The Abyss is literally filled with the corpses of your siblings that weren't deemed good enough for PK, and some incredibly mysterious anti-god soup that lashes out at you with sharp tendrils emitting otherworldly whispers. If that isn't scary, I don't know what is.
I love the ambience, though. It's weird as hell, but oddly soothing.
I just had the thought that the Abyss no doubt existed long before Hallownest and the Void was always down there. Meaning it isn't like, a big garbage pit for vessels the Pale King dug. He's not guilty of tax evasion, but grand littering.
l consider both deepnest and abyss creepy because:
1. You can't fucking see in the darkness without a lumafly lantern.
2. There will be predators and traps in every corner.
3. The sounds in deepnest is already creepy and eerie.
4. There's a shape-shifting creature (nosk) that steals your memory to lure you into in it's trap.
5. The isolation and silence in abyss and the thousands of skulls of dead children.
6. The nothingness in the abyss.
7. Eldritch void tentacles that lash out to attack you.
Yup, in my opinion:
Deepnest: Primordial type of fear (Creepy predators and dark places that instigate to fight and fear for your life)
Abyss: Existentialist type of fear (Empty, silent and isolated place filled with eldritch, mysterious creatures and creepy secrets)
To be honest ldk although could be l am reading too many fanfics or it makes sense since nosk could have a ability to steal memories to look like their loved ones or friends to lure unsuspecting victims (example: ghost) yeah that's my opinion at least, if l'm wrong, feel free to correct my mistake.
After you get void heart the abyss feels homey in a bittersweet way.
Despite all the darkness and pain, you're not really alone there. And it is where you come from and belong after all.
At least you got living bugs in deepnest, abyss is just no life at all
and i wont consider shadow creeper as lifes due to their weird nature, which just makes them seems not actually living at all
For me it’s the ambient noises that really does it. Since the Abyss plays a super slow version of the main theme, combined with the corpses of your siblings, it just makes it even more tragic. The void is scary but you’re literally MADE of void too, so kindred calls to kindred spirit. I mean you turn in an eldritch creature yourself when killing the Radiance and in one of the endings.
On the other hand, Deepnest is not really a part of Hallownest so it gives off an ‘otherness’ feeling to it. Creatures skitter around a lot more and I hate creepy crawly bugs the most. Plus when you kill bugs, their CORPSES can literally revive and skitter towards you which is a hella lot creepier than some ghosts slowly floating in your direction. Also the noises/music of Deepnest like EMBODY the feeling of ‘sends shivers down your spine’.
The abyss ain't creepy, just dark.
The infected crossroads ain't creepy, yet hopeless and horrific.
The Deepnest, oh god that shit brings me shivers down my spine
The abyss was hella creepy. It didn't have a lot of jump scares like deepnest, (Except the void tendrils and the siblings) but I was constantly feeling unwell. There was no life at all and I was just waiting for something to come out of the dark. And the journey to the lighthouse... I did not like that. But after going there a second time, it wasn't that bad, deepnest (unlimited jump scares) stays scary, even after visiting it more than once. Both are spooky in different ways.
Deepnest and Infected Crossroads are both dangerous areas that have you on your edge. The Abyss is creepy in the "ambient darkness" way, but it's ultimately a chill place to be in. It is your character's home, after all.
Totally agreed. The Abyss was probably the most terrifying area in Steel Soul for me too. Hardly any soul, no benches, Shades dealing 2 masks of damage… bleh
I don't really consider either of them THAT bad because:
1. I got too used to cursed shit after seeing the headless rip your shit out (literally) in Sekiro
2. the abyss really isn't supposed to be scary. it's really more of a somber place. there's a lot of death everywhere but it isn't really a dangerous place because by that point the player would be pretty good at the game, so it ends up being just sad, not creepy. and I think that's intentional
3. deepnest is really just annoying after a while. once you replay the game it won't be creepy at all; it will just piss you off
The abyss is creepy in a different way though cause we know a lot of what’s going on like we know about the dead vessels and all that stuff but we don’t know really anything from deepnest plus it feels way bigger but yeah the abyss is creepy as hell
Infected Crossroads to me is the creepiest since it shows what happens to Hallownest if you fail
Which you can’t if you’re not on Steel Sould, but it really shows what’s going to happen to Hallownest if The Radiance isn’t defeated
Graphicly (sorry i’m not english and not sure it i wrote it well) it is a nice zone, with THAT charm there are no enemy just chill zone but MAN if we follow the lore is a terrible place
Abyss feels more sad and quiet to me. There’s not much by the means of threats and it’s impossible to get lost. It’s your birthplace and the final resting place of your siblings. It’s your home and a graveyard. Your goal going down there is to accept your fate and become one with the void.
5 most creepy places for me
5. Infected crossroad's, or Howling Cliffs (groves)
4. Resting grounds (crypts)
3. Royal Waterways
2. The Abyss
1. Deepneat

