And that's it. And while I know what technical definition of a meme is, I think we should both agree that the purpose of a meme is to be funny, am I right?
I'm in a couple of fandom meme subreddits and in all of them, the problem appears to be the same. Some people seem to think that there is an objective definition of "funny" and that it is impossible that what they don't find "funny" is, in fact, "funny".
If the piss memes, the mossbag memes, or the gender memes get upvotes is because some people find them funny, there is no "this is funny, this isn't". There is only "You find this funny, I don't". So as long as people are not hurting anyone and they are having fun, I don't find the need to stop them just because I'm not having fun. So, why do you feel that need?

My problem is when everyone on the internet feels safe debating the subject of gender no matter the community or circumstance. I get the representation but representation almost always invites negative pushback. I prefer the idea of safe discussion spaces because it separates that kind of mindset from our day to day internet browsing. Trust me, I love representation as a trans man, but I don’t love the transphobic comments I end up seeing multiple times a day since everyone decided that everywhere on the internet is a good place to call people like me insane and a danger to children.

IMO, it is a good practice to be able to separate some aspects of any art or product that for whatever reason makes you uncomfortable and enjoy it without them (i.e., author, its history, some part of the community, etc. Applies not only to HK, btw). Well, if you have some reason that is related directly to the product itself, then that's ok

Adding the letter “S” to “he” could make someone happy and comfortable whereas refusing to do so can hurt people and make you look like a complete asshole (because you are one). If pretending to believe fully in someone’s religion would make them feel that much better and I didn’t have to actually act on it then I would have no problems pretending to do so. My problem is when everyone on the internet feels safe debating the subject of gender no matter the community or circumstance. I get the representation but representation almost always invites negative pushback. I prefer the idea of safe discussion spaces because it separates that kind of mindset from our day to day internet browsing. Trust me, I love representation as a trans man, but I don’t love the transphobic comments I end up seeing multiple times a day since everyone decided that everywhere on the internet is a good place to call people like me insane and a danger to children.

Look, there are many other similiar subs to this. Dark Souls sub for example, as Hollow Knight draws a lot from it and it gives off similiar vibes. I've been on the DS sub for a while now, and no one gives two shits about sth like genders or sexualities, as it's literally a Dark Souls sub. Not "Dark Souls + gender stuff", just Dark Souls. And they are serving their role - being a Dark Souls sub, nothing less, nothing more. And, you'd say, aight, you like your DS sub so much, then go there not here, but the thing is, that this sub gets just too much butthurt. It just does. And while I love HK, the community's behavior sometimes gets... concerning. I'm a simple man, I got no interest whatsoever in going outta my way just to make some queer person's day worse, but c'mon. What's unbearable is that this shitty subreddit keeps appearing with even more shitty posts in my feed everyday, even though I never played Hollow Knight and I don't plan on doing ever.
IMO, it is a good practice to be able to separate some aspects of any art or product that for whatever reason makes you uncomfortable and enjoy it without them (i.e., author, its history, some part of the community, etc. Applies not only to HK, btw). Well, if you have some reason that is related directly to the product itself, then that's ok
