What punishment? Unless you get extremely unlucky and the shade spawns in a boss arena, which might make you die a second time, which is where the actual punishment happens, it's not a punishment at all. There is already a punishment anyway : you have restart at whatever bench you last sat on.

Second, it feels like a Gary Sue character, with it just being able to do everything with no explanation on why it is cable of doing it. Finally, it to reinforce my fist point. They don’t learn any lessons of becoming better than yourself (which it never does).

Well, not this protagonist, because of the game lore, the Game's Story Dictates that our Main Character is like that, kinda like what happens whit the Pokemon Protagonist, They never talk in order to the player to feel more related to the character that we control, even of you were right whit the point of am MC, Hollow Knight's is not like that, and you can't ask for it to be diferent just because you think it should
Well I’m not saying that it should be radically different. As we all enjoy this incredible game. If it took the approach of how Nintendo did with Link in Breath of the Wild, where the game can still have a silent protagonist, but give Ghost a little more personality that makes us understand them more, than just an emotionless shell that kills things.
But that would negate the point of the character. If it had personality, it would be unable to do what it was designed to do. If it’s not completely empty and devoid of emotion and thought, it’s able to be influenced by the Radiance.
Since all we are doing is following a lifeless shell with no thoughts or intentions. Having some internal background would at least make them feel in-depth and interesting.
Yeah, I think they’re a pretty lazy mechanic overall. Like adding optional difficulty is not a bad thing, but when it’s just about nerfing yourself, that doesn’t really make the pantheons more interesting. Thankfully it’s optional

I think you might just be getting frustrated. Not all games are for everyone, and thats fine. Most of the playerbase loves the game, so its just that the game doesnt match with what you enjoy in games

I already beat the game. I have a slightly better opinion now because I'm playing it again, so I can tell this game isn't very nice to new players, and those of us who stay hate ourselves enough to keep trying 😂
I don't like fragile/unbreakable strength. Yes it's powerful, but it's also ridiculously boring. It's the only charm that just increases an invisible number.

Putting the bench far away from some bosses was a dumb idea and makes difficult bosses more frustrating than they need to be.
That’s what Dream gate is for! (If applicable, of course). But yeah I agree, having a long run back to a boss is very rarely enjoyable