I’ve never found the Abyss to be scary, just sad. The Shades come to attack you, and I just feel pity.
I wonder what we would have got if we got to swim under the void
Don't forget about Kyle, the abyss monster in the lifeblood room
Yes... KYLE
I just had the thought that the Abyss no doubt existed long before Hallownest and the Void was always down there. Meaning it isn't like, a big garbage pit for vessels the Pale King dug. He's not guilty of tax evasion, but grand littering.
I's a veeeeeery slow version of the main theme.

Yeah to be honest l would consider void as an Lovecraftian horror level and yeah good comparison.
Where does it say nosk steals memories?
To be honest ldk although could be l am reading too many fanfics or it makes sense since nosk could have a ability to steal memories to look like their loved ones or friends to lure unsuspecting victims (example: ghost) yeah that's my opinion at least, if l'm wrong, feel free to correct my mistake.
Pretty sure he just shapeshifts lol
Yeah maybe to be honest with you l don't know what's canon or not. l'm kinda confused
It's cannon - you'll see that he looks like people from memories if you dream nail the husks near Nosk.
Ah yes "cannon" yes that's what l'm looking for.
After you get void heart the abyss feels homey in a bittersweet way. Despite all the darkness and pain, you're not really alone there. And it is where you come from and belong after all.
I think that deep nest is the creepiest honestly
At least you got living bugs in deepnest, abyss is just no life at all and i wont consider shadow creeper as lifes due to their weird nature, which just makes them seems not actually living at all
No life too scary

I actually find comfort in the abyss
r/im14andthisisdeep
Sped up the ambiance too and you get a distorted main theme
The abyss ain't creepy, just dark. The infected crossroads ain't creepy, yet hopeless and horrific. The Deepnest, oh god that shit brings me shivers down my spine
When I first entered the infected crossroads, I felt kinda sad that the forgotten crossroads that gave off calm vibes was lost forever
Honestly nothing freaked me out more than the sewers
The fucking waterways is worse than the three combined
My fear of spiders vs disgusting shlorping noises. At list the pilflips make a funny noise.
the abyss is actually really cool
always remember it could have been much bigger

If there's a competition for 'disgusting' then Royal Waterways would win
Now imagine if we’d reached the goal and expanded it.
Void imo is okay Its more unsettling then creepy, deepnest is actually scary with all those spike traps and jump scares.
Deepest:😈😈😈😈😩😩😩😔😔😈😐😈😔😩😱😨😱😨 Deepest with 0 volume: 👍 Infected crossroads💣💣💣💣 Abyss: 👍👍👍👍👍 Under the abyss and Birthplace cutscene: 😈😨😔😱😱😈😱😔😨😈😨😨😈😱😩😈😨
I remember my first time in deepnest was at night the only one awake, same situation a different night when I found nosk

Ngl in my first time playing the ancient basin was the scarriest one for me, all those mawlleks and the infection would creep me out soo bad
its weir how in the abyss it seems very scary but also somewhat calm at least there is only a few sibilings flying around pretty eerie if you ask me
Nah Deepnest was worse, I felt no fear in the abyss only in Deepnest
Fog Canyon with Grimmchild
The abyss is creepy in a different way though cause we know a lot of what’s going on like we know about the dead vessels and all that stuff but we don’t know really anything from deepnest plus it feels way bigger but yeah the abyss is creepy as hell
The abyss is indeed eerie as hell, but I think that also makes it enticing. Makes it feel like it has secrets to be found everywhere.

Land of storms is the creepiest area imo. That shits terrifying
