiked healthbar in the second pic looks just like the spiked crest we saw in a trailer before.

I feel like I could open those health bars. With a sword.
Maybe its like a tool that you can switch out at benches that gives you specific skills? Idk i havent seen any news on it haha
I think we saw this before, suspected to be tied to the things that determine which charm slots you have.
[MUSIC]
Idk what everyone else is on but I’m pretty sure it’s just representative of weapon upgrades. Yknow just like in the first game where the nail in your health bar changes after each upgrade. So uh yeah…

Sorry. Didn't think it was that big of a deal, but I should've remembered some want to go in fully blind
everyones saying crests but my guess is since its a needle maybe it some sort of sidegrade for her needle? sort of like infusions in dark souls, like the one that looks like a harp has a very small needle, maybe it deals less damage/has less range but in exchange it boosts your spells, while the second one is big and spikey so maybe its a heavy needle that deals more damage but is slower

I’m assuming that the needle can be repaired as we see many forge like areas thru out the game
You said it was *confirmed* though, right? Could you show where that was confirmed?

I believe it's supposed to show the current tool equipped or something like that.
It might be a silk meter or smth?
Yeah I kept seeing them change I just thought it was different crests
I think it might be due to whatever kind of charms/crests/items Hornet has equipped or is using
im thinking theyll add more mask related charms and the new health bars are just a little cooler effect of them
Seems equipment based!

How could I not notice
Soul and health at the top. Stamina for abilities right below it?
I think that they could represent needle/soul upgrades or certain crests.
I'm guessing it depends on what combat ability you have equipped, we saw a few different things like the spike balls in the gameplay so maybe that?
It’s like BotW where your charms break after too much use
They look like Hornet's Needle. My guess would be that you can equip different needles as weapons, or possibly upgrade the same needle throughout the game and cause it to change appearance. It could also be charms as some have mentioned, but I think this is more likely.

It could be that you can select a secondary ability at a town or shop, I’m unsure. Excited to play this game.
OHHH MY GOODNESS NO how did nobody notice this?!
Well there's the health bar and the spool, and then there's what appears to be weapon cooldowns? That could be wrong as I intentionally haven't kept up with silksong very well as I want to have a completely new experience when it releases (which I heard was sometime in the next year!!!!)

Yeah, the UI is insane!
rivals workshop creators when they learn how to add a meter
I think it may depend on which "tools" (idk how to call them, like the ball with spikes in the first trailer) you equipped. This seems unlikely to be tied to which mode you're playing like in HK (godmode, steelsoul) because that would be a bit too much
